This park was conceived of and built by residents of the neighborhood, after a child was killed in the original park filled with drunks and drug addicts. A group of parents and citizens got together and gathered grant money and city permission, and volunteers from the community came out and physically designed and built the park by hand. The director of the non-profit project lives literally across the street, and comes out personally to watch over the park and the kids 4 days a week. This park represents an amazing amount of community cooperation and involvement for a neighborhood that has been plagued with poverty and violence since I was a little kid (and probably much earlier). All that said, there is still some of the cultural mindset that one would expect from the parents - yesterday when I went there with my kid, two groups of kids, (one Hispanic, one Black), ages ranging from around 7 to 11, were attempting to mediate a conflict over something that supposedly happened at the park last week by telling their stories to the caretakers of the Hispanic kids (two women who spoke limited English). Supposedly there was some name calling last week, that may or may not have escalated to one girl slapping another. At some point some (obviously not credible) threats of violence were exchanged, but absolutely no actual violence, physical contact, or even raised voices occured, but kids in both groups made comments about calling the police over it. Apparently one of them followed through, because a few minutes later the police actually arrived. The officers listened patiently to both parties version of the story, pointed out that all these things happened in the past and that neither side had been perfect, and asked all the kids in both groups if they could let it go and get along from here forward. All the kids in both groups said they could get along, and as the officers began to leave, the two groups actually did integrate and go back to playing. Then the parents of the kids who didn't already have caretakers present showed up... They IMMEDIATELY, without even having talked to the children, went up to the officers who were at their car talking to each other, and began yelling at them and insulting them, complaining that they officers had been "yelling at their children", and requesting names and badge numbers in order to file a complaint. The 3 parents all talked at once, over each other, nearly belligerent, their various complaints about police in general, and there purely imagined complaints about these officers in particular, who had come out and successfully resolved a conflict between elementary school students. All this had absolutely nothing to do with me, but I really didn't want my son to have to see this already resolved conflict become even bigger because of the parents prejudice against cops, so I intervened just to say that I had been there the whole time, and the cops did not takes sides or yell at anyone, and then proceeded to recount the whole story when I was asked follow up questions. The cops took that opportunity to disengage, one of the parents left again, but two others stayed around the entire rest of the time we were there, ranting to each other about cops and saying incomprehensible things to me like "this wouldn't happen if parents were here to watch their kids" and "parents shouldn't just unquestioningly take their kids side in a conflict just because its their kids" - um, those two things are literally exactly what you have been doing! The other group of kids had adult supervision with them, you were the parents who weren't here! The whole thing was a sad reminder of the overlooked part of race relations in our country, the cultural rut we as poor urban Black people can't seem to get out of, the assumptions and prejudices we make that ensure that every interaction with cops is negative and that make it hard for us to ever integrate into larger society. The fact that the director and other staff have to deal with people like this on a daily basis makes it more than understandable that they might come off as a little gruff at times, but the fact that she has undertaken this project at all shows how much she cares about the community and it's children.

This is a great park to meet the needs of a wide range of ages. Beautiful playground with multiple interactive play structures for all ages. Nestled at the top of…read morea hill, it is built into a community neighborhood. Amazing views from any seat, an amazing backdrop as our daughter played. While we were there, two toddlers and a young boy joined the playground. Not many children were present. Our daughter had fun exploring the different parts of play on the structure along with climbing up the wall to the rail of the street. She lasted for almost an hour before she was ready to go. We saw two boys on the full basketball court. There was a water fountain with a refill station, oversized wooden lounge chairs, picnic tables, grassy areas along with trash, recycling and compost bins. We did not see restrooms, but we also did not wonder further than the extra to the playground. Parking is on the street on flat ground or on a slanted slope. Down the road from this area is a water front, lots of shops, eateries, some hotels and spas, grassy areas, coffee shops and more. The Bay Area Discovery Museum is less than a ten minute drive away. Lots to do and see before or after a visit here.

Unusual little neighborhood park with stunning views of the city…read more This is a neighborhood park - not for tourists... but it doesn't stop a tourist from coming here a few blocks off the main road to imagine life in such a serine area. Most of SF and the bay area is so much hustle and bustle and car break INS and crazy - its almost hard to believe that people just a few miles more away enjoy peace and quiet and serenity. Life in the bay doesn't have to be all gun shots and barbed wire and security cameras. Maybe if you live in one of those situations its important you come here to see how the other half lives. Show your kids the world is big - and you don't have to have some extravagant vacation to Japan to teach your kids this. The park is mostly flat but the surrounding street where you might park is very steep - if your diving a manual transmission car you might test your skills.

Unfortunately no shade in the late morning, which is our usual playground time. It looks like they've planted some trees so eventually that will change. Part of the playground is enclosed by a fence, I guess for the smaller kids. But my kids wanted to play in both areas and i found the fence annoying because the gate is on the side farthest from the unfenced section. (I would be in the fenced area with one kid and the other one would want help so I'd have to walk all the way around.) Obviously not a huge deal, but when I'm evaluating playgrounds I certainly think of parental comfort, and how easy it is to park myself in one spot and be able to see everything. Yes it's next to the highway, and there's plenty of traffic noise. But there wasn't any smell or fumes when we were there. We'll certainly continue to come here, most likely on the way to/from Target.

The lady ignored us and continued to fetch with her dogs. The other parent says a lot of neighborhood folks uses the toddler park as a dog park and sometimes she gets scared and won't bring the baby when she sees too many dogs. Come on, there is Point Isabel Dog Park less than 5 min away and Buchanan dog park also less than 5 min away. Please bring your dogs to a dog park and to not a clean children's park! What a tucked away away spot to come across with my wife. We came across this spot after having…read moredinner at Hana Japan. We were in absolute awe because it was very serene. We saw pol just relaxing in their cars, some ppl were fishing and others just taking it all in. Had a great conversation with a car neighbor who told us about some spots here in Berkeley and Oakland to go and check out. It's too cold to go into the water but you can see a bit of San Francisco on a clear day. Its actually a perfect representation of the Bay Area for visitors. Cold, sky is gray, and rocks near the water is covered with slippery seaweed. At the very end of University Ave you can find plenty of parking and two of the odd/unique attractions. There is a giant sundial near the pier. Its 10 foot in diameter and a gift from Berkeley's sister city Sakai, Japan. There is a giant proto-asian culture style statue called "The Guardian" on the grass. The Guardian is an extrapolation of a six-inch clay and wood sculpture in a Buddhist temple in Penang. The city fiercely resisted Frederic Fierstein's plopping of the Guardian. Fierstein fiercely fought back. Fierstein gathered signatures and placed an initiative on the ballot in support of the Guardian. The worst thing about coming so early are there was a person smoking weed in their car and kept loudly cursing on the phone even with kids and old people visibly around.

We planned to visit today, we were not aware our daughter was in for a special treat…read more DINOSAUR EVENT 12-4 PM FREE ADMISSION for all Free sno cones. $2 popcorn. Face painting, bubbles, balloons, games, bounce house, water sprayers, foam bath, food trucks, Solano Public Library book mobile and more. Live music with DJ playing tunes for all. The empty parking lot when we arrived right before noon was now packed with cars double parking and driving around. Sounds of kids playing, exploring together was welcoming. The teapot is refreshing. The spout lets out a mist of cool water when the button is pushed the detached blue station directly in front. The dancing sprinkler play stations accompanied by the foam bath was fun for the big and little, part of the Dinosaur Event. The various activities for the Dinosaur Event, spread throughout the day, kept the littles engaged. What a great event and time had! Our little lasted the entirety of the event time 12-4p ending it with a bag of popcorn and an ice cream from the truck.

The entrance is like walking through a castle to a whole new world gated inside. It was clean, grassy, huge and open spaces with different areas to play for the kids. There are benches and picnic tables everywhere too. They also have restrooms on site too. Lots of grassy and shady areas to hang out as well. Our grandbaby had a great time running everywhere to her hearts content and she cannot wait to go back again with her parents.
