There is a restaurant in the hotel but there are a LOT of restaurants within walking distance. We had asked for a room with two beds thinking they would be single beds. (Our last experience with hotels in Europe was not a great one. We had a tiny room and a tiny bed,) When we got our room it was bigger than we expected. It had two beds-one was a king and the other a queen. What a nice surprise! There is no air conditioning in most hotels in Europe. With the windows open and a fan I was quite comfortable because the temp was around 60° the three nights we were there. The hubby who likes it much colder said it was bearable. The staff was friendly. The hotel was clean. I don't remember if breakfast is included in the price. There is a buffet breakfast or you can order off the menu. The last morning I ordered the smoked salmon, poached eggs, and sourdough toast off the hot menu. It was delicious. Had to have smoked salmon before I left Scotland...wish I would have ordered it sooner. Yummy. Would have given it 4 stars but with the lack of ac and having to climb several sets of stairs before you get to the elevator I'm giving it 3 stars. In all fairness, on occasion I did use the hotel ramp to get into or leave the hotel but that entailed walking through the rain. It did, however, lead you directly to the elevator.

Owned by Sir Rocco Forte since 1997, the building has been completely refurbished and now enjoys a worldwide reputation as a luxury hotel. The Balmoral has been hosting royalty, celebrities, and cultural icons for 120 years, but the staff makes everyone feel special regardless who you are. We went back two days in a row because it is such a beautiful space with quality food and cocktails. The design is stylish modern classic with some of the most beautiful glassware I've seen. The cocktail menu hosts a nice variety of wonderful signature and classic recipes. I had the Nutty Professor (photo #2) which was a tasty blend of Bourbon, spiced rum, Cocchi Torino (sweet vermouth), Frangelico (hazelnut liqueur), and black walnut bitters with an orange garnish. It was so good I didn't change it up for my second. The cocktail menu is fun because of its local focus. They use fresh, locally sourced ingredients, reflecting a commitment to quality and a connection to the surrounding Scottish landscape. We loved everything about the experience for our first time visiting Scotland. The Balmoral Hotel and Bar Prince are a must when you visit beautiful Edinburgh. Go there!!! Salute

Still, the veggie options seem to have improved, although no V next to the meals makes it harder to decipher. I've just been asked if I want vegetables or chips with my vegetable stir fry. Confused. So, you are asking me if I want vegetables with my vegetables? I don't need a side dish. More veg in my veg stir fry perhaps? :-) Came back to amend the number of stars down over. The veg stir fry was literally swimming in oil and Hoi sin sauce. It's a BBQ sauce, and needed only a tiny amount to add flavour. The oil looked like olive, but a small amount of sesame oil would have been better. I think the chef may have never tried this. I couldn't finish it. A photo is attached. Shame.

Lentil soup - vegetarian and quite pleasant, if not super flavoursome. Wouldn't call it memorable. Vegetarian option for main course - a cheese basket filled with vegetables in a hoi sin sauce. Got to admit, I was a little lost at the choice, but the other options being meat, I had to get on the tasteboat and see what this would bring. Which was what it said on the tin - a cheese pastry filled with hoi sin sauce. While it wasn't horrible, I wouldn't mix that combination ever again. On the positive side, the heaviness of the meal did soak the pre-dinner alcohol up quite successfully, but boy was it heavy. Dessert of sticky toffee pudding had me reaching for the sofa, but it was sugary tasty (fine by me at the time). Waitressing - not enough servings of wine - one top up and if you didn't take advantage you had no chance. Service was pretty good- the bar never seemed to take long serving the party, and the maitre'd had the waitressing staff running round at all the right times (bar the above comment). Clearly they are used to catering for large parties. Very efficient! However, I just didn't think the food was all that impressive, so, 2 stars for quality, but goes up to 3 for service.

Once found , we were very pleased to see parking - rare in Edinburgh. The rooms were well appointed , a little small, and at first extremely noisy. We were on the first floor and could hear the clomping of guests on the exposed wood stairs. The breakfast room was also very near our door and I was thinking there was to be no sleeping - but I was wrong. Somehow , magically , the noise didn't wake us - I am a very light sleeper too. Whatever the sound dynamic was in the place - I slept very comfortably and quietly. If we were going to be spending time in our rooms , I would have found the space restrictive but for a good nights rest , it was great. The only other thing I felt was a head scratcher was the bathroom mirror. Very space age, 3-D type design that completely did not go with the decor.
