The rooms are spacious and well equipped but my 3rd floor room did not have a good bathroom. Shower was underpowered and in a very slippery bath with a shower curtain. Not ideal as shower curtains are not what I expect in a high end hotel, while the bath is pretty dangerous and I would be concerned for older guests stepping out. In addition some tiles were missing above wash basin. Breakfast consisted of hot and cold buffet and was very good. So some hits and misses but location was a winner.

We passed one other hotel on the walk over, but it was rather scary. It may have been closer, but I wouldn't have wanted to stay there. Breakfast, which in our case came with the room, was rather blah. Not much flavor, and I think the mushrooms (a requirement for an English breakfast) clearly came out of a can. Not really any made-to-order options. For England, the price was moderate. If you're converting from dollars, it's going to sting a bit, but that's the case in the entire country.

Very large desk area with long strip lights, easy to hook up the laptop to the TV for dual screen working. The breakfast buffet was quite standard, but with made-to-order Belgian waffles which was a really nice special touch. Sadly the restaurant that I was looking forward to eating at, was closed on arrival. Apparently the hours have been reduced lately due to lack of demand, which I quite understand all things considered. The receptionist was very good with nearby recommendations, including several in the new development mini-mall which is just across the bridge from the hotel.

The Colpitts is one of the nicest pubs in Durham city centre. It's located quite far out of the…read moremain pubs and bars in the city, up a hill behind the bus station, where few other pubs are located. Despite this, the pub becomes busy, especially at weekends, although it tends to attract a certain crowd, mainly students. The pub is old-fashioned in its decoration, with old carpets and wallpaper surrounding it's wooden tables with upholstered benches. The bar spans the front of the entrance, with a large lounge area to the right and a smaller area to the right, behind which is a dedicated games room, with a pool table and a darts board. The games room is a brightly painted room reminiscent of a working mens club. The best thing about this pub is the drinks - they're among the cheapest priced in Durham and their range of cocktails is brilliant, which sounds unusual for such a pub, but this is its charm. I first tried many cocktails here - such as a Pink Kangaroo (vodka, advocaat, cider and blackcurrent) and a Fluffy Ducky (vodka, advocaat and peach schnapps). My 17-year-old self didn't find these drinks as disgusting as they now seem.
