Being the type of girl who travels to Scotland on a regular basis, over the years, I have been stuck in Preston railway station too many times to count. As a result, I've developed a pretty virulent dislike of it. Mainly because it's cold. And frequently wet. And it smells. And it doesn't have a proper cafe, so you're forced to sit in the rather dire sandwich shop that's affixed to the bar, or sit in a rather dreary branch of Burger King.
It's sad really. Preston appears to be desperate to reinvent itself as a forward thinking 'new' city and yet doesn't appear to have the public transport hubs to back up this spirit of reinvention and regeneration. Seeing as it's such a busy station, with so many people passing through it to change onto the West Coast Main Line, you'd think that someone would give it a bit of a lick of paint at the very least.
Yet, I know that the next time I have to change trains at Preston, it will look exactly the same as it's done for the past ten years. Cold, grey and thoroughly miserable. If you're staying here for more than ten minutes, I suggest that at the very least you take a book - although sticking a hipflask of something strong and alcoholic in your bag probably isn't a bad idea either. read more
