United Masonry Contractors - Concrete cracks, no bonding, lifting

    United Masonry Contractors

I had to have a commercial space, which had an uneven concrete floor, skimmed to create a smooth…read moresurface for flooring that is to be installed on top. The owner of this concrete company (Ryan) was quick to respond and provide an estimate, and he guaranteed that I would love the end result. He spent one day chipping and cleaning the area, and the next day pouring the concrete (side note- I understand that it's legal, but it was very unsettling that he showed up on the second day wreaking of weed. Perhaps he didn't think I would notice or maybe he just didn't care, but it raised an eyebrow as he was there to do a professional job). According to him, the truck that he had arranged to come and pour, had concrete with some sort of stones mixed in that he did not plan on. So he spent time plucking stones out. I'm not sure why he didn't just contact the company he arranged the truck with and get the right material delivered (I was not aware of any of this until after the fact). By the end of that day, the floor looked beautiful, as it was still wet, and I paid promptly. Within a few days, there were cracks throughout. By the two week mark, the floor was so badly cracked that it was lifting EVERYWHERE and hollow underneath all of these areas. I immediately contacted him to come and correct this problem. He arrived a few days later. He did not pull up areas that were cracked and starting to crumble (these areas literally moved under our feet), he just poured concrete over them. Before it was even dried, the cracks were coming through. I asked him if he used a bonding agent as my contractor stated it did not look as if any was used. And the owner stated that he 'never really thought a bonding agent worked that good anyways'. Over the next few days, I had two flooring professionals and three contractors at the location, all telling me that the entire floor had to be chipped up and redone as it was already coming apart and would not withstand flooring being put on top of it. Additionally, every single one of them states that a bonding agent was clearly not used. It would be one thing if there were a few cracks here or there, but literally, the entire floor is pulling up and cracking, showing that there weren't just a few spots missed. There was just no bonding agent applied to begin with. Another mystery that the flooring specialists as well as the contractors couldn't quite put their finger on, was that no one could really confirm what material was actually used. Though I was told this job would be done with a self-leveling concrete, they do not feel this was the case. They honestly couldn't tell if it was mortar or stucco or whatever might've been left over in the truck. But it did not have the finish or coloring that it should've. I contacted the owner yet again and told him all of this, and that I wanted and deserved a refund as he did not provide the service he guaranteed. However, this time he did not respond. Some cracking here and there over years of use is to be expected, but the entire floor is in worse condition than before he did anything to it. A refund is absolutely necessary as I cannot salvage any of this and I have to pay to have it pulled up, cleaned, and done over. But without any response from him, now I have to take other steps. This was, and continues to be, an absolutely horrible experience and I hope no one else has to go through something like this.

Steve has gone out of his way to ensure that we have the materials and supplies we need, at times even sacrificing his personal time to meet our needs. Tanner's installation skills are terrific and even the third party installers Steve has recommended have been a joy to work with.

We went to Carpets Plus ColorTILE in Oneonta because I was referred to them by the Valinge company…read morewhich makes Woodura. That product was out of our budget, but we welcomed the opportunity to spend our money at a smaller business instead of Home Depot or online discounter. We were told to ask for Steve specifically, and he seemed to be the owner or manager. We went in to talk with him on Friday, and he was very eager to help us find something that would work for our entire home (new construction). I asked about engineered bamboo first (after the Woodura), but he told me it wasn't really "green" because of the glues. I replied that it was GreenGuard certified, and we didn't want vinyl because of the off-gassing. "Vinyl doesn't off-gas," he said, which is just a lie. Or maybe it's ignorance, I don't know. Anyway, I said NO, and that we were looking for something not petroleum-based. He shifted gears and started bringing out engineered woods, then some pressed-paper laminate (which, again, we did not want, just didn't look durable). Steve asked me about colors and materials, and our budget. I told him a figure actually more than we would spend at one of the big stores, but like I said, it's important to us that we support more local and family-owned businesses. We're trying to be good Americans, you know? It's hard making a living. He made some calls, trying to contact some distributors about specials he gets. Anyway, my spouse had an unexpected phone call come in, so while he stepped away, I tried talking baseball with Steve. He was wearing a Yankees shirt, but I asked if he'd seen Ohtani's big 50-50 game. "I hate him. I don't watch him." I asked why, but mostly the reply was that Steve just hated him. I took a guess and asked if it was because Ohtani was from another country. "No, I'm not a racist!" I clarified that I didn't mean because of race, because there are people of different races in THIS country, just that Ohtani is not from the U.S. "You know the have to send a big chunk of the money they make here back to Japan!" Well, yeah, but we have to pay income taxes, too, or we're supposed to, anyway. Finally, I said, "You gotta admit, the man has talent." Steve said, rather angrily, that Ohtani should have been thrown out of baseball for gambling. (FYI, Ohtani was cleared by multiple investigations; the money was stolen from him by his close associate & translator. Some of the evidence was phone calls to the bank, recorded by the bank, lying, saying he [the translator] was Ohtani and he wanted money transferred to a different account.) But Steve was not interested in evidence, because Pete Rose, who himself was caught red-handed gambling on *his own team while he was managing*, had been thrown out. "Pete Rose was the best player ever in the game." Okay. "Come on, I don't want to argue about baseball. I just wondered what you thought." I asked about tile for the bathroom, and Steve showed me some, but no talk of prices. I don't know how we got back to baseball, but I said that my spouse and I had chosen a team that we really liked, not either of the teams in our geographical area (Mets or Yankees). We have enjoyed watching the Cleveland Guardians for a few years now. "You mean the Indians...I believe that teams should keep the names they have." (I did not mention that most teams have gone through multiple name changes.) "Like the Redskins." "But that name is really racist." "No it's not, it's like the [he named local tribal nation]. Redskins and Indians isn't offensive." I didn't think fast enough to say that it's not Steve's skin that people named their sports team after, so he didn't get a say. But what I did say was, "Look, I'm really starting to change my mind about wanting to give you our business," AND HE KEPT GOING. We backed toward the door, and he seemed to take enjoyment out of kind of herding us out with his angry white-man spew. So I handed him back his business card and said, "Yeah, we're done here." And we left.
