From the very start, we felt genuinely welcomed and appreciated as part of their ohana. HKA creates a warm, family-oriented atmosphere where students ages 4 and up are encouraged to learn, grow, and thrive. The instructors are incredibly supportive and patient, taking the time to help each student develop not only their martial arts skills, but also confidence, discipline, and respect. Proper form and technique are reinforced early on in hopes of encouraging good habits. There are competitions (optional) throughout the year to provide the students an opportunity to test their skills. What we value most is how HKA teaches lessons that go far beyond self-defense. The values learned in training carry over into everyday life, helping students build strong character both inside and outside the dojo. It truly feels like being part of a community where everyone supports one another like family. If you're looking for a positive and enriching martial arts experience where your child can gain lifelong skills and make lasting friendships, we highly recommend visiting Hawaiian Kajukenbo Association and seeing for yourself what makes this dojo so wonderful.

I visited Mad Tiger on a weekday gi class and am impressed - Prof Eric and three of his awesome students (2x blue, 1x brown belt) welcomed me with open arms. The instructions from Prof Eric were situationally based that I could easily relate and practice. Rolling followed and you can easily assess the quality of the gym and instructor by the way students roll, especially with an out of town visitor - they practiced restraint and control, instead of cranking down to execute a submission (where injuries can occur) or using unscrupulous (i.e. butthole) techniques, ensuring everyone was able to have a good grappling session. Located in a converted warehouse in a residential area, close to Wheeler Army Airbase (Wahiawa), MTA has the vibe of an old school academy with a great professor and students. I know where I'll be visiting when I travel to Hawaii.

My children love training here--they've made great friends and gained valuable skills in Jiu-Jitsu. Beyond technique, they've developed confidence, respect, improved concentration, and learned self-control, discipline, and perseverance--skills that will last a lifetime. The way the coaches teach is exceptional. They explain techniques in a way that is easy for children to understand, making each lesson fun and engaging. This has helped my kids grasp the fundamentals quickly while enjoying the learning process. A few months ago my children participated in their first tournament, and Coach Maraya went above and beyond to support and encourage them, making the experience truly memorable. This type of dedication from the coaches is what makes this academy so special. Additionally, the convenience of the location is a huge plus. There's plenty of parking, and the academy is inside a 24-hour fitness facility, which means I can get my own workout in while my kids are training. We're grateful to be part of this community and highly recommend it to anyone seeking a positive, family-friendly environment to learn BJJ.

The introduction session was comprehensive and their analysis system reflected exactly how I was feeling about my own flexibility and body. With the initial stretches that they performed on me, I could tell that this was not just a surface level stretch that I thought. These sessions are need specific to the customer and it convinced me enough that the membership cost was worth the try. It only took me a few sessions to realize that this was something that I wish I had done earlier in my life and that even though I'm getting older, my body has never felt better. I even expanded from 25 minute sessions to 50 minute sessions immediately. My flexologist Jori has been fantastic in taking care of weekly issues I may have and also in creating a long term plan to keep my body prepared for my sessions at hockey. She's friendly and always willing to give great suggestions on even things I can do at home in between sessions. They even let you use their Normatec recovery equipment outside of your sessions at any time, which has been a wonderful perk since that equipment can be incredibly expensive to buy for home use. It's been nice to come to my appointment for a great stretch and just relax while the Normatec equipment can do its thing. I strongly suggest that if this type of personalized care is within your budget that you consider it heavily, especially if you have specific needs or wants with your body. The staff makes it easy to keep wanting to come back every time and the space is always a relaxing place to get yourself taken care of.
