I can guarantee I would have been miserable at this bar without an indoor smoking ban, but with a ban, the place was very enjoyable. Inexpensive drinks, bunch of locals, and a jukebox playing classic rock. I enjoyed my trip much more since my mom was buying and I saw some people I had known from childhood. Good times to be had by all.

I'm not saying it is a dirty place, but it certainly appears that way. The ceiling tiles I suspect were installed sometime in the '80s as it looks a little bit newer than the dark wood paneling on the walls, both of which showcase an authentic patina and give you that "If I sit anywhere I'm probably going to stick to it." feeling. The men's room is the second cleanest place you can be, that is until a few locals get well lubricated and ignore common bathroom etiquette and from what it looked like, several blind men operating fire hoses had ventured in the men's room before me. The women's room was much nicer...it's as if there is an unspoken ban on blind men with firehoses in their bathroom. It was a lively place on a Wednesday night with the hardworking folks packing the place with laughs, darts and familiar vulgarities being shared amongst the patrons. Having not stayed long enough to know it may be unfair to call it a sausage fest, who knows, an entire squad of women looking for middle to upper middle aged out of shape drunk men could have showed up just after I left.... The beer was cold and when I got my check I had to ask the bartender if it was correct, several pints had been poured between two people and the tab barely nosed over $13. So there's apparently a pretty sweet draft special being offered on Wednesday!!! The service was especially efficient. So efficient in fact, that at one point I witnessed a patron walk behind the bar to fill up a pitcher for someone else. So if the bartender is getting behind, no worries, your fellow man has your back! There is also an odd array of dollar bills crudely stuck together in a collage of green bills and black marker scribbled names affixed behind the bar. I quite literally have no clue what That is about but next time I come in I may just have to pay the dollar to have my name permanently added to this oddity of a landmark. On your way out don't forget to grab some package from the LIQUOR STORE THAT IS HOOKED DIRECTLY TO THE BAR!!! The only thing that could make this place better is if they had a drive through window! Is this place for everybody? Likely not, but if you want a place to go to hang your hat and chat with some friendly fun loving folks, this is the place for you!

We stopped in on a Saturday since we had a Groupon tasting coupon. We did a tasting of their Vodka,Gin,Agave and Whiskey. The Vodka was very smooth as well was the Gin. The botanicals used in their Gin made it delicious. I'm not a fan of Gin but I liked this one so much I purchased a bottle to go. I didn't try their Agave but my wife loved it with a lime wedge. I have had their Whiskey before and it is very good..95 proof. They will release their first Bourbon in November.I can't wait to try it. They offer a nice selection of crafted cocktails but not food options. Their is a nice Bistro tho across the street. Prairie On State (unfortunately abbreviated as POS on their Facebook page) is the newer location…read morefor Prairie State Winery in Genoa. Having previously visited (and enjoyed) their other location, I was thrilled to see one opening in the more-accessible Sycamore. I am by no means a wine connoisseur; this is probably made clear by the fact that my favorite wines are always sweet. Luckily, POS caters to my tastes (and others as well). I have yet to dislike any of the sweet wines I have tried there. POS is the perfect place to come and check out different choices as well; you get a few free samples before you have to choose or pay for a full tasting. POS also offers a wine club, which allows you to receive a four-times-a-year selection of dry/semi-dry, sweet/semi-sweet, or mixed wines. While the prices vary a bit each time, they are reasonable at no more than $15 a bottle (and usually less than that). Another great innovation of both POS and Priarie State Winery is their Wine Downs--Friday-night events with wine and live music. These events are very popular and a great time to relax at the end of a long week. However, this is also the one area where I would rate POS as a 4/5 rather than 5/5. POS has minimal food options (bread, cheese and crackers are about it) and an early closing time (8 p.m. latest). This causes problems for anyone who wants to attend the Wine Downs because 1) there are few relevant restaurants nearby from which to bring in food (Mexican food and bar food are not the best wine pairings), 2) the store closes early enough that it is difficult to eat and get to spend much time relaxing, and 3) if you went out to dinner and then arrived at the Wine Down, you would not find a seat. Prairie on State is an excellent local winery option well worth checking out. If they could adjust their hours to stay open a little later and offer a few simple food options (basic pasta, paninis, or pizza options), they would be the perfect weekly hangout. As is? Still worth the visit--and the club.
