There is a reason you won´t find a negative review about this place anywhere on the internet…read more Brazil Academy is a rare gym in a city full of McDojos that are more interested in your money than teaching you actual self defense skills, and the environment is extraordinarily family friendly and in fact quite family-oriented. Brazilian Jujitsu is probably their most popular offering, but I spent the last year learning Muay Thai here and although I am not currently attending classes here, the experience was life changing! You will get the opportunity to take part in actual sparring, which are tons of fun and will give you loads of confidence in your daily life and in your ability to defend yourself in real life situations. Try a week of classes for free and see for yourself...Brazil Academy and its staff and instructors are outstanding!

The Brazilian Academy has a very in depth Gi Jiu Jitsu program that has become invaluable to me as I develop in the sport. In the KC area, there are two places that I would recommend for BJJ training. I can't pick which one I like best, so I switch between them in rotation! If you are looking for solid BJJ training, then go here. My only complaint is that they do not advertise their programs and schedules well enough to promote everything that they teach! I would have found this place sooner if they did. Why BJJ? I am glad you asked, because now I get to ramble into how it has changed my life, and how I stumbled onto the Brazilian Academy. I got into BJJ two years ago because I stopped kickboxing and gained a ton of weight. I needed something I could do in my passion for martial arts that wouldn't give me CTE. I remembered how much hard work it was to earn a green belt in Judo back in the 1980s, so I found a school where I was working at the time that taught BJJ. I found that I had been missing this in my life! I was foolish to avoid the ground game until my 50s, but I chalk that up to the brainwashing of "stand and fight like a man" that old school Karate fighters pushed at you before the rise of UFC. I lost 75 pounds in the first year, and many of the "old guy" aches and pains have gone away. My flexibility is slowing returning, and every aspect of my life from chasing my grand kids around tunnels and trampolines to running through airports to catch a flight to hiking trails at altitude in Colorado has gotten easier and better! Since I started, I have been to 10 or 11 different BJJ schools around the country. I choose BJJ schools that also have a boxing program (for fitness and fun), but shy away from contact fighting. I collect knowledge, branded Gis (uniforms), and will likely never be promoted because I move jobs and change schools just before I might earn it. I continue to travel, and will continue to find a school in the next city I visit. However, when I am at home in the KC area, I want to train as hard as possible. I need a place with Boxing and BJJ, of course, and I found one that pushed the old school tenants that I am used to. Life was beautiful, util I ended up getting a serious illness that put me down for a while. To get back up, I looked for a fundamentals class that would be a little easier on my old body and new inhaler. I tried a few other places in town, and that is when I came across the Brazilian Academy. The class schedule is awesome with two morning BJJ classes starting at 6am, and 2 evening classes every day except Friday. I started with the morning class, because it was very small, and thus easier for me to recover. Since then, I take both morning and evening classes, then drive to the other school for their evening class. I seriously don't like either one better than the other, but the Brazilian Academy is the only one with a 6am and 7am class. I think training here is going to be an essential part of my competitive game (if an old rusty fellow like me can be competitive). I'd be in complete heaven if both the schools I love decided to move in next to each other... and further south closer to my house...

I decided to send the email and Sensei Travis decided to reply near immediately and ask if I wanted to come in a do a demo class and see how I like everything. I took the information and signed up a week later. After going through the 8 basic classes, I was presented with a choice of a monthly membership or a one time payment to go after a green, brown, or black belt. It was a tough decision because I knew it was a long term commitment but also knew I wanted this to be something I commit to and learn to the best of my ability. Hindsight, this has been one of the best decisions I have made and every class I go to proves just how special this place is. Not only are Travis and the other members some of the best people to learn from, but they teach techniques that one may not find at a cookie cutter martial arts place. This place is the real deal and I encourage anyone thinking of their new place to learn how to defend themselves, give Kenukan a look. This is truly one of the most unique places and I have learned so much even just within 1 year of going.

The place is legit. If you train here, you will come away with skills and knowledge that you can use for matches, tournaments, or just to wrestle your kids away from the TV remote. In my quest to continue to improve my own health, I needed a place where I could continue to regain my knowledge in boxing and to increase my knowledge of Jiu Jitsu. I wanted a single roof to work out with back to back classes, and looked all over before finding this place almost by accident. It's a bit of a drive for me, but well worth it on the weeks that I am not traveling out of state. I train in a similar place in New York and before that in Chapel Hill, NC. Before I found Chute Boxe, I simply didn't know of any good cross discipline places to train in the KC area. Chute Boxe is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but it is not your typical Gracie academy. You can do some research into the history of the two. In the short time that I have been training in Jiu Jitsu, I have had the pleasure of training in several different formats. These Chute Boxe classes focus on technique that seriously improves my understanding of what to do when I'm stuck. Each class also goes right into rolling, which is where you will kill those carbs and hopefully solidify your knowledge. The fitness and the technical boxing classes are done with bags. I have not seen any sparing yet, but that is perfectly fine with me. My arms are past dead after every class, which is my goal. I don't want to have gas in the tank when I leave! The kids classes look both fun and like serious work. I have a two year old that will fit that energy nicely, and I can't wait until she is ready to hit the mat! There are fundamentals classes and also Muay Thai classes, but I have not taken those. I assume they are as high quality as the classes later in the evening. I have so far to go before I am in any kind of good shape, and the 2 and a half hours I spend here is exactly what I need to completely remind me of just how far that really is!
