Laggia is the store of Alfred Laggia the local Venetian designer who creates incredibly complex hand made intricate mesh jewellery pieces in his studio in Venice. He makes tiny delicate pieces as well as dramatic large pieces which were a favourite of Gianni Versace in his runway shows. Ask to see the amazing mesh head pieces. Sabrina Laggia (Alfredo's wife) works in the store and can also show you photographs of his larger scale works. Because it is such a tiny store it is easy to pass it by, assuming that it is part of all the usual tourist fare. I highly recommend that you go inside and look at the designs as they are quite incredible. I bought a neck piece and a cuff bracelet both of which are a bit grand for me, but so amazing that I'm sure I will wear them to a special event in the future. If the shop is closed go across the hall to the wine store which they also own and Sabrina will let you in.

The store itself is a few stories tall, with handbags, luggage, and some accessories on the first floor and women's items upstairs. Both times I went, there was a line outside to get in and then another wait inside before being helped by a sales associate. Thankfully, when it was my turn, I ended up with the most wonderful sales associate. She first helped me with shoes, but since they didn't have the pair I wanted to try, I almost left. Instead, I wandered over to luggage--something I've always wanted to invest in--and ended up buying the cutest carry-on bag. While waiting for the stamping process on both the bag and a passport holder I purchased, I started eyeing one of their small flagship bags and ended up splurging on a gold exotic leather bag that I absolutely love. Throughout it all, my associate was thoughtful, offering us water and suggesting pieces without being pushy. For women if you like heels but not a fan of stiletto or thin pointy heels this is a great brand for shoe that are ultra comfortable with decent heels. My wife loves their stuff and also likes the fact that she can buy heels that are nice to walk in. For men there is a great selection of casual and dress shoes, belts, bags and so on. I do like their designs and seems a little bit more elegant and classy a look. As I discovered during our walks around Venice there is at least 3-4 shops from this brand spread out around town and it is much cheaper than buying top end stuff like Gucci and Prada and so on and actually of great quality.

These stores or stalls look practically identical; the shop/stall owner may or may not be Italian and they'll be selling the same types of t-shirts, magnets, keychains, Carnevale masks and jewelry made of Murano glass. These souvenirs can be of dubious quality and most likely not be made in Italy. When I souvenir shop for people I avoid those stores like the plague. I try as much as possible to shop locally wherever I go and in most places when I do find a good shop I find it by accident. Feelin' Venice is an example of a local shop. You'll notice immediately as you step in the shop the difference in the layout and content from other souvenir stores. The shop feels more clean, the layouts is more simple and the designs in their merchandise is more contemporary. More importantly you see the people running the shop passionate about both their business and their home city. The shop has the staple T-shirts, bags, mugs and stationery but the designs are obviously more thought out and represent the city well. However this particular business has won me over because this was the store that I bought my most favorite souvenir of my 2 week trip: a rope bracelet with an attached iron prow that adorns all Venetian gondolas. I immediately fell in love with the bracelet at first sight and purchased it immediately. My only regret was that they sold it in only one size. I ended up losing it 2 weeks later and had to order a replacement online in a smaller size. The shop is located somewhere along San Marco. Use Google Maps if you don't want to get lost finding the store.
