We wanted to check it out and see if maybe it'd be a good fit for middle school (we had all intentions of finishing elementary at our local elementary school). We were so impressed with how individualized everything is, and how small the groups were. After the tour, we decided that we'd finish the year at our school, and transfer to IDEA House for 5th grade and beyond. Our son is absolutely thriving under the care of Mrs. Shumate and the staff. They all care immensely for their students, and it shows. Our youngest just started there this year and he's doing amazingly well. While at our local elementary, he was suspended multiple times and was constantly stressed. He'd crawl under desks and cry and was just not doing well. Since starting at IDEA House, he's made so much progress academically, but more importantly, he doesn't stress about school, loves going, and is thriving. I highly recommend IDEA House for anyone with children that have unique needs and need something more than a public or private school can offer. I appreciate that everyone at IDEA House is there because they understand and enjoy working with unique needs children.

Very inconsistent and unjust treatment of residents. Some residents get yelled at for sitting in…read morecertain places while others get to sit in the same place and no one says anything to them. I've seen people thrown out in the middle of winter into the snow just because they spoke up for themselves. I've seen staff treat the homeless like criminals even though everyone's situation is different. This place isn't all sunshine and rainbows like so many people are trying to make it seem. The staff are on a power trip; including the security in the cafeteria. I went to grab a single hat before dinner and the security told me "you can shop after dinner, bud." Like, I wasn't going to "shop" I just wanted a hat. What does it matter if I grab it before or after? I've had staff talk down to me and threaten to throw me out when I spoke up for myself. They don't like people with minds of their own in places like this. Sure, it's clean, and it's a place to stay but you might as well be sitting in the emergency room. There's no space in the day room. They have like 30 guys sharing 1 bathroom and they won't let you in the back to use the bathroom that has the appropriate number of toilets. If you knock and ask, they give you the worst attitude like you asked them for a hundred bucks or something. They don't give you enough time to sleep. You can't go to bed until 9pm and they wake you up, sometimes by shaking you, at 6am. Some people take a while to fall asleep and some people take a while to wake up. I have explained this to them many times but they don't seem to care. The only reason this place is as popular as it is is because they put up a good front and use the name of God to make themselves look better than they actually are. It's not a good place to live. This would be fine if it were a halfway house or a group home or something like that but it's not. It's a homeless shelter. Not all homeless people are on drugs or have a criminal record. Some of us just have really bad luck. This kind of thing is a fine example of how assumptions ruin things for the people that could actually use it. I am enraged and saddened at the way I've seen people treated here. They have no understanding of mental health at all so if someone is having a rough day, instead of trying to comfort them, they yell at them and threaten them with further homelessness. It's disgusting. To anyone thinking about donating here: don't. There are much more humane places that would actually use your donations to help people in the right way. This place is more like a zoo than a shelter. And the staff are more like corrections officers than volunteers. Don't let the smiles and the kind words fool you. Behind closed doors, these people are quite cruel to the needy.

Truth be told, I wish I had more detailed information about Akron Makerspace, because the space here is truly awesome. I found out about it at Ingenuity Fest 2017, where I learned that they offer both classes and open houses for "makers" or wannabe makers. I sort of stored it in the back of my mind, and decided to try it out around my boyfriend's birthday. I signed us up for a CNC cutting class for about $50/person. If you aren't familiar with CNC cutting, it's basically a very high level computer program that allows you to engrave wood or metal in a very detailed fashion (sorry if there are any nerds out there that are screaming at the computer saying "NO, NO, it's so much more than that!). Truthfully, CNC is much more than that, but Akron Makerspace seeks to condense what would normally be a 6 week course into a few hours so you can go home with something you made. Pretty awesome huh? Lest you be deterred thinking, computer programming? That doesn't sound like me... They have a TON of other stuff here! I'd tell you to check out their website, but really, that wouldn't even tell you all the stuff they have here. The best way is to just drop in and see what it's all about. They do offer open houses weekly where folks can just drop in to check it out, or get help from the expert makers on a project they are working on. Some examples are: welding, vinyl cutting, jewelry and stamp making, robotics, wood carving... the list goes on and on. Basically, if there's something you want to make and you just aren't sure where to start, THIS is the place. They do offer memberships for $35/month which can get you open access to the space (you get a fancy key and everything) and access to all their equipment, as well as a storage space for your projects. I do think the classes are a fun way to get your foot in the door, as they have several different ones (there's a calendar on their website). I'm told that they are planning on collaborating with some local restaurants to do some date night offerings, which I think would be awesome. All in all, this place is definitely worth a visit, and creative people will love how much they have to offer!

They also take donations here, so it's easy to drop off that bag of items that has been riding around in your car the last few months.
