There are a lot of urban legends about Hummel Park -- ghosts, witches, satanic rituals, hangings…read more Look 'em up. And yes, it's a wee bit creepy the first time you visit because you're surrounded by a spiraling forest that seems to be reaching out to grab you. For one, the park is old. Like almost 100 years old. And it's on the north outskirts of Omaha on top of and surrounding river bluffs. Two, it's big. It's easy to get lost in. Going along the hiking trails, you never know what you'll find around the next bend -- it could be nothing, or a raccoon, or a deer, or a turkey vulture, or teenagers smoking weed. There is also a nice patch of groomed grass at the crest of one of the hills at the main entrance of Hummel. You'll often find families hanging out barbecuing and kids playing on the nice jungle gym. You know, normal park activities. I come here for the disc golf. Hummel touts a magnificent and technical 18 hole course that winds through the woods, up and down the bluffs, with a little creek water hazard thrown in for good measure. All in all, Hummel has a lot to offer. It's a nice little day retreat from the city. Emphasis on day, because the place is absolutely horrifying at night.

I've lived in the Candlewood neighborhood for over ten years, and I highly recommended it if you're…read morelooking for a midtown-ish area to check out housing options. There is the Candlewood Lake right at the center of the neighborhood, and we've seen people boat, fish, and swim in it (at the designated swimming beach), so it's a cool little feature of the neighborhood. Our favorite thing to do is just walk around the lake/through the neighborhood. In Spring/Summer, there are also ducks and geese that swim in the lake and are super cute to watch. The neighborhood also has tons of trees and foliage, so going for those little walks is also very pretty and nature filled. There's a small playground and park, where the entrance to the little beach is, and sometimes the neighborhood will host food trucks, summer festivals, and other fun outdoor events for the neighborhood residents. It's a super safe feeling neighborhood, while still being pretty central to everything in Omaha. So if you're considering a move and deciding on a neighborhood, I'd definitely check out Candlewood!

There are parking spots in a proper lot by the start of the trail (near UNMC Hospital) and there is a good amount of street parking in the residential neighborhood surrounding the trail. The scenery of the relatively straight and narrow trail includes lots of trees, some grassy friends, even a golf course. During the summer, there may be a lot of bugs - so take that into consideration if you're visiting in those months.

The swimming area is always the perfect temperature, and our campsite comes with a little private beach which is great for laying out in the sand or just enjoying a swim. The campsites are generally clean and well-maintained, and there are plenty of picnic tables available. They also offer public swimming areas with buoys for safety, which is great for kids. However, I'm giving it 4 stars because the public beaches could be better maintained they just aren't as nice as the private spots included with the campsites. Overall, if you're looking to camp or park your RV close enough to Omaha for convenience but still want to get away, this is a great place. It's never been too crowded when we've visited, and it's perfect for soaking up the sun, enjoying the outdoors, and spending quality time by the water.

I don't know why this place is so popular. It was pretty gross. The sites for tents were mowed ok but there was garbage everywhere. Garbage in the grass, garbage in the trees, and garbage floating in all of the lakes. Even the swimming beach was covered in trash. It was way too packed to feel any sense of seclusion either. We were listening to kids screaming at their parents, parents threatening their kids, and blaring stereos all evening. I guess if you owned a boat or a jet ski and somehow couldn't afford to drive it anywhere better then this place might have some appeal but there are so many nicer places in eastern Nebraska to camp at and spend time outdoors.
