WARNING: Beware of Excessive and Illegal Tow Fees! I want to share my experience so others are aware before dealing with this company. Recently my boyfriend's car was towed from a private residential lot even though he lives there and had a valid parking permit (he just did not get a chance to display it yet). When retrieving the car, the company charged $350+ -- claiming $150 for the tow plus an additional $150 "special equipment fee" (which they said was for a snatch block) and more in storage. This is NOT how Wisconsin towing law is supposed to work. Under Wisconsin Administrative Code § Trans 319.03, the rules for non-consensual private property tows are: Base removal (tow) charge: up to $150 Storage: up to $25 per 24 hours (outdoor) or $35 per 24 hours (indoor) Additional up to $150 only if special circumstances apply -- not automatically. ‼ What special circumstances can legally justify an extra $150? According to Wis. Admin. Code Trans 319.03(1)(d), the extra charge is ONLY allowed when: 1. The vehicle has unusual characteristics (e.g., oversized, extremely heavy, or disabled in a way that normal towing methods cannot work), 2. There are severe spatial constraints or limited access that make a standard tow impossible, 3. There is an extraordinary recovery situation (like off-road, stuck in a ditch, accident recovery, or hazards). Simply being parked between two cars in a normal parking lot is not one of these conditions and does not justify a special-equipment fee. A snatch block is standard winching equipment not "special" in most ordinary tows. When I challenged the charge, the company asserted it was justified, but this is not accurate under Wisconsin law. - If you've been charged excessive or unlawful towing fees: I urge you to file a complaint with the following agencies: Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) - this agency enforces the towing fee limits under Trans 319: www.dot.wisconsin.gov search "towing complaint" You can also email the Motor Vehicle Enforcement / Towing Regulation unit. Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) - for unfair or deceptive business practices: datcp.wi.gov File a consumer complaint form Local Consumer Protection Unit or City Attorney's Office -- especially in cities like Milwaukee -- they may investigate business practices and licensing. Here is the wisconsin Code Reference Wisconsin Admin. Code § Trans 319.03 -- sets limits on tow and storage fees and lists what qualifies for special equipment charges. Bottom line: A normal tow should be a max of $150, and extra charges must meet very specific conditions. ‼If you were charged $350 or more for a tow that did not meet those conditions, you may have grounds to dispute it and report the company.‼ read more

Blew a tire on the highway coming home from work. They told me it take 40 min to get to me. Adam was there in 30 min and had me at a tire repair place in 15 min. Great customer service and Adam was the nicest guy! I think he deserves a raise! read more

Prairie Land Towing This company illegally towed my son's car from a legal parking spot near Dominion property they contract with in Shorewood, WI. We originally thought the car was stolen. Nothing left at the parking spot to let us know what happened. I contacted the Shorewood police department and they had no immediate record of the car being towed. I only discovered where the car was through the Verizon Hum device we had on the car. I sent the police officer my pictures and agreed this company totally messed up. I called this company and the manager is totally dumb since he reviewed the pictures they took and also did not see the error they made. They obviously do not know how to do their job. They made NO offer to get my son who was without a car and lost wages for that day. DID YOU HEAR THAT ? LOST WAGES ! THEY DO NOT CARE .. NOR WILL THEY CARE FOR YOU !!! read more

HORRENDOUS service. Prairie Land Towing are predatory towers that held my vehicle hostage while demanding an exhorbitant $1800 dollar fee to tow it less than 3 miles. They managed to further damage my car during the towing process. Their practices should be illegal. DO NOT USE. read more

This past Saturday morning while making the 430 mile trip from Toledo, OH to Appleton, WI my 228,000 mile 2002 Caddy DeVille conked out on a Milwaukee Interstate. Searching "roadside assistance" on my handheld Prairie Land towing popped up. A call to the dispatcher got me quick, safe, and courteous assistance. The two gentlemen suggested a local Firestone operation who did a fine job repairing my auto for me. Hats off to the entire team and Eric, if you see this it ended up the fuel pump was shot. My college-age daughter's car was legally parked in a lot, for which she paid $100/month for parking. Prairie Land had a list of cars that were allowed to park in that lot and her car was on the list. They even spoke with my daughter on the phone so she could verify that she was legally parked, but they still towed it because she didn't have the permit displayed. She tried to get back to the university-owned apartment in time to show them the permit, but they didn't wait and towed it anyways. It cost her $400, and they weren't willing to work with her before or after towing. read more

Never needed a tow before until Monday morning on my ride into work. As an OnStar subscriber, I have immediate access to 'roadside assistance'; I pay for it each month. That morning, OnStar let me down and Prairie Land Towing picked me up! If you're ever stranded and in need of a tow, quickly, don't call anyone else; trust me. After waiting 15 minutes for the OnStar operator to locate my car and find a tow truck company open at 7am, I hung up and decided to do this myself. So after a quick search on my phone, I called Prairie Land Towing. A friendly operator answered my Monday morning call and immediately assured me, that a tow truck was in route and on the way to pick me and my Saab up, within the next 30 minutes. Less than 20 minutes later, Jarred, my tow truck driver shows up and he's amazing! Friendly, personable and understanding of my current situation (as you can imagine, I wasn't the friendliest customer at that point). In under 10 minutes, we were in route to drop the car off to be serviced. Jarred was awesome! I can't say it enough. Prairie Land Towing is definitely the way to go. They are professional and expeditious. I have one of their cards in my car and hopefully won't need them again, but if I do, I know I'm in good hands. read more

The other night we had a situation where we had to have a vehicle removed within four hours. Of course this is on a Friday night ! We had called at least 6 other towing companies,finally the last place recommended you guys...( we were down to 2 hrs,before lots of fines from the city) I'll try and shorten this up..You sent out an ANGEL...named ADAM ! The lady who's car had to be towed was distraught! Adam showed up and SAVED the day! He was unbelievably kind to her,and putting her at ease and kept it professional ! If we could give out 10 stars...ADAM would receive them ! I ve worked at lots of different places and even owned my own company...Employees like ADAM are hard to come by!...he should have a raise !!! HORRIBLE BUSINESS!!! Got a tow from them a month or so ago. First tow guy struggled to attempt to jump car with battery pack, then couldnt find the attachment connector on his truck to jump from his truck. Next struggled to put car on truck as he didn't ever ask me to put car in neutral until i told him i wanted to. Proceeded to get lost while taking me and car to dealership. Once car go to dealership a "miracle" occurred and it jumped right away for them. Called their office to complain and they couldn't find my car in system anywhere. Once finally got them to confirm i was in system, took weeks to hear back from them. Then when i asked about getting a refund due to driver error or possibly broken charger kit, i was told i'd get call back within 24 hours. More than a week later when i called back, i was told they couldn't offer a refund due to driver leaving their employ and the truck being out of state so couldn't test the charging kit. OMFG avoid this business like the plague since i know i will. read more
