The innovative surface plays similarly to real grass, with the rubbery ground a massive improvement on 'astro-turf' which was formerly used for all weather sports pitch around Britain. With pitches available for private hire, this complex features a large car park, modern changing rooms and a smart bar area with flat screen televisions and comfortable seating. Perfect for friends, work-mates and team practice sessions, Gol charges competitive rates for hourly hire of its pitches. Gol also provide leagues on every day of the week, with most days having 4 or even 5 divisions of teams. All matches are officiated, with results and fixtures updated on the efficient website. A very good centre for those looking to pay 5-a-side football on a regular basis, as well as for those needing pitches for one-off hire.

Since then it has opened a second centre in Newport and both have floodlit outdoor 5-a-side courts and a 7-a-side pitch and a clubhouse with changing rooms, hot showers and a licensed bar showing live matches on LCD and High Definition screens. There's also plenty of car parking available on site. The pitches use special rubber crumb infill, which makes them look and feel like natural turf but without the problem of getting waterlogged when it's been raining heavily - or getting rutted when the weather is too dry. It's a completely different story to astro-turf. It's popular with works / corporate teams and other teams who can book the pitches, or individuals can join the centre's own leagues to play if they are not already in a team. Most players use the centre on a weekly basis by playing in league games or as part of a block booking, although they do also have some courts which can be booked week-by-week as a one-off.

There's no notable bar to speak of, but there's a big a field with a full-sized football pitch on which I've never used. I mainly come here to play 5-a-side, as they have a floodlit court which contains three (fairly big, you can play up to 8-a-side on each) astroturf pitches. There's no league here (as far as I know), it's just for private hire, and pretty reasonable at £41.50 a pitch for an hour. You can also occasionally get away with stretching onto two pitches for the price of one if you have too many players without them noticing (though don't tell them I told you!). One word of warning: you may want to get any budding Ade Akinbiyis to shoot towards the car park as there's a rather savage wood behind the fence at the other end which has seen the end of many a Mitre Delta in its prime.

I was more interested in looking at the men's legs than the actual area but from what I remember (when I wasn't swooning) was the immense size of the place - an entire football pitch and running circuit, as well as a small seating area for supporting fans. I'm not sure why its called Golden Hill but it sure is a good place to sit and watch out for the next Golden Balls!

First-Hand Experience: More info about my personal experience at this stadium - As an Oxford United fan, I've been to the County Ground too many times. They are our main rivals. Each time, I was subjected to horrible abuse because I was wearing yellow. I actually - not kidding - had a condom full of piss thrown at me right outside the ground. These fans take their rivalry to an ugly level and even if I loved the team, this stadium is not a particularly great one... a little run down, with unfriendly stewards. I was most recently here in 2011, and things have not changed a bit. I've been to most UK & US stadiums, due to lifelong obsessions with travel, sport & especially footy (soccer to Americans). Born & raised in England, I followed Oxford United (hometown team) to stadia all over the country at away games, and later Liverpool (fave team) around. Every stadium review - like all my reviews - are from first-hand personal experience, usually from several visits. In 2011, I was on music tour in the UK, and visited most stadiums for fun in my spare time. As recently as Fall 2014, when I was "stuck" in UK for 3 months, I went to hundreds yet again while travelling. I have pictures of me at most, which I'll post later. Also, when back in UK I'll take more pix, and add more stadia! *** return to regular review *** It's not a great stadium at all, with wide open corners and only 15k spots for people. It's hard to believe it was once a Premier League stadium with Glenn Hoddle as manager. It just looks like a typical old stadium but you'd think that Swindon could do a lot better than this, to be honest. But what can you expect from a city that puts a ton of roundabouts within roundabouts. One good thing is that it's in the middle of houses, which I do like.
