Prospect High School is a disgusting smear of a memory in my life. Granted, many of it's problems were rooted in funding. By the time I'd become a junior, we could only salvage two dances--Homecoming and Prom; probably because you couldn't qualify as a high school without at least those.
We had a sad, minimal selection of AP classes, and I remember all too many peer conversations agreeing that, if only Prospect had more variety, we might be able to excel and learn about subjects we might love, and have better chances at being admitted into better colleges. And on top of the obvious stacking of AP's into science and history, students were required to sign "AP contracts" the semester before, which supposedly sybolized enrollment. In other words, if you were a student who wanted to work hard, but realized later that this load, that you had no idea would be this hefty, was too much for you,.. SURPRISE, you can't drop it! too fucking bad. you can cry to every fucking staffee you can think of. you're stuck. happy failing. I went all the way to the district office to have my "contract," a dingy blue paper that only half of the students remembererd to turn in, upturned. So many students cried.
There's really no end to how much I detest this school. This is a school where spanish teachers are allowed to make their students pay money if they can't speak spanish fluently enough--a form of punishment that is atrocious; if the teacher gave each student five dollars and THEN implemented the policy, it's different. but when you're asking an array of mixed students, with mixed backgrounds, to pay you a set amount of money, which they might not even have to spare, to comensate for a slower pace of learning than the students around them.. fucking ridiculous. extortion, much? I have less than no respect for you. I promise.
An old health teacher has now been transferred to the art department. Because the school decided to cut health ed., and thought it was a good idea. Fuck that. for so many reasons. This teacher thinks she's qualified because she, and I quote, "think it'd be super cool, and could totally get into that whole chill, purple-haired teacher scene." What the flying fuck. And the senior 3D design teacher had way more know-how than even the OTHER art teacher had. THAT teacher had the nerve to go as far as ALTER other students work, smacking unwanted rhinestones on their pieces, and using cement glue to attach paper to matting. ..did you get that? this lady, who supposedly has enough credential to get herself employed as an art teacher, chose a glue, that seeped entirely through the student's work, RUINING the piece, and even tried to compensate by adding MORE, to "even out the effect" so it'd look intentional, or some bull.
A school where they'll build a new front office, but leave the locker rooms/changing rooms so shitty that personal belongings are stolen every period.
A school where it's normal for the school to lose the rented book you returned, for which the best consolement you'll get is a pat from a fellow student saying "it's okay, happened to me too."
A school where, when you go to other schools and reveal where you're from, everyone sneers? We were never known for sports. or for our clubs. Our principal was an angry two-faced bitch, and her vp was just as blind and bitter. Our poor single-handed school cop could barely transport himself to the scene in time for anything to be left. A clueless integrated sci teacher (whose class was basically run by clips of magic school bus and some "junkyard wars" crap) was chased out by harassment by his own students, who made fun of him whenever he left the room. I got a 128% in that class because he took all of his quizzes straight from the text book. I even quoted the answer section in the back to correct a point he made a typo on. He couldn't even recognize the risk of toxic fumes when some kid stuck a pen in the pencil sharpener.
Too many teachers practiced favoritism. A good many of them brought their daily moods to class, even, and personal opinion here, but teaching a classroom of teenagers is a fragile task. If you lose respect for what you're trying to give them; your time, your knowledge, your effort--there's no way in hell they're going to listen to you. If you're about to use twenty minutes per class period to complain about your evening, if you're about to cry over how mean it was that the average student evaluation came back as reading "inefective," if you're about to obviously keep favoring one student who simply comes to class early and is willing to talk you like you're young again--then go the fuck back to school. either relearn how to teach, go back to being a immature careless teen again, or for fucks sake, go back, and fight for that dream that you really DID want to capture. If working here, where your image is going to be part of the most tender part of so many childrens' lives, doesn't make you happy, then what the fuck are you doing? read more
