So, this is a 3.25 star review, but we don't really roll that granular on yelp…read more The good: Most sports are shown and catered for, at least with a request, so you can usually catch international rugby and league football there. The bar is reasonably priced. Several projectors in the bar. The bad: The food is pretty underwhelming. The sports frequently don't overlap but the slow speed of swapping channels means you often miss the start of a match watching ads after the end of another. The acoustics mean that combining a lip sync battle and a Six Nations match created an unholy and unfortunate caterwauling effect. The ugly: The toilets. Overall it is likely the best place for sports in town, but otherwise not a lot going for it.

The Food was tasteless sadly , we were both hungry but both said how poor the meal was . I was…read morereally looking forward to to cajun chicken. There was no flavour at all which made a £16 meal very expensive each ,plus drinks the food was really poor. I had a pepper corn sauce thank goodness this gave some sort of flavour to be able to eat some while we were hungry. Not a good experience though sadly.

We noticed that the Old Stag had re opened so decided to go in, on entering it looked like a Bangkok hotel foyer which concerned us as our kids can be a bit unruly & rowdy. On arrival there were indeed plenty of staff ready to pounce which made my wife feel quite uncomfortable, we decided to stay and initially ordered drinks from the very smart bar. We chose our meals from a quite impressive & varied menu; it was fairly top end price wise but by the descriptions seemed well worth it. Major disappointment when the food eventually arrived my steak & ale pie was nothing more than a bowl of microwave meat with a pathetic piece of puff pastry dropped on top which didn't even fit the bowl; this was accompanied by some under cooked frozen chips. My wife had a very poor fish n chips & the kids had their usual junk which they were quite happy with. Big surprise when paying though, for example the two glasses of red wine my wife had came to just shy of fourteen quid my two pints of unheard of lager 10p shy of a tenner. My steak & ale pie which sounded wonderful on the menu £10.95 & was not worth half that. By contrast last Friday we went to Weatherspoons not the most upmarket place in town but with the kids it is fine. My wife & I had Cod, chips, peas with drink included I had a pint she had wine £5.99 each! (That's right my wife's meal & wine combined was about a quid cheaper than the wine alone at the Stag) it was better fish and chips by far than that at the Stag too.I or I should say we like to eat out & do not mind paying for good food however we do not like to be ripped off by paying good money for food that is quite frankly not fit for purpose. To add insult to injury the Stag advertises out side that they consider their food to be fine dining I think trading standards should look at that.To sum up Nice surroundings greedy owners Dave
