We saw a very similar review to this one, which motivated us to chime in as it seems it is not just us. We hope this review will help other parents who are considering this place for their toddler. We had a surprisingly terrible experience at this salon trying to get a simple cut for our 2-year-old. We chose this place specifically because it was so highly rated for child haircuts, and we figured the relatively expensive price would be offset by a more child-friendly experience. This could not have been more wrong. We arrived early on a quiet weekend morning. The stylist was incredibly rude from the offset. He seemed pretty bothered by our presence. My husband and I kept staring at each other like "is it just me?". We asked a few questions to get his opinion on how to handle the haircut and he was unfriendly and unwilling to engage in his responses. When our 2 year old got upset by the water on his hair (typical, but also navigateable with a little friendly encouragement towards the child) -- he refused to look at or speak to our child, instead relented and essentially said we have to put up with it. We kept trying to slow things down or to just get his sense of how to navigate. We kept mistakenly thinking he'd be helpful, as someone in a salon that specializes in children's cuts. Unfortunately this did not happen. The tone was profoundly passive-aggressive, put-upon, and unhelpful. We decided to reschedule and were met with a similarly rude energy from the front desk. We tend to be pretty easygoing when it comes to children's experiences, which can inherently be a bit unpredictable. We have never had to leave because we were so uncomfortable with how a professional was treating our child. It was that bad. read more

Review is for a cut with Daisy. TLDR: Cut was fine but a shorter than we wanted, and the stylist was incredibly rude & had very little patience or understanding. Told my mom chat about the experience and another mom guessed which stylist it was based on having a very similar experience with Daisy in the past. Long version: Took my son to Prep today for his first haircut. His father and I didn't want much cut off, but he had a few very long scraggly strands and a bit of a rat's tail and I didn't trust myself to trim it and get it right. I messaged the salon ahead of time and warned them that he's 21mo, it was his first cut, and that he may be upset & specifically stated I wanted to warn them about that. They said that was fine and offered for us to come a bit early so he could get comfortable. Got there, he was immediately wary but calmed down with the iPad and a cartoon. Great! Told the hairdresser what we wanted and that I really didn't want much cut off at all and my preference was for less than she'd normally do. She said that was fine, and she'd generally take off 1/2 an inch and in some areas she'd cut more since it was his first cut and the length was very uneven. I said great, but I wanted 1/4 inch as the baseline and understood that some strands definitely needed more than that. My son has beautiful big curls/waves and we wanted to keep as much of that as possible. She starts, he's a bit uncomfortable but focuses on the iPad (thank god for screens when you need them) and is generally doing ok. Yay! At one point I tell her I like the length at the back and don't want more trimmed. She moves to sides. Maybe 3-4 mins later she goes back and is taking more off the back and I told her again I didn't want it any shorter again. I didn't say it rudely, raise my voice, or have any sort of mean tone. I just made the request I had clearly stated from the start. She steps back and huffs and says "I can't work like this!" She proceeds to go on a tirade about how she told me she had to even out his hair so it could grow out properly, and kept saying she can't work like this. I assume the "like this" meant with a parent giving her feedback on the cut. Then she proceeds to SOLELY address my husband as if I was crazy & unreasonable and he was the reasonable man who would set me straight. Also added "and on top of it he's a difficult child and he's constantly moving!" Like... yeah duh? He's not even 2? And I even warned the salon he was likely to be upset! I ended up in tears - she made me feel terrible and I basically told her as much and stepped outside to compose myself. I go back in, and she begrudgingly finishes the cut with a terrible attitude, without any apologies, and then leaves in a huff at the end. She ruined our experience of our son's first haircut - and that's something we'll never get back. I was already emotional at the idea of cutting it, and she really made the experience awful. If a children's stylist isn't used to parents being a bit uneasy for a first time cut, getting feedback on length, or a child that moves and isn't happy to be getting a cut - then frankly she isn't in the right role. Also - giving a hair stylist feedback on length is an incredibly common & normal thing to do! The bare minimum she could have done was given us the feedback with a calm and professional attitude and offered to have a different stylist finish the cut. Instead she made a rude scene. I was incredibly upset and gave feedback to the woman at the front desk (who was very kind) who then had the manager come speak to me. She was very apologetic but acted surprised & incredulous that Daisy could have been rude or impatient. That said, when I messaged my mom group who had recommended Prep to me sharing my experience, another mom GUESSED which stylist it was (I hadn't named her) based off of having a very similar experience with her. Both my girls went for haircuts and had vastly different experiences. One would have given it 5 stars, and the other one 2 stars, so I settled on 4. I think it really depends on what stylist you get. My girls are teenagers and perhaps this salon is better for younger kids. My 14 and 16 year old daughters went for haircuts. They both have long hair so I bought the $70 hair cuts for their age group and length which were supposed to last an hour. My younger daughter had Addi as a stylist whom she loved. She was friendly with a great personality, gave her a great cut with curtain bangs and a blowout. My older daughter had Daisy and it wasn't such a great experience. She described her being irritable, shamed her for her hair being too dry, described how much she disliked cutting long, curly hair, and said she couldn't do a blowout because she didn't have enough time, and cut her appointment short by 15 minutes to see the next client. My daughter was crying. she said she couldn't explain to her what she wanted because the stylist's English wasn't good enough to understand her. She felt shamed by the stylist about her hair and the whole thing was not a positive experience. It doesn't sound like Daisy is cut out to work with teenagers. Girls are sensitive about their looks and their hair and stylists need to be friendly and kind. The really popular stylists book up quickly, so you have to book pretty far in advance. read more

I was initially skeptical of a salon that has look books with bespoke cuts ("The Bianca") but when I thought about it, it's actually genius. Thinking back, I did the exact same thing with my preschooler's clothes ("Put on the pajama shirt.. here, put your leg into the Jordan pants"..) to speed up our pokey mornings. Yes, that makes me a genius too, who knew? For older kids like my 12 year-old who'd rather scrub out a sewer line than get his hair cut, PREP's classy decor tells him that he's getting the Royale treatment. Lyn cut my boy's hair, did a nice job and was very effective communicating with him. The PREP branded shampoo smelled like lemongrass and his hair is really shiny. And did he admit twice he actually likes his haircut. Yes ma'am, twice. They also got us in same day even though they were slammed doing back-to-school cuts, even with extended hours. Last, all kids leave with a small bag of freshly popped popcorn; that's pretty genius too. read more

First time I took my toddler to Prep, I read all the reviews and decided to pick Daisy. She was all that I expected from a salon who markets themselves as a place you can take your little people to for haircuts. She was patient and didn't rush him. She listened to what I wanted in a haircut. She gave my toddler an amazing haircut. Of course, I'm rating Daisy with 5 stars! For my toddler's 2nd cut, Daisy did not have availability for a month, so I picked another stylist expecting the same quality. Unfortunately, Amanda did not seem to have a lot of experience cutting hair for toddlers. The clipper she was using made him uncomfortable and was loud. My brother in law asked if she could use scissors but she said she didn't want to use scissors because she was afraid of cutting him. I would not recommend her for your toddler. I wish Prep would post profiles for their stylists, their years of experience and specialities, so it would be easier for me to choose which stylist would be right for my toddler. Because $43 + tip for a toddler haircut is expensive! I AM willing to pay this but I want a good haircut. Needless to say, for his next haircut I will be scheduling in advance with Daisy. read more

Had a consultation here for my 11 year old daughter. We were told by the stylist that my daughter's (and I quote) "texture" meant we couldn't achieve the straight hair K Pop inspired look we wanted. My daughter has 2c/3a hair.... Hell, even with my 4C hair, I've had my natural hair bone straight in the past. Though she is mixed with Black, her Asian genes are more visibly apparent in her hair due to her hair texture being more wavy/straight adjacent than curly/coils often seen with Black hair. So, I was taken aback by the stylist insisting the style wasn't possible. Another stylist attempted to help and explain to our consultation stylist that the look is indeed achievable but ultimately I lost confidence that they truly could do it. I do appreciate the other stylist trying to help her coworker understand "textured" hair but this type of education should happen BEFORE clients step in the salon.I wish I remembered her name, THANK YOU! With all that said, we ended up going to another salon that happened to also have non Black, Asian stylists and they instantly said they could do her hair and honestly SLAYED IT!!! Just stating this fact because race shouldn't be a factor when it comes to being a skilled hairstylist that can handle various "textures" of hair. So, "texture" is no excuse. I wonder if "texture" was code for something else? I'll never know because I'll never put my child in another situation at PREP to have her self esteemed is lowered. My daughter has autism and hadn't received a professional haircut due to her sensory sensitivities. I took my time to select a salon in SF that could accommodate her needs. Daisy was extremely patient with her and performed a miracle! Ella also assisted to help speed up the process. They both were so kind and encouraging to my daughter. It meant a lot. The salon carries amazing products that I bought as well to maintain her hair at home. My daughter that used to refuse to brush her hair allowed me to brush her hair this morning with a cute unicorn plush Wet Brush we also bought from the salon. Decided to try this place as they advertise for kids. It had a great atmosphere and really nice staff. The team seemed to know how to work with a wriggly toddler. However, the overall haircut was inferior to the one he's been getting at Kids Cuts - asymmetrical and choppy, and we had to fix some pieces on our own later. You could argue that it's hard to cut hair for toddlers, but this kid had TV on and he was impressively still. Ultimately, it's almost double what others charge for kids this age, and not that much better. read more

First time taking my 9 year old daughter to Prep salon as she has outgrown the mediocre cuts at other kid salons or Supercuts, and was overdue for a cut after 7 months! My current stylist recommended Prep for teens or tweens who desire a stylish cut at a kid-friendly spot. Maricela did a chin length bob with long layers and texturizing to help with her thick hair. Her techniques were the same I've had done on my hair by very experienced stylists. The cut is fantastic. Price is higher than I normally would go for, but it was a great value for a fabulous cut and style. Easy to book and pay online and great COVID safety policies. Took about 40 minutes since we skipped the shampoo at the start, but this included the blow dry. My kid got to choose a show to watch on an iPad during the cut, which kept her head still and her mind entertained. After it was done, my kid exclaimed, "I love it! This place was recommended by a few parents from our daycare and we loved that it's a kids salon, so people working there know how to work with kids 2+ y/o. We had an appointment for our son's first haircut on Saturday. The male hairdresser had bad manners, wasn't friendly or listened of what we wanted for haircut to look like. After leaving and paying $53 total, we had to come back the next day to fix it, because it looked like our son needs a haircut and not like he just had one. During the second appointment, the same hairdresser was visibly annoyed with us being back. He still didn't do his best to fix the situation.
