I tried to transact my business with the Pinellas County Clerk on line but was a little confused by the choices offered so I went to the source and I'm glad I did. When I arrived at the clerk's office on the 2nd floor I took a number. My number was called 2 minutes later. Isabella was completely knowledgeable and cut through my confusion with a few well worded sentences, and even managed to save me a few dollars as well, which is always welcome. I left clutching an instruction sheet with all the items pertaining to my situation highlighted. Wow! I have mentioned in the past the legendary lines and wait times of government offices in my home town of Chicago, and how Pinellas County Florida government offices are the exact opposite of what I'm used to. Nice jeans are ok for jury duty. Even though it says to get there by 830 nothing starts till 9. Very efficient and quick to get in and the check in for jury duty is quick as well. Quicker if you fill out and sign all paperwork beforehand. read more

Got called up for jury duty. I have to say that I was really impressed by the Pinellas County Justice Center (probably wouldn't have been so much had I been there for something I had done wrong). Parking lots were large and clean. Entrance appealing. The building was ENORMOUS! Check in process was organized. When I got through security, an officer saw I had a jury summons so he kindly directed me to the room I needed to be in. Check in for jury duty was also organized. If you read your summons, it clearly states how to make the check-in process go smoothly. We were place in a large room and provided with coffee, tea and a water fountain. The room had numerous photos of old Pinellas County which were interesting. After everyone checked in, we were given an orientation which was informative. We were told that we MAY NOT BE selected. My number was called and officers escorted us to the 4th floor courtrooms where we waited outside on benches in the hallway. After a long wait, an officer came out and told us we could go home.... whatever went on inside the courtroom was settled without the need for a jury. Overall, it was a positive experience. Everyone was friendly and respectful. I had never participated in jury duty before so it was an educational experience for me. read more

Upon being asked to shoulder my civic responsibility, I served my jury duty at the CJC. There is plenty of free parking in and around the buildings. It is an enormous complex. When you first enter the building, you go through the same procedures that you would at any airport TSA checkpoint. Be sure that you let them know if you have a pacemaker, as I do. You will be hand searched, instead. The facility is spotlessly clean from the bathrooms to the courtrooms. The Jury Assembly hall is just to the right of the front entrance. The jury process was made quite easy by the friendly folks with the Pinellas Co. Clerk's office. The seats are actually comfortable but the hall filled to capacity quite quickly. There are places to get beverages and snacks while you wait to be selected for a panel. There are also a lot of restrooms available on every floor and in the Jury Assembly Hall. read more

I mean no one really wants to go here. I came because I was in a car accident as a passenger and I got a subpoena. Pros: I got to see traffic court in action, the facility is clean, and the process went as fast as it could, and I got paid $5 plus $0.06/mile to show up. Cons: I got to see traffic court in action, I was subpoenaed to go, and I had better things to do with my time (on my scheduled day off). This was my first time ever having to go to traffic court. If I had a choice I would have stayed home. But I tried to make the most of it. The judge has done this a lot of times and at the very beginning she explained the terms, explained that if you want to change your plea you could and that's what most of the people there did. There was a gentleman who showed out for his defense. He took up most of the time I was there because he knew more about laws than the judge and from my understanding it seemed she was trying to give him a break. The case I was there for they asked what I saw and I was looking at my phone at the time of the accident so I saw nothing. The judge asked the officer if he saw it he did not and she assumed the guy who was at fault wouldn't incriminate himself so she dismissed the case. The start time for all of us was 5:30 and I was out of there with my $7 and change within 45 minutes. The parking lot is large and it was the end of the day so parking and navigating the 4 story building was fast I didn't stand in any lines and was in the courtroom from the parking lot in 10 minutes, which included going through security and to the 3rd floor. I can imagine if I had a daytime court time it would have been a lot more activity. All in all I did have a pleasant-ish experience for something I had to do. What can I say. The justice center is a center of justice, several floors of it. The entranceway - rather than ominous - is aesthetically rather neutral if not even pleasant as you approach. Walking in is typical of an indoor pedestrian security checkpoint and it might bring to memory a time or two you stood ready to catch a flight with a couple of rows of TSA agents lined up on either side and a nice HAL-like semisphere gazing unblinkingly as you wonder 'is this all the metal I've got?' while rubbing a piece of pocket lint between your fingers. The clerks have always been most helpful and seemingly happy to help. The line moves a little faster than I've experienced in only a couple other courthouses, though the story inside the rooms can be a little different. Its easy to navigate. Getting in from this side, its a rather professional feeling experience. If you didn't know better, a little ethereal mall music could really set the atmosphere. Getting out, well. To be expected that is a different story. I won't try to depict that experience but to say this about the process: it is long but rather uneventful. However, if you are or were as I was homeless, and thought perhaps with the court date you had coming up you might be going to jail for a few days... I highly recommend you DO NOT bring your few possessions with you. Even if they are secured in a backpack and clean and don't smell and its mostly just clothes and some shaving equipment and shoes you need to get a job when you get out - leave it with a family member or friend or wrap it in trash bags and bury it in the woods. TWO THINGS if you're on the WRONG SIDE of the law: 1) The Justice Center has on several times destroyed or 'lost' my only belongings in such a situation where I was doing a few days to a few weeks. If you really need it to put your life together when you get out of jail, do not expect it to be around if you bring it to jail and then get out. At some point they give you an evidence 'list' printout without your items on it and there is no way for you to contest or obtain the things you need like dress shoes and clothes or shaving equipment or soap. I tried contacting evidence department and the normal pickup for inmates as well as the sheriff's office on ulmerton, most people ignored me until I left. Don't expect responsibility for your belongings from those who take them from you. I made that mistake. 2) Do you have food stamps - EBT for instance? Please be VERY aware that there have been taxi cabs waiting outside the jail exit attempting to solicit rides home in exchange for FOOD STAMPS. This seems like it would be highly illegal to me. Don't end up right back inside, with a new charge, and without what little help you manage to get that you need by risking possibly illegal use of food stamps (I did not notice taxi cabs on the SNAP website as an accepted purchase item). To my knowledge this potential crime has been reported several times but I would not be surprised if it still happens. Perhaps the police would like to investigate these unmarked taxi cabs that insist they can take SNAP/EBT as compensation from people just getting out of jail? read more
