This is a very nice museum and grounds that include an old cabin and gardens and small botanical garden. The combination of exhibits and art was nicely curated. Of particular interest during my visit was the art installation with the gauze double helix structures and embedded photos, combined with stories on wall plaques. If you explore thoroughly you could easily spend a couple of hours here. read more

Charming small museum. Great for an hour or two. Good collection of local animals and life. Worth a visit.

This was just okay. There was an art exhibit going on when we were here. The Harrington house outside was cool to learn about the early Homer homesteading. This part is free. The museum proper costs $15 for adults if you're not a member. It has a variety of Alaskan related memorabilia, including some taxidermy of wild life. You wouldn't need more than an hour to look through things. So by that standard, I think the price was a bit high. Also a tour bus came and it became too crowded to be enjoyable. I think admission should just be $5. read more

The best small museum we have been in. The Pratt offers many visual pieces from the local areas. The stuffed animals and skeletons are perfect for the area as well as the fish and bird displays. The Pratt maintains a on going group of workshops and tours for you to join in. Worth a stop if you are interested in the area. They also offer a natural garden that identifies the many plants in the area. Did I mention the hiking trails - some level and some a little steeper - all very beautiful. I have in the past come across a moose and calf in the woods here!! read more

I honestly remember this museum being a lot bigger, or at least with more wow items. Perhaps because they had so much art, they had other displays hidden? I am unsure. Staff at the front desk was very friendly and informative, just what you want as your face of your museum. She gave us a smile and sent us on our way to the exhibits. There are interactive areas everywhere you turn, with some interesting pieces of Alaska science and history. There's a bit about the 1964 earthquake with a scrapbook, video, and a telephone where you can listen in to locals tell their story. There's also info on the different volcanic eruptions the cook inlet has seen in the last 40 years. You can look through a microscope to see the differences in the ash of each mountain/eruption. The lower level has an interactive section for crab/fishing boats where you can race the clock to get on your survival gear while the boat goes down. You can hear marine radio broadcasts. Just a lot of little tidbits that we Alaskans take for granted because, for us, we've always heard/seen them. Over all a great way to kill an hour or two. The artwork wasn't really my speed, but I don't believe that the artwork will be there permanently. Just one of their rotating exhibits? And don't just think it's an indoor attraction, there are nature trails out behind the homestead cabin. Really easy walks, and relaxing. Probably our favorite part of the visit on this trip. read more

A great local museum! Three levels with some great history of Alaska. There is an exhibit right now on the different types of whales and they have a huge whale skeleton hanging from the ceiling. You can also learn about different fishing boats, native animals, the Valdez spill and Alaska geography. Great for both kids and adults. I would set aside 1-1.5 hours. Very clean and nicely maintained. They have a parking lot. There is also a small gift shop. Admission was $8. read more

If u have time visit this museum, it's informational informative and densely packed with simple and concise exibits. Great illustrations and captions with the nature and culture of Alaska. The history of the natives and the wild is a wonder to learn about. read more

The Pratt Museum offers a historic harbor tour every Thursday and Friday in the summer at 3:00 pm. I went on the tour this afternoon with my aunt, who has lived in Homer for 40 years. Linda, the docent, proved to be a wealth of information about Homer's history, fishing industry, and economy. She peppered the whole two hours with insightful tidbits about the local characters who first established the town and its original homesteads. Linda's descriptions of Homer's past and present elaborated upon what my aunt has been telling me since I arrived. Unlike other touristy places I have visited on this trip, I know her expertise comes from years of living within the community! The tour included visits to several boats along the dock. We talked about the ins and out of fishing enterprises and the rise and fall of the industry throughout the years. The tour ended in front of -- and then inside -- Coal Point, which processes more than 10,000 pounds of fish from charters each day. Even with one of the workers listening, Linda confidently gave us the rundown of how fish are prepared, even marching us into the processing plant itself! I recommend this tour to anyone who is interested in understanding what they see when they come to Homer, visit the Spit, or go charter fishing. read more
