It was a HUGE relief they could help simply file for an extension, to buy time for me to find missing documents. I had a very complicated year to deal with, & still missing some documents. I'd struggled for months trying to get things straightened out on IRS.gov, with zero success. It sounds like it should be so simple online, but it's not, particularly when there were complications during the year that messed that up. Stellar said to just come to office with what I had, & talked me thru filling out the paperwork for them, & taking copies of documents I did have, to start a file for later filing. Also, that I can bring in other found records, anytime. Very nice people there helped calm my ragged nerves--offered beverages (warm day today), & allowed some chatting. That was just what I needed at that point. I did wish they gave a dated receipt or something, for my home files, showing that I did go there to file an extension on this date (last minute!), but that's not their routine--one never knows what may happen. The building they're in didn't have a street number on it--could only go by the footprint shown on the map. But each suite was well marked.

    It was our first time working with SH, we worked with Phillip Hall. He was recommended to us by a…read morefriend. We have never had issues with IRS whether we filed ourselves or through tax accountant/CPA firm, but this time we did. He filed our taxes under the incorrect SSN which from the notes on the papers returned to us I could see that the SSN was written down incorrectly. Instead of reaching out to us to clarify my husbands SSN he filed under mine. Taxes were paid on time but due to this inconsistency the funds got parked elsewhere and later we got a notification from IRS that we were late. Then we were billed late fees. At the time we had no idea what was going on and reached out to Phillip. He said he would call them but it would cost us $295 an hour. The only reason for this conundrum was his mistake and it would cost us for him to correct it??? Unethical and unprofessional. Needless to say it took us days and hours to reach IRS to correct it. Overall working with Phillip was not satisfactory. It didn't feel like we were working with a professional whose consistency and clarity we could rely on. We will not be using SH again and definitely do not recommend it.

We used them for one year on the recommendation of our previous tax advisor who moved away. Unfortunately, it was not a good year for us tax wise. We lost a long time business which was devastating in itself and then to be treated like second class citizens stung even more. During that one awful year, I was insured through the affordable care act. These accountants did not understand how to process this government issued insurance and further, they actually charged US for them to process and report it. Totally unbelievable. Plus, they were hard to get ahold of, talked down to us as clients and requested the same documents from us multiple times. When I would deliver the documents requested they would look at them and say "oh those are the same documents we already have". Hello! Do your job. Plus, they delayed doing our taxes for so long that we ended up having to pay for an extension. This delay also cost my husband the ability to claim his unemployment insurance that he had paid into for his entire working career of over 30 years which of course put us in even more dire financial straits. Thankfully, we have moved beyond all of that now, but this was a very frustrating, confusing, demeaning, experience; and so much more. We were grossly overcharged also. Since that time, on the recommendation of a good friend, we now have a wonderful accountant who treats us as friends, is respectful and knows her job inside and out. What a difference.

This year (2022), I decided that I would seek out a…read moreCPA to handle my taxes trying to think ahead for the future as far as life insurance and other services. McSwain & Company had a fairly good star rating, so I decided to meet with one of their CPA's. My initial meeting with David was at most 10 minutes. Granted he did ask me to provide all documentation for our initial meeting and I had forgot 1 or 2 pieces of documentation needed to file my tax return, so I can see how maybe he could have been a bit frustrated. I proceeded to tell him that I would like to be a new client, and would need help seeking future advice for life insurance etc in the future. While he may have been great at getting all my documentation filed for my taxes this year, he is not a very friendly CPA. I was told that my taxes had been filed, and that I needed to sign forms and make my payment even though I had already made my payment of $250, and returned the signed forms as requested. While on the phone with him, he said that I could come and pick up my return anytime. The following day my wife drives up to their office to pick up our return and was greeted with a very unfriendly secretary (I also had the same experience on my first/second day I had visited as well), being told that there is no check available for us. David should work on his people skills. He told me that I misunderstood vs telling me that he could have been unclear with his statements. Instead of taking the responsibility he pushed the blame on me. This years tax returns are done, and next year McSwain & Company will NOT receive my business. Thanks for opening your doors to a new Client, but unfortunately your representatives people skills (soft skills) are not where they need to be. This was the worst experience I have had yet in my 30 years of filing taxes. While it may have been quick, it was not worth the blame I received.
