I recently had to travel to a funeral in Kulm, North Dakota. There is no hotel in Kulm, so we stayed at the Prairie Rose Inn in nearby Edgeley. After an eight night stay, I can say without a doubt that this was my worst experience in any hotel and the management has no business in hospitality.
Making the reservation was easy enough, except that the manager failed to inform me that there are separate rates depending on your method of payment. Paying in cash is $10/night cheaper than using a card. When we arrived at the hotel, we were asked for a credit card to hold our room. Instead the manager charged our card. When we found out several days later about the cheaper rate and attempted to pay cash, the manager refused to refund us the extra amount we had paid and lied by telling us he had informed us of the different rates.
Both the website and a sign at the front desk mention a free continental breakfast. I don't know what they think "continental breakfast" means, but I can tell you what was offered - stale donuts and blueberry muffins. The donuts and muffins were always set out the night before so management wouldn't have to get up in the morning to attend to the guests. I really do not think I can exaggerate how horribly dry and inedible the muffins and donuts were.
The morning of the funeral I called the front desk to request an iron (there is none in the room). The manager arrived with just the iron and stated that he has no ironing boards, and we'd have to use the desk as an ironing board.
The final insult came when we arrived back at the hotel for our last night of our stay, discovering that our room had not been attended to by housekeeping. When I went to the front desk to complain, I found the manager with his feet up on the desk. His response to my complaint was that the maid was out of town. I'm not sure what kind of excuse that was supposed to be, but it wasn't surprising that he'd offer such a half-assed reason for not performing one of the most basic services of a hotel.
Overall, I do not recommend this hotel for anyone or for any reason. If you absolutely need a place to stay in the area, I suggest any of the larger chain hotels in Jamestown. Yes, it's a drive, but you are almost certain to encounter service that is friendly and more professional. The last thing I wanted to deal with after burying a family member was this hotel's incompetent management. read more
