This pleasant cafe does a nice little business with the locals in the 16th and the Radio France workers. We dined at Cafe a la Fontaine two times during our stay and both times we really enjoyed our meals. The menu is not that large and in French but the wait staff will translate if you have any questions. It is not too expensive either which is always a plus. The crispy-skinned Confit du Canard (Duck) was very good, The Pot au Feu, (A French Beef Stew) was also excellent. They have some chicken, pasta, steak, burger and salads also. It is simple inside with wood floors and cozy seats. The customers were friendly too. The waiters tolerated by terrible French and answered in English. Nice little spot if your in or around the 16th. I wish there was something like this in Phila/ South Jersey. It wasn't an 7 hour flight it would get 5 stars.

Three words to sum-up the entire review: rustic rustic rustic!…read more This is a nice little (both figurative and physically) quintessentially French neighborhood restaurant. The host is very gracious and attentive particularly given that the 20 some table seem to always be busy. I started the meal with their homemade pate which really brings it back to the roots (chunky mixed meats mixed in with bone gelatin). As I am used to its more modern cousin the mouses, it took a while to get used to it. However I must admit that it did grow on me (partially thanks to the black pepper and parsley). An interesting side to the dish was a very classic lemon-oil emulsion which was perfectly executed - after over 15 mins it did not run/separate! My main course was veal cutlets served with the restaurant's signature french fries (i.e. Steak frite - but with veal). The fries were as good as they look - not the best in the world but definitely worthy of praise. However 1/2 of the cutlets were slightly overcooked with the rest being perfect. A sign of the restaurants' rustic roots - the cutlets were served in their jus (with a small slice of butter) staying true to the fires / meat paring. They surprisingly had a large selection of desserts. I went with the homemade chocolate mouse which once again fulfilled the rustic ideal: The egg whites could be tasted and you can even feel the very small bits of dark chocolate on the tongue creating a luscious and lovely combination (clearly the moose was only made of one egg whites, sugar, and dark chocolate!) Given the execution of the first two courses I definitely can not give it higher than 4 stars and in fact 3 1/2 might be more warranted food wise; however the service quality and the execution of the desert absolutely makes this a four-star local gem.

I tried to visit the less touristy spots, but apparently this is hard to come by in Paris. Then I went to Spirit Cafe and had a very authentic French/Thai experience. My husband and I stumbled across this place on a rainy day wandering through Paris. We went at lunch time and seemed to be the only tourists in the entire place. No one spoke English, which I appreciated! We are in France, after all. In the US, I love Thai food and eat it regularly. I have my favorite dishes and so does my husband, so we thought it'd be interesting to see the difference in the interpretations of typical Thai dishes. They did not have an English menu, so I could only understand about half of what they offered, but did my best to order what I thought would be good. While the dining experience was slightly confusing (I don't speak the greatest French...), the food was delicious! I had some sort of vegetable spring roll to start, and a tofu curry as a main. I don't remember the appetizer that my husband ordered, but he got fried rice as his main. Everything we ate was freshly prepared and flavorful, and slightly different than the Thai food we experience in the US, but still very good. I'm sure that if I tried to find this place again without the help of a map, I would be lost. But the best part of travel is discovering hidden gems off the planned schedule... that is not listed in the English guide book. Overall, very pleasant experience.
