While my colleagues have had good experiences here, mine must have been through some kind of opposite filter.
The receptionist didn't speak English and the doctor's English wasn't great either. The doctor completely misunderstood my request for care. She disregarded the symptoms I described and when I mentioned having a blood test done for a check up she began to explain that this wasn't covered by insurance.
Because it was my first time to a doctor in Germany, I must admit I wasn't aware of what was and what wasn't covered under my plan with BKK. But I knew that I wanted to have my vitals checked, so I ended up agreeing to pay for the tests.
*Note to foreigners, do not mention the words "check up" at the doctors office unless you are over the age of 35. They will make you pay for the tests.
Two weeks later I went back with a colleague of mine who speaks German, because they hadn't given me my test results yet. . . We requested those and also asked about why it was that I had to pay for my tests, even though I presented symptoms and am fully insured through my employer. The receptionist told us that the office only contacts patients about 'bad' test results. But she agreed with how unusual it was that I had to pay. After a conversation with some others in the office, she said that there had been a misunderstanding and that they would sort it out. From there, my colleague and I made the mistake of believing her when she said they would contact us about a refund. She even took my colleague's phone number in case they needed to speak German about the situation.
Three weeks after that and, no surprise, no response - so I went in alone and found a receptionist who speaks English. She informed me that it wasn't possible for their office to refund me (apparently what the previous receptionist said was a complete fabrication) and that in order for me to "maybe" get my money back, I had to physically go to BKK's office and explain the situation.
Needless to say my experience has been frustrating and left me with the feeling of being mislead. Not that they did this intentionally, but the inconsistency of explanations and offers leads me to believe they don't know what they are doing and they definitely can't follow through. I wouldn't recommend anyone, who isn't familiar with the German health care system or the language, to get care here. read more
