If you get your hair cut, you have to get it cut by Danae. Here's the key to her success: she cuts your hair the way you want and envision it versus what she thinks your hair should be or look like. Basically, whether you explain what you want with diagrams, flow charts or request an appointment according to your strongest chakra in conjunction with a full moon or if you don't know what the heck you want...she can and will cut your hair beautifully!!! I love the way Danae cuts hair! Not just the way my haircut turns out (which is great), but just the WAY she cuts hair... when she's doing my layers, she holds my hair up and snips quickly and upbeatly, like she's doing a little dance. As bits of split ends fall rhythmically around me, I can't help but wanna do a little jig myself! Getting my hair cut has always been a very conscious and somewhat painful event for me, and I'd had such lukewarm to horrid experiences in the city that I'd never gone back to the same place twice. After going to Danae twice now, I feel that I can trust her to consistently give me what I want. She's no fuss, no bullshit, just straightforward and efficient. I'm ESPECIALLY sensitive about what my bangs look like, and she has been the only stylist thus far to get them remotely to my exactly liking! She doesn't wash your hair beforehand, which I was a little disappointed about at first, but I understand why she chooses not to (the sink she would use is her kitchen sink, which she admitted to me doesn't exactly achieve the utmost level of professionalism or cleanliness... I mean, who really wants their head rinsed over remnants of leftover food?). Finally, it's cool to know that because she's doing it on her own, she's not representing the salon she works at--she's representing herself! When I was in fourth the grade, I discovered hair gel. I was hanging out with my brother who was ten years older in his bedroom that my dad had converted from a part of our garage. It was partially detached from the house, and his walls were all veneer paneling because it was easier than putting up drywall. It felt like a different world: Doc Martens, Men Without Hats and Mr. Mister records, yearbooks, cologne. Until then, my hair had either been: long (when I was a toddler, and blond), or the modified no-maintenance bowl cut that nearly every boy with perfectly straight hair has at one point in his life. I didn't really decide on either style. I couldn't have cared less. But that day I got picky: directing my brother, who was manning the blow dryer, with precision. Once I discovered the joy of smearing unnatural goop through one's hair and bending the strands in a contest of your will v. theirs, there was no turning back. Eventually, I ditched the blow dryer. I vacillated between gel and mousse. It was the *90's*, y'know? My hair went from looking slick and shiny like a little muenster to carefully disarranged parted-down-the-middle-faux-SoCal-surfer. Then I started growing it out as far as my school would let me, which was only about to the neck of my polo shirts. Then came: sideburns, chopping it short again, intermediate vagueness, and the bedhead spikes that everybody recognized me by in college. When I was living in Europe, I realized that it was a new millennium: accordingly, I tossed out the gel and bought a stick of wax. I no longer get pissed if you tousle my hair. I no longer spend more than a minute or two on it in the morning. But still, I haven't changed much from that little kid with a tube of LA Looks. I've given up trying to have "iconoclast" rising up from my scalp -- these days, I'd rather mostly pass by unnoticed except by cute girls and potential employers. But still, just like I micromanaged my brother's blow drying skills the first time product entered my hair, I'm picky as hell about my barbers. For me, the stylist/client relationship should have lawyer/client or doctor/patient legal status, it's so important. I want my hair to look cool, sure, but even more important is that it not like it's *trying* to be cool. I want my hair to look like me, but I also want it to make me look better. I want to feel like I just got a haircut, but I for sure don't want to LOOK like I just got a haircut. Oh, and also: I want all this for cheap. So, "$30 Advanced Technique Haircut" does all this and more and totally costs $30. Not to mention that you can buy tubs of Sebastian X-tah Crude Clay for the un-fucking-heard-of price of $5. And no, it's not the name of the salon. This salon has no name. It's so cool that you can't even name it, just like YHWH. Actually, it's just one person (um, also like YHWH? OK, I'm stopping with the Bible jokes now)): Danae, and she has a full-service salon in her home, thus the lack of address and phone number. If you're worried about going someplace that doesn't serve you a glass of red wine and give you a scalp massage with your haircut, there's probably a liquor store not too far away from Danae's house, and you could always rub your scalp on her welcome mat for a few minutes beforehand. Danae's been cutting hair for 23 years, she's certified, she's incredibly nice and easy-going, and she has a wider repertoire of styles than anyone you'll find in a traditional salon, and I've been to a couple of salons (Salons) around here. More importantly, she succeeds in understanding the kind of style and look that you're going for, whether that be the anime fireball-shooter spikes of that guitarist dude in that one band, the classic girl bob, the bizarre dye jobs that Lower Haight people get to celebrate when they decide to leave Duboce Park and head over to Burning Man, or the subtle fauxhawk-forward-comb-fade of overeducated assistant editors of science textbooks. read more

Three reasons I love Danae: 1) Her name. She's got two vowels right next to each other! Crazy! 2) She's probably the first hair stylist I ever had a conversation with instead of grumpily staring at the mirror, or reading a magazine. She seems really mellow and quiet, but then she's all, "Oh, I went to India for a month with $5 in my pocket. The camel carnival was disappointing." This is much better conversation than the time I went to Supercuts and the stylist told me about how she doesn't like the sound of ambulance sirens because they remind her of her dead husband. 3) At some point, I had that short bob with long bangs that everyone had last year, and it started to grow out and look funky. I let Danae know that I wanted to grow out my hair past my shoulders, and to re-shape it so it wouldn't look funky as it grew out. Folks, that was at least a year ago and my hair still don't look funky; it's layered and dynamic like I got it trimmed more recently. UHHMAZING. Bonus reason: I like that she doesn't wash your hair beforehand because I have thick, wavy hair that's different on either side of my head and other stylists blow dry it stick straight before cutting. Meanwhile, I'm thinking the whole time, "My hair will not look anything like this tomorrow when I towel dry it and run out of the gym." Getting your hair cut in someone's home might be a little weird for some people, but don't knock it before you try it! I always go to Danae for a trim and to redo my layers and she does a great job every time. I actually just tell her, "do what you did last time" and she does the same great job everytime. The one setback is that she doesn't wash your hair and she'll blowdry it when she's done, but she doesnt style it. However, I don't think that a great haircut needs to come complete with a wash and style, as long as the actual cut is good. She doesn't rush you and always makes sure you're happy with the end results. She's very good with emails for scheduling appts and she rarely runs behind schedule. I would recommend her to anyone. I've been to a couple (much pricier) salons in the city and she is by far the best. read more

Danae is da bomb! I didn't think there was such a thing as a mid-range haircut in SF -- somewhere between the hyper-chic $55 salons, half the cost of which goes into interior decorating, and the $10-15 chop-shops that keep costs low by selling your cut hair to wig makers (or so I suspect). Then I discovered Danae. Not only does Danae a great mid-range cut at $35, she gives a cut worthy of, or perhaps better than, the $55+ salons I have been to. And though I won't speak for female haircuts, I suspect most guys would be similarly pleased -- she does an excellent job with our kind, the dudes that want to look good but go in being like "UHMM..." barely possessing a 6th grade vocabulary when it comes to talking about hair. My conversation went something like this: Me: "I want to look like I did in this picture, except not totally, maybe, like, changed a bit." Danae: "OK, how do you want it changed?" Me: "Like. Uh... maybe not as... flat? Is that a thing?" Danae (holding out her thumb and index finger): "Maybe this long?" Me (as if reading pig entrails): "Yea...." After twenty minutes it was like she had read my mind -- perfectly short without looking too military and with plenty of room for play and styling. Today I got my haircut from Danae. She's funny and a great storyteller. The entire time she kept me entertained and gave me some great insight to how other stylists use fancy blow drying to mask a not so great cut. No wonder my hair looked like shit days after so many different hair cuts - from so many different stylists! UGH! I know their secret now! When you get your hair cut by Danae, expect to get a no nonsense cut (without a masking blow dry). Originally I wanted to get a sleek cut and brought a picture of Drew Barrymore's latest style. (Yes, I know I'll never look like Drew). The cut ended up with shorter and more layers than expected (my hair tends to move and have a mind of its own when layered). I left with a style that I've had before, but not what I wanted, nor did it look like the pictures I brought in at all. Danae even trimmed it shorter, by request, to make the layers less obvious. I've been going to Danae for over a year, maybe two now, and I hope I can keep going forever. This isn't a trendy salon, this isn't a place where you'll leave poofed and floofed feeling "FABULOUS"...ok maybe you will, I don't. I love going to Danae because it's easy, it's inexpensive, it's always what I want, and she's a fun chick who is no bullshit. I hate making hair appointments with a passion and hate going to them even more. It's a waste. I just want my hair in its style all the time. With Danae, I can email for an appointment, go within a week, and she will get me in and outta there quickly, do what I want, add her two cents. Original review (10/06): So my hair is deceptively tricky-- at least for me. While I have the Asian long, straight thing going on, I also have those days when it wants to act up into a wavy/frizzy mess, thanks to my Irish side. This makes me really wary of trying out new stylists, but I have to say I hit the jackpot with Danae. While I didn't give her very much to go on, she came up with this amazing, cute haircut that makes me look thinner and is also wash-and-wear! Totally my type of girl. BUT-- it gets better. I washed my hair and it didn't behave for me as well as it did for her. While it got progressively better with each successive washing, I called to ask her if maybe I was doing something wrong or maybe needed to part/dry it a different way. She invited me to come back in, and today she worked her magic on the part that was misbehaving, and it looks fantastic. She deserves 10 stars, 5 for the cut (as good as one that's 3 times as much and takes 3 times longer) and 5 for the service. That's something really rare these days. UPDATE (1/07): Went for another excellent haircut, love it. I don't even have that "I just went and got my hair cut" look, it just looks like all of a sudden I have amazing hair. 5 stars, absolutely. Danae had been cutting my hair for the past two years in San Francisco, and for the price, I really couldn't ask for anyone better! I always thought my expectations for haircuts were reasonable, until I visited almost every single hairdresser I've been to, and it turns out that their expectation is "cut it any way I want, even if it's the opposite of what you want." So, yeah, my expectations may have been shifted to "don't screw it up," but I was sufficiently happy with the value of the haircuts I was getting with Danae. Danae really makes an effort to listen to what you have to say and try her best to cut your hair how you want it cut. She doesn't shampoo or wash your hair, or style it in super-crazy, ultra-trendy ways, but she cuts it how you like. I'm guessing this is because she feels bad when people don't like their haircuts. Today, Danae-day, I wasn't sure if I felt up to bright-eyed exchanges and the bubbly, kissy-kissy warmth that seems to traditionally permeate interactions with most stylists. Truth betold, I hadn't left my house before the time of my appointment, which was for 3:45, and my neurotransmitters were abuzz from lack of proper stomach funds. It was after having narrowly escaped the clutches of a certain Vidal Sassoon student stylist (who'd offered me a free "creative cut", one in which I would have had no respective say in), that I came to Danae. For the past 6 months, I've been cutting my own hair with mixed results and, up until recently, my pixie cut had been bevelled into a bushy & bleached bouffant. Enchanted by her Yelp reviews, I e-mailed her to make an appointment. I wanted to know what all this business was about not-feeling-like-you've-just-been-cut but more so looking-like-a-better-version-of-yourself. Because, really, how can it get any better than that without one being able to stand it? After being greeted at the foot of a mountainous staircase, I began my ascent and arrived into an apartment. Next to the kitchen was a small area with a swivel chair and other various cosmetologicial furnishings, complete with certificate, nail polishes, Nagel prints, colorful feather earrings, product--You know the drill. A houseplant, the likes of which this side of vitality has never before seen, splayed its tendrils across the vanity, daintily cradling small bins of disinfectant. Admittedly, I was having some decor-related doubts but was very dismissive of them. What is it about hair stylists, their very existence, which extracts all of your most hopeful but well-guarded thoughts concerning your appearance? "Warrior princess" is one such point-of-reference which has escaped my lips in the past. "Lesbian chic" is what came out this time but was met with dynamic understanding on behalf of Danae. She even enlightened me as to what a Chelsea-cut is, which I think gives me style points, hahaha. I never write yelp reviews for whatever reason, but I had a such a good experience getting my hair cut from Danae, I decided she will be MY FIRST. Danae is a cool person to talk to, no bs, friendly, and I love the idea of getting a haircut in someone's home...ah, just like mom used to make. She cut my hair better than how I was explaining or envisioning it, and understood my lazy hair needs. I have never been so satisfied with a haircut in my entire life--that's 24 years we're talkin' about! Danae was everything her yelp reviews said she was and MORE! I walked in skeptical as ever because no stylist has ever done for me what I wanted them to. She picked up on my personality right away and cut until my hair felt right to both of us. I've lived in the city for almost six years and never found a hair stylist I was satisfied with until I met Danae last week! I arrived with my long, wavy, thick hair freshly washed since she doesn't wash or blowdry and I told her exactly what I wanted. Danae is friendly and funny and her cutting skills are meticulous and very skilled. She cut it exactly as I requested and brought my healthy, long but boring hair to vibrant, swingy life. I've been fielding compliments from random strangers on a daily basis since. And, most importantly, both my husband and I love it! She's extremely responsive on e-mail; I was able to schedule an appointment within the same week that I contacted her. She also applied and shared with me the secret behind the amazing, special concoction she used to smooth the frizzies so common in humid and windy SF. She only takes cash or checks and her salon isn't wheelchair accessible situated as it is up a narrow flight of stairs. She told me to come back for a free adjustment if necessary, but I haven't had to. Since she cuts in her home, her salon is perfect for those looking for privacy during their cut. I hate hair cuts, but I hate my extremely thick hair more. My hair requires a lot of thinning & layering and I tried explaining this to a few hairstylists, but none did it to the way I liked. My hair was still as thick as ever. Finally, I stumbled across Danae's ad. She does magic in this lil alcove in her house! She's patient and really does listen to what you want. She's also very accommodating and will do her best to make her clients happy. I've been going to her for 2 years now and she always does a great job. I'm a firm believer that stylists are artists and they know what is best for you hair. I found Danae through Yelp and I'm very glad that I did. I told her I wanted to go shorter but let her do what she thought worked with my hair. Danae is the best. So there's her personality. She's extremely down-to-earth and welcoming. She doesn't judge or try to insert her creative opinion on what she thinks your hair should or should not look like. She listens. And genuinely cares about working to get you a style you're happy with and confident about. I went 8 weeks without a cut before seeing her. I've got really thick, short hair that was previously cultivated into a feminine faux hawk. I was done with the faux hawk, and wanted something a bit more every day, still with an edge. When I arrived at her place, Danae and I chatted for a few minutes the look I was going for, and how my hair had been cut before. And then she went to work. Throughout the process, she would stop and ask how it looked. Did I want more cut there? How was I planning to style? What kinds of products do I use? By the end, I realized that I've been paying $70 for haircuts at elitist salons far too long. Danae has given me, by far the best cut I've ever had. I really enjoyed my hair cut. Without having to pay an arm and a leg, but still felt like I did when I look in the mirror. Really happy with the way she took my non hair lingo, and translated it into exactly what I was shooting for. I have thick hair, I mean thick. I can honestly say that I have never had a haircut that felt as special as this one. Danae made me feel like the most important customer in the world. It's true, she operates out of her flat. But I thought that was the best part. I hate getting either tattooed or getting a haircut in a window on the street. Also, you know that the price you pay goes straight to her and doesn't get mitigated through any bureaucracy. I like to know that the person who has to put up with me is getting their fair share and not some percentage. I am a guy who refused to stop living as an undergraduate. I have long, thick hair that I was trying to grow out like Gaius Baltar. But alas, job interviews with the corporate world forced my hand and after 3 years of growing it out I had to get a drastic cut for an interview only 3 days away.
