Food is good but so overpriced that it usually doesn't make the cut. Husband and I wanted some carry-out today and I got a craving for some Pronto food... but then I considered how much it would cost for just one app and 2 sandwiches for lunch and realized, I couldn't justify $40 for a lunch for 2 with nothing really spectacular. Even the addition of anything other than hard chips with your sandwich is $2.50. That just seems a bit much for lunch. If prices saw an even slight decrease- I think Pronto would see a profit growth. In the heart of downtown Royal Oak, Pronto's is an eclectic, lively restaurant with bright colors and attached to a bar and bakery/candy store. It seemed like the right place to start our girls night out. Food was fair (not standout but not terrible)- As far as the menu goes, the sandwich side seems endless. I ended up going with the seasonal specials though so I had a cup of tomato curry soup and the Festive Salad of buttery bib lettuce, sliced crunchy pears, candied cinnamon pecans, creamy Gorgonzola cheese, grilled chicken chunks and tart cranberries. Soup was a bit bland actually because I would have preferred some juicy tomato bites mixed into the creamy soup, along with more curry flavor. Salad was GINORMOUS and all the ingredients fit my flavor-texture combo requirement of fruit-nut-cheese. I also like the grainy mustard vinaigrette to go with it. However, I wished the pears were more ripe and the chicken was less dry. We all split the sweet potato fries which were cooked well - crispy on the outside, soft on the inside and a bit on thick side. Shaky service (friendly but not accurate)- My bigger gripes with the place had to do with the inconsistency in service. We had a welcoming server who checked on us many times, but random issues throughout the night made the experience a little difficult for our group. For instance, the restaurant apparently does not offer a list of draft beer because it "changes so frequently" and the servers are "supposed to memorize all of them." Now, this was actually exciting to me at first because I looked forward to hearing what was on tap that I hadn't tried before. However, when I asked him to at least give me an idea of what were the local drafts, he could only name a couple. I was fine going with a Great Lakes Christmas Ale, but it would have been better to know the whole list so I could be more confident with my choice and feel enticed to try something else. Also, when the orders came out, our table runner brought another party's food to us so he took ended up taking all the plates back. Then when our server tried to rectify the situation, he realized one girl at our table was supposed to have the Pronto Salad but he had instead put in two orders of my salad. Lastly, when the split checks came (which was very nice of him to offer to do this for a group of five), they had items added on by accident and switched around within the group so the kind gesture ended up being a bit more hassle than help. Final verdict- I would definitely not mind returning to see if it would be a better experience when with a smaller group and trying their other signature items on the standard menu. read more

Coming back from the dog park - hungry. Read a few reviews that said that they allow dogs on the patio. I called to double check and we are good to go. Get here, the waiters greet our dog and bring us menus. Meanwhile our dog, normally a loud talker, is super friendly and everyone on the patio thinks he's just the most well behaved dog. 30 minutes later and it turns out there's a new rule and dogs aren't allowed.... so we are asked to leave. Also, LOL @ Tony G's intro, "The service was anything but Pronto!" Well, Pronto, you're just asking for that kind of intro with that kind of name. Especially the exclamation point that is not included in your yelp title. One evening GPO (girl plus one) and I headed over to Pronto! for a nice evening of dinner and drinks on a patio. We ordered drinks and were served Pronto! (sorry, i can't get enough of that joke). The waiter served GPO a Red Stripe, stood there and watched her take a drink. He then laughed and said, "Oh, you know that draft was only $2.50 (or a similarly priced special), but the bottle is $5." GPO refused to take another drink of Red Stripe the rest of the meal. Rather than leaving a tip, she simply left the full beer on the check. She also has red hair, so that is why she has now become Red Stripe b/c you know the waiter thinks of her every time he serves one on a Monday night. As for as the restaurant, Pronto-ness was not the issue with me. I enjoy a lackadaisical waiter now and again--usually when I'm in no hurry and am fantasizing I'm sitting at a street cafe in Italy or something...But Pronto! only disappoints me with its wide selection of decent but not great choices that all seem to taste the same. Especially all of their pasta dishes. Normal dishes are all good, but I have yet to find something that sticks out. Anyway, regardless, Pronto! is a great place for an enjoyable patio experience. I have been here twice, and both times were good. My favorite part of Pronto would be that you can pretty much doctor up any of the sandwiches that they make. I ordered the grilled cheese (which gets a 10 out of 10) no tomato, plus avacado. Without looking at me like I was crazy, the waiter said no problem. The desserts are very good too. Atmosphere shoddy..dark and unwelcoming. My last visit to Prontos, used to be a vibrant great place to go. We stayed because of memories that the food was good. It was fair... Service terrible, one waitress working inside and out. We had to ask to place our order after 30 minutes..we were the only people in the south dining area. Had to ask for napkins and eating utensils. I called Pronto to report it so others wouldn't have the same problem. They suggested I call Restaurant Connection to get my order credited. Ok after loving pronto for so many years, I have given it its last chance. I'm so sad since my favorite sandwich of all "chucks too hot to handle", has changed, and not in a good way. This place is a hot mess!! My friends and I (group of 6) came for brunch. There were no other tables in the restaurant so being busy was not the issue. Not only did it take us forever to get our food, my friends order was messed up. She did not get to eat with us because it took so long to fix her order, (not sure why because when I cook eggs at home it takes like 5 minutes tops). My omelette was greasy and my berries were soggy and gross. The waiter messed our bills up like 5 times...when all we needed was one simple change. This is a very difficult review . We went on Sunday afternoon after the Lions game . Arrived sometime after 5 . Had not been in many years . Took a while to be seated , made a water order . Went to the Men's room and the smell was overwhelming. Simply a urine smell . When I got back to the table my girlfriend headed to the Women's lav. I had told her of my experience . She returned with the same story . We discussed leaving and exited never seeing any staff . 5pm on New Year's Eve and no one had done a Bathroom check ? In my head, I still associate Pronto with the remaking of downtown Royal Oak. And then I remember that they opened more than 20 years ago and I feel old. And sad. Mostly old. In that time, I have had quite a few tasty sandwiches and decadent desserts. To that end, they get a bonus nostalgia star. My most recent visit was really just a 2 star experience. I was on the wall side of a table for 6 and could not get our server's attention to save my life. My friends seemed to have better luck getting a second round of drinks. I drank my drink, then I drank the ice that had been near my drink, then I drank all of my water, then I sat there with no beverage of any kind for quite some time. I actually had to call him back after he took a drink order from my companions and then proceeded to ignore me. (Full disclosure: I made the mistake of teasing the server. I'm from Kentucky. If I ask you what kind of bourbon you have and you say "Jack Daniels" I'm going to say that's not technically a bourbon. Damn. Nobody gives the wine snobs a hard time. It was a joke, I hardly think it warranted beverage ostracism) When it came time to order food, they had run out of chicken pot pie. I hadn't chosen a plan B from the encyclopedia of sandwiches, so I ordered the evening's special in a pinch. Broiled salmon and rice pilaf is usually a safe bet. Alas, the rice pilaf was just rice, no pilaf. And the salmon was glazed with what tasted like simple syrup. It was fish and sugar, with no depth of flavor at all. A little sweetness is good, but you need some maple or orange or some sort of flavor explanation for it. Wedding reception salmon would have been better. Ultimately, my bill wasn't too large - probably because I drank hardly any alcohol - but it still felt like I overpaid for the experience. read more

Simply amazing! The food is awesome, the staff is nice, and their desserts almost smile at you through their pretty little display case. Can we talk about the drink menu now? They make mouth-watering sweets and gift baskets that are good for every occasion and are conveniently located next to the restaurant. This place is a sandwich lovers paradise! They have them broken out by vegetarian, chicken, beef, and pork and they use unique ingredients to make great sandwiches. The appetizers (try to roasted garlic) and pastas are also great and they have a nice variety of other options and they always have monthly specials based on the season. They have fresh food! Great sandwiches, chili. Oh yeah, & the sweets/desserts....there's a display case/counter in the room where the front door is, so after eating my meal, I'd be peering into the case, nose pressed to the glass, trying to decide what I wanted. I usually got a piece of some sort of cake that had chocolate in it. They also had humungous cookies, which looked good, but I don't think I ever tried. So, good for brunch, lunch, dinner, & of course, dessert! When the weather's nice, they have outdoor seating by the entrance. So, when you enter, there's a little waiting area, & that's also where the sweets display case is located, like a bakery. That room also has some restaurant seating towards the back, although I don't think I ever sat there. If you ventured off to the room to the right, that's where the bar was. Dining was in the room to the left. I believe they also expanded their bar area into the place next door. Supposedly (per gay friends), the bar is gay-friendly--good for people who want to know....'cuz this ain't San Francisco, where there's a billion options. I never hung out at the bar, so I can't say I noticed. I think right before I left, they'd expanded even more & had a store on the end of the block selling food. The staff here is quite nice. I once actually forgot & left my credit card with the bill after paying (I think we were in the middle of some conversation, so I was distracted), and didn't discover it until the next day when I tried to pull it out to pay for something. So, I backtracked, & called to see if I had left it there, which I had. So, they held it for me until I could come pick it up a few days later. And I didn't get any weird charges on my statement--whew! It's located in pedestrian friendly downtown Royal Oak, on a street parallel to & just one block west of Main. 608 South Washington, if they haven't fixed the address listed above...I put in for it to be corrected, so we'll see. There's street parking nearby. Only time I've had trouble parking in downtown Royal Oak is the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, when the whole friggin' world is out here drinking! Otherwise, parking is a piece of cake here, compared to SF. You just may have to walk a couple blocks extra, but are still able to park in the downtown area (street, lots, garages). Pronto is pretty good if you're looking for a freshy/hippy experience on the sandwich tip. I've been twice, first time I ordered the roast beef with mixed results and tonight I got the #11, which i believe is their signature grilled chicken sandwich. This chicken sandwich was muuuuch better. That sandwich was very well made and each part balanced out nicely. Prices are a little high for what you're getting, especially if you opt for fries or onion rings for your meal. 10 dollars for a sandwich and a plate of fries is a little much in my book, but I've been accused of being cheap in the past. I've only ever sat on the patio but it's pretty nice out there. A little cramped but it's one of those sidewalk jobs where you're right up ons everything. Service has been fair both times. It seems there are some super outgoing and chatty waitpeeps here and then there are awkward and quiet ones. It took a little longer to get the food than I would imagine but it was about 7 pm so I'll give them a pass. All in all, Pronto isn't on my regular rotation of places. It's a good destination once in awhile when you're feeling something different. The menu is diverse enough that most should be able to find something to eat. There's standard fare here like burgers and a few mexican dishes, but go for something new that's a little different. It seems they like to add a little here or there to something fairly standard and I definitely welcome that. Oh, and if you are avoiding high calories, stay the hell out of the bakery. Went with the fam (party of 12) to Pronto! for my birthday dinner over the weekend. It seemed like the ideal place: huge menu, lots of vegetarian options, not too high-priced, good desserts, able to accomodate a big group, etc. My mom and I each had the vegetarian quesadillas and were very underwhelmed. Plus, the first round of guac they brought out with it was fizzy (we sent it back, and the second set they brought out was fine). My uncle had the Chuck's Too Hot to Handle sandwich though, which was phenomenal. And the sweet potato fries were a big hit with everyone at the table. The veggie lasagna also got two thumbs up. For dessert, we had a delicious carrot cake slice, a heavenly white chocolate raspberry cheesecake slice, and a wedge of tasty toffee bumpy cake. The desserts were definitely the best part of the meal. Had a snafu involving our credit card slip and tip (in cash) mysteriously disappearing, and management was less that ideal in smoothing the situation out. Overall, good dinner, great dessert, an unfortunate bad taste in service at the end. There are much better restaurants in the Roak these days to check out when you're in the area, but I would go back for the desserts. read more

Pronto is a good catch-all; nice place for lunch, good place to stop for drinks that isn't full-on and can still cater to a mixed crowd. I love sitting outside in the summer, it makes eating out so much better. I think it's safe to say that I've ended up here whenever I'm in Detroit, the only problem being is that my friends that live there seem to get burnt out from going here regularly so by the time I suggest it, they feel like they've worn it into the ground. Took my second ever trip to Pronto today. The first time I went was during the summer a few years back and it was a much more pleasant experience. It is a nice place to sit outside on the patio and enjoy some good weather. That's pretty much all the sugar coating I'll throw in. My trip there today was so-so. I went with the chicken noodle soup to start. It was very hearty. Large chunks of chicken, plenty of noodles and carrots. As a main dish I chose the shredded chicken burrito. The burrito wasn't bad at all, but at the same time it didn't blow my socks off. The one thing I did like was the generous helping of sour cream, salsa, tomatoes, and guacamole that accompanied it. I always get bummed out when places up charge you for sour cream or guacamole. One thing to note is that one person in my party did find a hair in their dish. The waitress handled it and had a new dish made and brought out quickly. Overall, the menu is a nice, service was adequate, and the prices weren't bad. read more

let me just get this out of the way: they named it pronto. but since their service isn't so pronto it just made everybody feels like they're actually slower than our expectation. so yeah, lesson learned, never name your business pronto unless you can live up to the name. and that's why it's 1 star down. we came in here on a sunday for brunch during the royal oak restaurant week. it was super busy so we waited for about 15 minutes. we can't stop laughing at the entertaining names they have for their food. "hot phil", "hot chuck", "9 inch bumper". excuse my dirty mind. the interior is as colorful as the exterior. i don't know if it's exactly tastefully done. but it's definitely colorfully done with fun. i wasn't really sure about this place after reading the menu and looking at the crazy colors. i got a "california chick" sandwich with a side of sweet potato fries (please refer to the photo). the buns were soft and warm, the grilled chicken was flavorful and tasty, the sweet potato fries were done right. my two other friends had the "hot phil" sandwich and they really liked it too. they also have this bombbbbb caramel cheese cake you HAVE to have. the service was good. the server was very friendly and considerate. i'd love to come back here soon. read more

This is a tough review for me. Great place for a sandwich or a quick bite... but not the place I'm egging to go eat at. I can't really say I've ever been disappointed by their nachos - I know, I know... you're like "They're nachos... how do you screw up nachos?" but for the most part, they're pretty good!!! I've had a couple of decent sandwiches - though the last time I ordered my favorite it came with rock hard avocado. Any idiot knows you don't serve avocado that you can't even puncture with a toothpick.... I've never ever ever been impressed with their desserts. Visually delicious, flavor-wise disappointing. Cake is usually dry. Probably because it sits in a case all day. Nachos, 4 stars. Sandwiches, 3+ stars (more when the ingredients are right). The seasonal gazpacho they serve during the summer is good too, 4 stars. Desserts, not to much. Patio is a plus. Total, 3-ish stars. read more

A slice of PRIDE in Royal Oak! Though the experience I had at Pronto was sub-par, the food was excellent. I highly recommend trying one of their cold pasta salads, their soup (the chicken noodle is excellent) or one of their deli sandwiches. Some places in Royal Oak do deli-style that's akin to a ball of grease, but the Pronto sandwich wasn't heavy in my stomach, and tasted great. The two problems I had with the place was the service, and the bees. Firstly, the service was extremely slow. We opted to dine in the outside cafe, which would seem to warrant slow service, but there were ample servers ready (5 or so, and it wasn't real busy either) but we still had to wait about 20 minutes to get our "how was everything?" visit. The bees. I would suggest eating inside during the spring, because if you're allergic to bees like I am, this will not be a pleasant experience at all. Yellowjackets swarm the area because of the flowers and the sweet smell of the food, and it's worse than a picnic on Belle Isle! Still, were we inside I think we would have had a better experience. I must take one star off for the service, but really I would suggest trying Pronto out to anyone who loves lunch. And who doesn't love lunch? read more
