The past too many to count years Ive been going to James at George St, Ive never had a bad cut from him so never felt the need to try other stylists. I am pretty bad at styling my hair but with his cuts it kind of styles itself and I can always maintain the style afterwards. He is frank and honest, he is friendly but doesn't butter you up with false niceties. I like that I can tell him what I would like and he tells me straight whether it will work or not, he comes up with suggestions for different things to try if he thinks I might have had the same style for too long. He often has to do repair jobs as I have lived in the US for 6 years and have yet to find a decent hairdresser here. On every trip home, pretty soon after I land back in Edinburgh I'm at the salon. I think the prices are good but it can work out to be a pretty expensive cut when you figure in plane fares etc! I occasionally get my hair coloured, again have always been very happy with the outcome, he is good at knowing what suits me. The salon itself can be noisy when its busy, but gives off a pleasant lively vibe. There have only been a couple of times when Ive experienced a stuck up attitude from staff, mostly they are polite and professionally friendly. Even though I am a bit of a plain non-trendy unfashionable person, I've never felt uncomfortable there.

You can always tell the difference between the abilities of hairdressers because of instead of doing generic cuts that vaguely suit all hair types, it seems this man understands that one bob doesn't fit all. If you've got a lot of time on your hands (to take into consideration the wandering off and disappearing while he's cutting your hair) I reckon it's one of the most superior places in Edinburgh.

Since we were on a vacation, my husband accompanied too and he was offered tea while he was waiting. :) I desperately needed to style my ultra-straight hair into light curls. The young lady (Trainee) did an exceptionally good job! She first washed my hair with a lot of care, blow dried and then curled them with a curling iron. She gave me the look, I always yearned for and never really achieved in any of the hair salons in my country!! And all these for £12 only. I couldn't be happier!!! Thanks to a cancellation, I was able to be seen to within 2 minutes of walking in. I had my hair washed and massaged by Maxine, who was very sweet and personable. Karen, who I assume is a senior stylist, saw to my hair. She was a dream of a hairdresser, let me tell you. She really listened to what I was describing and ACTUALLY PULLED IT OFF! I have a WONDERFUL cut that I'm THRILLED about, plus I bought a leave-in conditioner I'm pumped about using. In all my haircutting days, no stylist *EVER* talked me through a cut. Karen would explain what she was doing and, informally, ask if that was ok with me before she did anything "drastic". Uh, YEAH! And I nearly fell out of the seat when she said, "You know your hair better than I do." I thought that all stylists assumed they knew more than us, lowly others, so that's why our haircuts looked *nothing* like we asked for in the first place. I had a lovely experience at Cheynes and I've already made my follow-up appointment. I had to give them 4 stars because the price was a bit steep (£50) and came as a surprise when I was paying, but I would have been fine if I was forewarned.

When I left Hair by JFK I felt happy and that is how it should be. The staff were nice and friendly and I didn't have to participate in the same old where are you going on holiday conversation. They listened to what I wanted done with my hair (I feel this is a big problem in most hairdressers) and created exactly what I had imagined. I would definitely recommend this salon if you are wanting any technical colouring or a hair cut that is different than the 'fashion' at the time. Although it's more than you would pay at other salons it is worth it for the end result and the student discount helps to make it affordable. I will be going back.

The salon is always buzzing when you go in and even when I'm just waiting to pick them up, I always get offered tea, coffee or wine. All the staff are so friendly and nice and the hairstyles that are created are young and fresh. The staff and salon have won shedloads of awards. There are plenty of refreshments available, and you can even enjoy a glass of delicious prosecco while you get your hair done. I always have Tammy do my hair with copper highlights every few months or so, and I couldn't be more grateful. I've had so many bad experiences in the past with other hairdressers, but she works with you to create exactly what you imagined. Always come away feeling like a million dollars. I had the choice of a salon stylist or the head stylist. I went with the head stylist Neil, he was so nice. He took ages sorting my hair from a previous disastrous hair cut. It's the first time I've had my hair blow dried properly and not just blasted then straightened using GHDs. I love they way its been cut and because it was my first time going to that salon I got a voucher for 20% off my next visit within 12 weeks. I Love it, I'll defiantly be back.

So I sit there like a lemon in the chair whilst the guy first finishes up with someone else then goes and has a conversation with a number of the staff. I rarely relish a trip to the salon because of the many I've experienced they tend to be quite, how shall I put it, snobby. This place was no different although the guy really was plugging his services for the next time I had to have my hair done which he recommended was something like 4 weeks away and I "really shouldn't leave it any longer". I asked if they had any appointments today and the lady at the desk said 3:45. Perfect. Lunch, glass of wine later I walked in hoping for the best. What I got was a great haircut! Actually, just as good as my hairdresser back home. My hairdresser was Amy and she was super nice. I def recommend this place. It's cute, not too overwhelming and my haircut was priced perfectly. It has a laid back style and homey feeling to it- no extreme shiny surfaces or too many posters of hair models draping the walls. If you are getting hair dyed you can hang out on their comfy couches with coffee/tea. I have had my hair cut three times here. The first two I was quite pleased with , the last was ok- I only ever get a trim so nothing too drastic was required but somehow it wasn't a great cut. They do have a student deal and offer services of head massage , manicure/pedicure and other massages. Prices can vary depending on the service- probably the most relaxing hair wash I have ever had, but careful on offers for head massage etc as this will be added to your bill in the end and lead to a possible unpleasant suprise. Other than that, lovely atmosphere! Book in advance is advisable, although twice they have managed to fit me in when I dropped by.
