Welshie and I went here for a meal, and while it was good, it was also overpriced. It appears there aren't a lot of mid-range priced places to eat in the U.K., it's either "cheap as chips" or straight-up expensive. We could have had a much more o-face-inducing meal out at the Griffin for the amount we spent at the Priory.
The dining room has nice ambiance, cozy and roomy at the same time. You order your meal up at a counter backed by chalk boards, in front the glass cases display all the meat and seafood available to order. They did have a well-priced special for about £17, but we wanted other options. I ordered the rack of lamb and Welshie went for whole sea bass.
Dishes are accompanied with a choice of potato; we both went with chips at the counterman's recommendation. The sea bass was indeed huge--he couldn't finish it, which is saying a lot--and the lamb was succulent. They only brought one order of chips--not sure if they forgot or combined ours into one dish. Overall, good food.
My main gripe is the cost. We didn't have any booze, just diet coke. Our bill somehow turned out to be £90+. Upon closer inspection, the sea bass was nearly £25 although it was advertised on the chalkboard for a lot less. Welshie asked for it off-the-bone, so perhaps there was an up-charge for that service, but it was never mentioned.
In the States, a $100+ meal for two would involve much more than some meat and french fries. The Priory should consider including at least a salad or cocktail with meals to offset the pocketbook pain. read more
