In Alaska, this is especially true because we are isolated and it's so important to our local economy. Furthermore, Alaska, and Homer in particular is teeming with artists. I suppose our amazingly beautiful but short summers and long, dark winters give our local artists lots of time to reflect on Alaskan beauty. I've never seen so many talented artists in one place. As such, I realize the longer I live here, to more desensitized I have become to good art. So when a particular artist catches my eye, it follows that they must be REALLY good. High Tide Arts is the home of Jens and Leslie Klaar. Jens is a talented knife maker and Leslie creates wonderful mosaics and watercolors. Leslie's work is characteristically Alaskan-themed. Her watercolors and mosaics are very different. I love the bold use of colors in her mosaics that hint at Japanese origami. Her paintings are in an entirely different style and equally fabulous. She has prints and originals for sale as well as art cards. High Tide's gallery sells art and jewelery made by many other talented Alaskan artists as well. The gallery is only open during the warm season from Memorial Day to Labor Day, but you can also order from them online. They do take credit cards as well.

A first time visit for me at this hidden gem of a private art gallery introduced me to the…read morepaintings of Norman Lowell. A friend bought an original oil painting from Norman in Anchorage, in 1967; while Norman was teaching painting, and long before he became famous. We went to the art gallery on a pleasant overcast day. The dirt road, named Norman Lowell Road is known best by locals. The road comes from the East to the Sterling Hwy immediately north of the Anchor River bridge, so it's easier to see when driving north from Homer, AK. There are signs among the woods by the highway, but they were hard for me to spot, while driving southward, without the help of my friend. Anyone who appreciates landscape vistas and scenic views will appreciate this gallery. There are some expressionistic paintings, too. We had pleasant conversations with Norman and one of his sons, who helps him with the gallery. Norman "hung up his brushes" in 2017 because of failed eyesight; however, Norman tries to be in the gallery daily. This gallery, which is free to visitors, is huge at 10,000 sq ft. The floor plan invites one to discover a new room with ever larger paintings as you make your way through the gallery. In the rooms with the largest paintings, Norman displays many sculptures and carvings by other artists behind the low wall that keeps viewers back from the paintings. So much to see and appreciate! For me, it will take another visit or two to take everything in. In the last room, where prints and a few original oils are for sale, there is a long wall with Norman's last oil paintings done in 2016; they are not for sale. The gallery's website is normanlowellgallery.net A bonus treat is to learn about how Norman and his wife homesteaded the property. Their original cabin filled with some memorabilia is open to visitors, and it is close to their present home, and the nearby gallery.

And the last time I was there the gal that waited on me was kinda rude/distracted when she waited on me. No thank you or acknowledgement of any kind. I did like that social distancing and masks are enforced in the store, which is not the norm in Homer. I've gotten a lot of cool gifts, nautical themed stuffed animals and knickknacks, and clothing here over the years. I finally scored a really nice fleece lined Salty Dawg zip up that I am practically living in these days- its luscious!

By Homer standards, the gift shop is huge and yet it's unadvertised as though it were an after-thought. Bear Country is the most well-rounded Alaska themed shop on the Homer Spit boardwalk. They have the biggest variety of average-man's Alaska made and Alaska themed gifts on the Spit. Bear Country is primarily authentically Alaskan, which really surprised me. I'll forgive them for their large collection of made-in-China Alaska t-shirts in light of their array of handicrafts. I loved that they had Alaskan-made knitted and crocheted items, pottery and crafts that included locally found driftwood, sea glass and lava rock. There was a nice selection of affordable handmade jewelery, bric-a-brac and soaps. Bear Country gift shop is a treasure in it's own right!

The owner of this shop charges more for tax then the Seldovia rate and doesn't give customers a…read morereceipt. My husband paid cash for a 30.00 earring purchase and was charged 4.00 tax. The previous customer paid with a credit card and asked for a receipt. The female owner said, you want a handwritten one? Acting like it was a pain for her. The patron said I guess not that's ok (not appearing to be difficult). I went back into the store and asked, what is the tax rate for Seldovia? She said 9.5 %. I told her I was overcharged 4 dollars on a 30.00 dollar purchase. She played dumb and said, I only charge what my register says. I also told her she is practicing very poor business practices not giving receipts to patrons. I doubt she is paying/claiming her tax revenues correctly to the state of Alaska. Don't shop here. The receipt I asked for didn't even have a date or time on it (included in the photo).
