The house is open on the weekend (from about May to October), and always has a friendly guide to show you round. Even if you've been before it's worth going again because they are constantly rediscovering old features and restoring it to its former glory. This is a wonderful opportunity to see the progress of historical reconstruction. Added bonus - there is always live 17th-century music in the house on Saturdays. Also - If you enjoy concerts, and live in the area, then make sure you ask them for their list of events. They are always high-calibre and thoroughly enjoyable if you like that sort of thing. I wasn't really sure what my mum would make of getting her one for Christmas reading 'Beware of the old woman'. In the end I didn't buy anything, but I really enjoyed my visit If you have some money to spend and want to decorate your garden (or house) with unusual stuff this is your place.

You can find blue & white china, garden furniture, old watering cans, original eiderdowns, lots and lots of things to hang on the wall, ornamental items, new and old its all there. I fully recommend you go, browse, rummage and enjoy even if you leave without buying anything. The lady who runs it is always there and at peak times like christmas you will find her open till late in the night - great for that last minute gift.

I've found some real bargains here: prices are often cheaper than in London charity shops. For instance on a recent trip I spotted ginger jars for £2.50 each. They also have some lovely carved wooden first-hand stuff. Kids mini jigsaws and money boxes with little carved animals on them. Lovely and very reasonably priced. In the back they have a book nook. It has to be described that way: nice neat shelves and a central padded bench were you can sit and read if you wish. The staff are friendly, and I defy anyone not to find something of interest.

Marlborough is must be one of the few places left where they don't have Tesco and Sainsbury's on…read morethe main street! Waitrose is on the High Street though, and in listed buildings I believe. As such, the store has maintained the old frontage of the buildings, including columns! Inside it's just as posh really. They have a very nice range of food, tending towards the slightly trendy. I love some of the yoghurts they do, with flavours including ginger and lemon curd. Yum! Service is good. Head downstairs (stairs or lift) and you'll find yourself in the back entrance hall. They have toilets (rather over used) and trolleys. There's a choice of three different trolleys for kids of different sizes and you can also get a small one with a holder for your shopping list. The rather nice car park at the back stretches down to the River Kennet, so you can take the kids to feed the ducks as part of a shopping trip.
