It pains me to write this negative review, but after several attempts to resolve the issue with Pak's Academy and trying to reach Master Kyo, and having no luck. I feel like sharing our experience is the only thing I can do. I had high hopes and am disappointed with how Pak's treated a potential member/family. Pak's advertised a trial (see attached photo) which we completed. I signed up my 4-year-old little girl! When we signed her up and paid, we chatted with the manager (Vanessa) about the trial how it worked, and the uniform my daughter would receive for doing the trial (again see photo attached). At the end of the trial, we were quoted a certain price since we started our trial in 2022. Once again, we asked about the uniform at which point Vanessa said they are not offering the uniform anymore. I didn't have the flyer on me, so we left the issue alone. I emailed Vanessa letting her know we want to sign up but would like to speak with the Master about the mistake around the uniform. Vanessa said she is the only person that speaks with families because the owner (Master Kyo) does not speak English. I've seen Master Kyo speak English and I come from a bilingual family. I said I don't think he and I will have an issue communicating. I'd love a call from him, please. Vanessa said she does not want to dwell on the uniform conversation anymore and the price for membership for us has now gone up "if we want to sign up". I feel disappointed and lied to and disrespected. Also, since Vanessa never passed on my request to the Master I have yet to speak with him. I have a great review about Amaron Vang (one of the instructors), which I also asked Vanessa to pass on, and I'm sure she didn't. If I had any constructive criticism. It would be don't lie or be deceitful with customers. I hope Master Kyo realizes how his business is being run before it's too late. The way Vanessa is running Pak's Academy in Lee Summit gives them a bad name.

Master Hwang instructs each class and demonstrates the kicks

Master Hwang was referred to us by my son's Grandmaster in CA (Grandmaster Min was great about ensuring a smooth transfer.) Master Hwang was extremely responsive to my husband's email questions prior to our first meeting, and stayed very communicative since, which we deeply appreciate. My son has taken lessons for about 1 month and loves it! The classes are separated by color (two colors usually in one class time) and the class covers a lot: an energetic warmup (with music) and fun drills, self defense technique, sparring (sometimes no-contact, sometimes contact with padding) and of course form and kicks and blocking. The classes are full and popular. The dojong is large enough to accommodate and because it is so well organized (usually 2-3 instructors assist Master Hwang) the students get plenty of attention. The exercises are taught by Master Hwang who demonstrates kicks and form often; he clearly loves teaching and the students learn directly from the best. So glad my son is here!

I am an experienced taekwondo player with over 9 years of experience. I placed as state champion and top #5 in the country multiple times in Mexico. Still, they treated me as if I was a beginner - saying my technique wasn't good. Furthermore, they made me spar a white belt who was way taller, older and heavier than me (I'm a girl), before I was able to purchase updated gear. So, all I had was my headgear and chest plate - definitely wasn't a fair fight and could have been dangerous. Also, I bought gear from them and it took more than a month to arrive. Every time I tried to contact with them, they ignored me until I went to the establishment and still they were disrespectful and demeaning. My host parent was so upset about the way I was being treated, they intervened and told the Pruters not to talk to a minor like that. If you're considering this studio, my advice is to be careful and think twice before trying this school.

The other classes may be more ideal for older kids but I would not recommend the class for 3 and 4 year-olds. We signed up my 3 year-old through the LS Parks & Rec for a Intro to Martial arts class with Pruter's. I was excited for him to begin, because he loves martial art shows, like Kung Fu Panda and Power Rangers, plus he pretend plays by copying the moves from these shows. Unfortunately, our excitement was extinguished because we had a bad experience. 1. The class was too crowded with not enough instructors. When we began, the class was large but they had enough instructors to maintain the class. They would begin with a drill for the entire group, then split off into smaller groups (about 2 -3 an instructor). After the first few classes, they did not do this, which made it more difficult for each kid, since they did not get the attention needed. 2. Master Pruter talked too much about points and tournaments for half the class. The last class my son attended, which made my decision to remove him, was when Master Pruter talked for half the class on how to get points through Tae Kwon Do Tournaments. This, in my opinion, is not appropiate for 3 and 4 year olds because they do not understand, have the patience, or should even be considering tournaments. This class should be to teach them the basics, based on fun drills to keep them interested, not how to win a tournament. 3. No discipline. Martial Arts is about discipline but none was given at Pruter's. The first class they asked parents not to intervene because they are capable of disciplining our children. That did not happen. They let the kids reek havoc, where I had to intervene to discipline my own son because they would not stop him from acting up. 4. No time between classes. Because the classes where scheduled one after the other, they ran into each other. They needed at least 5 - 10 minutes between classes, like every other Tae Kwon Do place does. No time to talk to the Master, pay for classes because another class was starting up. My husband is a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and was appalled by how disorganized this place was...most of the instructors were not black belts or trained. They had kids, 10 year olds who were black belts, instructing, which I did not think was appropriate either.

I came to class and told Master Lee that I could no longer move. He smiled and said: "DAHH-VEE... You Pain TOO EASY!!" Then kicked my rear back onto the mat for daily 4 hour training. That was 31 years ago. TO THIS DAY I can still bend over and place both hands flat on the ground in front of me, touching my face to my knees. Master Lee's training stays with you a lifetime. Graduate School interrupted my training and I never continued. But I made sure all 3 of my sons trained until Black Belt. My littlest, 10 yrs old just received his black belt this April. He actually removed the AKTA patch from my 1984 Uniform and wore it on his during his Black Belt test. Now, all 3 of them are kicking my injured hamstring saying: "DAHH-DEE... You Pain TOO EASY!!!!"
