Half a century ago, the Princess Leilani condominium was going to be a landmark, high-end luxury condo located only a few blocks away from the largest shopping mall, Ala Moana shopping center. It featured a pool, sauna, recreation room with ping pong and billiards, a play area and gym room. It even had an intercom system with closed circuit TV so you could buzz in visitors from the comfort of your home. 50 years ago this was fantastic stuff.
My grandparents and parents were original owners in this building. A few years ago I inherited a unit and did a total renovation. It's really hard to beat the convenience of its location directly across the street from Don Quixote, a block and a half away from Walmart / Sam's Club and only a few blocks away from the mall. Also because it's an older unit, the bedrooms are huge by comparison to the new ones. Some new units you can barely fit a queen size bed and a nightstand but I can fit a California king bad with a nightstand and desk along a wall in the master and second bedrooms.
All units have central air conditioning and because it's mostly owner occupant, maintenance fees are relatively low based on the size of the unit. A lifelong friend recently purchased a two bedroom two bathroom unit for half a million, quite affordable by Hawaii standards. Definitely worth a look if you're in the market. read more
