Powell's Books is the go to bookstore experience for PNW locals and those visiting as well. This location is located in a mall where there is a parking lot with a good amount of parking spots. This one is not as big as their popular location, but it is definitely still very spacious with a Barnes & Nobles type vibe. They still have a good selection of products here and prices are fair. All of the staff are friendly and helpful. Definitely stop by here to browse around and get a drink right next door at ChiCha San Chen as well! read more

What a lovely store, it keeps me coming back because of it's friendly and comfy environment. The clerks are always helpful and warm, I never feel too awkward asking for help. Their prices are pretty average for new books, which is a bit spendy as it is. And their selection is huge! If i ever need to find a book that isn't there I know I can always order it through their website to pick up at the store, too. The mall it's in has tons of options for food and drinks so you could literally spend a whole day there if you wanted to which is dangerous for me haha. They have a lot of events, the one I've added to this review is of Chuck Tingle's event on Aug 19th 2025! They all seem well organized and the crowds are very respectful. read more

Powell's Books in Beaverton is a gem. While it's located inside a mall, that actually makes parking super easy compared to the other locations. We visited for an author event with Colleen Houck, celebrating the release of her new book Tiger's Trek, and it was fantastic. Of the three Powell's locations, this one ended up being our favorite thanks to the ease of parking, the spacious layout that makes browsing comfortable, and the well-run event. read more

Another one of Portland's, "must visit" places to see or experience. But not at this location, this place still has that "newness" to it. The iconic Powell City of Books is in downtown! And it applies to the weirdness of Portland, with that being in a building with different color levels. It's huge, it's historic, it has a lot to see, and it takes up an entire city block. It might even be too large that you'll think you're in another world. I recall getting lost the first time there! As for this spin off, Powell's Books, it's still a decently large bookstore in itself! But only one level and at the end of a strip mall. You likely won't get lost here lol, as they do provide a lot of what you're searching for. The staff here are also helpful, and they usually find the book I'm lookin' for if I cannot find it myself. And they'll help take in any used books you'd like to sell. I cannot comment on the rates as I have not sold any books here. I do love the staff "recommendation tags" that some books have. They store in general has the usuals like the long magazine rack, a huge children's area, board/card games section, and gifts for the anime/manga fans. Believe me, it's way different here versus the store downtown. There "weird," here "normal." The good thing about this location is that you won't be dealing with a parking garage or getting charged. I love this location. This location usually has a few author events each month and enough free parking for everyone. I appreciate not having to pay for parking like the downtown location and since I'm coming from Salem for these events, I'm glad to miss the Portland traffic. I find most of the books I look for here and the staff has always been friendly to me. The only con I can think of is that I've found the bathrooms need cleaning just about every time I visit. read more

So obviously one star JUST for the book smell lol. I've come here twice for order pickup and it was a quick 5 minute IN and OUT. I would buy SO many books if left alone WITH money. I LOVE reading. They have all sorts of cute pens and stationary. Snacks and sips. It's insane I could probably spend $1000 in a snap. They've got used books which helps with not spending AS much as you could. If you like books, and shopping local hit up your local Powell's. Keep books in hands. It's so important now. More than ever! read more

Chuck Palahniuk was a sweetheart. I went to see author Amanda Knox speak at Powell's in Cedar Hill's and Chuck conducted the interview. (Knox was wrongfully convicted of murder in Italy and spent four years incarcerated and has just released her second book.) Afterwards was autograph time, which I almost never take interest in, but I consider Chuck one of my favorite authors, and the Fourteen Year Old was with me, so I asked her if she wanted to get Fight Club signed as I had been recommending it to her beforehand. She normally doesn't care about those sort of things but she surprisingly decided to get an autograph. We went to the section where his books were, and of course multiple people were also grabbing books of his to get signed. Chuck was very soft spoken and kind. I had been doing carpentry work all day and was dusty and gross. When I walked up he reached out his had to shake mine, but my hand still was stained with Quad (a very strong sealant that is often hard to clean off) and grime and all, and so I apologized, and said I was covered in dirt etc., and held my hand back so he wouldn't feel the need to shake it. Chuck didn't hesitate, shook my hand anyway, and stated, "but it's good dirt right?" He wasn't wrong. While in line, before meeting him, an employee came up to everyone getting their book signed, and with a sticky note wrote the person's name and stuck it to the book, so as to save Chuck time. I was getting the book for my daughter and so the sticky note said "Maxine." He asked me why I was dirty but I didn't hear him the first time. Maybe because he's so soft spoken, or maybe because I'm getting older and losing my hearing, or a combination of both. He then signed the book and also wrote: "I am Maxine's dirty book!" Which I didn't realize until afterward. Maybe he thought I was Maxine? (It's Portland (or nearby) so not that wouldn't be unusual.) Though I didn't see exactly what he wrote until afterwards, I noticed that his penmanship was fantastic, and told him that. He shrugged and said he had had a lot of practice. With all of the other folks getting their pictures taken Chuck was putting his arms around them as if they were old friends. When it was picture time for us I let him know he doesn't have to touch me as I'm all grubby, so instead of just putting one arm around me, he put both arms and leaned on me. Well...positives and, not really negatives per se...that wouldn't be fair...but definitely things to consider. I'd gone in to check out the selection and search for a few new reads. The store is well organized, with a good variety and helpful employees. I was surprised that so many of the books were used, but that fact lead to me notice their used book purchasing counter. We tried 3 times to bring a sack of books in just to see if they'd want them, and if so how much they'd offer for them (after seeing online they only accept them on Fri-Sun). First 2 times we tried the line was just too long & slow moving, and each person waiting had loads of books so I didn't consider staying...I'm not that patient or curious. My husband, however, decided to give it one more go for curiosity's sake. Since they open at 10 he arrived at 9:30 on a Sunday morn and was 2nd in line...the line continuing to swell up til opening. Once inside and at the counter the process was easy, however they are only in need of specific genres, authors, etc. So after 3 trips to sell we ended up with 10$ worth of credit for 7 books purchased. They just had no need for all my mass published airport reads (which they do offer to donate for you should you not want to haul them back home). Moral of the story: if you read pretty common books it may not be worth your time either...we spent more in gas money than we made trying to sate our curiosity. My advice if you might have books that aren't mass produced...get in line 30 minutes before they open for a fast turn around. Lesson learned and curiosities answered. Still yet, a nice bookstore. read more

Honestly I have been going to Powell's lately to just walk around and observe all the books and non-book products they have for sale. The prices are especially good and they support local sellers. They have so many odds and ends that could be picked up for easy stocking stuffer ideas. I was actually there looking for some advice for Dystopian novels/series for my daughter. She is an avid reader and has plowed through so many already. As I mentioned in my check in, Laura at the customer service counter was wonderful with her advice and suggestions. Not sure why you guys decided to let one of your employees recommend Harry Potter as a staff pick at the front of the store. Like... really? The 4th highest selling book of all time? The franchise that has dominated the media landscape for the past 25+ years? That little hidden gem? Glad you put a spotlight on the book that literally everyone has heard of. I don't like to assume malice over ignorance, but I can't imagine any actual reason for this besides using it as a transphobic dogwhistle. And immediately after Portland's belated pride festivities...really? I'm not offended that you carry the books. Of course you do. I don't care about that. What I take issue with here is how you feel it's appropriate to put these books on a pedestal when their author is actively using the money she makes from them to campaign against human rights for transgender people. As a queer book lover, I really expected better from you guys. This might seem like a small issue, but to your trans (and trans ally) customers, this is a clear signal that they are unwelcome and unsafe in your store. read more

I've been to the downtown location a few times, which I love. I can get lost in that maze of books for hours. The facade of this bookstore may appear like other big bookstores since it's in Cedar Hills Crossing. However, it still has the Powell's Books charm with handwritten notes that include staff picks or Oregon features. This location is smaller with more open space between aisles to roam around. My son loves books like me. We went straight to the children's books section, which had a good selection of classic and fun books. He picked out a few books that caught his eye. The feeling of holding and browsing through books instead of shopping online was a refreshing feeling that makes me want to return as soon as possible. I also love their bookmarks too so I always get one each time I go. The prices are reasonable, and it's nice knowing that I'm supporting an independent bookstore. It's a good location to do a causal browse without having to deal with downtown parking. read more

Doesnt look like much from the outside, but inside is an expansive, twisting labyrinth of bookshelves overflowing with new and used books. Great selection of not only reading materials, but gifts and candies. There were quiet spots to read in as well as a separate children's area. I went to the store Friday June 27th after work and got here right at 6:30. There was a ticketed author event happening; which was published and advertised in the website and social media platforms. What wasn't advertised was that the entire store would be closed for the event. When I got there; I was asked by an employee if I had a ticket - I stated no; I just came to shop for some books. And they told me in a rude fashion that since I didn't have a ticket that I needed to leave. I ended up going to Barnes & Noble to buy books; and I'm not sure I will contribute financially to any powells location moving forward. read more

Powell's is great! I was able to take my son here and he found a book, puzzle and reusable bag instead of a gift bag and it cost $5 more and was a Powell's reusable tote bag. Love all the variety and love that we just had to go to Beaverton since we live closer to Newberg! The staff were all great and helpful that I interacted with. Value was good, especially since the book was a used one and much cheaper than a brand new one! My son was able to put together a gift for his friend at a decent price and he did great picking it all out on his own. read more

This was my first visit to this location and I was pleasantly surprised that it was tucked away in a "dead" mall. But I didn't mind that at all since I was able to come out with some books I've been wanting. Pro tip - search for what you want on their online website first so that you know what locations the books you want are at. It saves you time from scouring the place in hopes you find the books you want! I was so happy I scored the Kiki's Delivery Service Picture book and some more books to add to my every growing The Baby-Sitter's Club series (which is almost complete now!) This is like a junior version of the other Powell's Books store and I liked that it was less hectic! You're still getting the best value for these books and the staff here is just as incredible. Our one and only experience here was an in-and-out affair (I knew what I wanted, and I knew where it was), but this impressively vast space is a complimentary companion to the main Powell's location that everyone knows and loves, and by proxy deserves a similar 5 stars, for all the same reasons: a comprehensive collection, variety, cleanliness, easily navigable, helpful staff, coffee shop, cozy reading spaces, kid-friendliness, etc. Better parking arrangement, for sure, though! I probably wouldn't frequent it over their flagship store on Burnside, unless I was on the hunt for a specific title that is only stocked here, as was the case this last weekend, but for locals in the area, this more remote branch of this legendary publication purveyor might is a worthy-enough avatar. read more

Still prefer tangible books over reading on a a kindle or tablet. I like to hold a book in my hands, turn the pages and even like the scent! While everyone loves the downtown location, I actually prefer this smaller offshoot. I can wander around easily, peruse the various titles, and always find something to purchase. Plus, having a huge parking lot makes it very convenient. With all the other stores in Cedar Hills Shopping Center, I can check several errands off my list on the same trip. Those working here are knowledgeable and if you can't find a certain book, they can find it instantly plus they will make recommendation based on your likes. read more

I had remembered reading a book once that I really enjoyed and when my boyfriend mentioned Pandas being unfit for existence, a stance I used to hold Before said book, I just had to have it and read it out pompously to refute him. I spent all morning searching for it, with no results. I remembered what the cover looked like and a few small things about it. Mostly, just that I needed to have it in my clutches again. Carly searched around and found us that sucker! In about ten minutes! We bought it and felt complete. She went above and beyond and just really showed us the true meaning of professionalism; she did the job I had attempted as an amateur much better than I could and made her customers giddy with joy. There are new arrivals, and books from the Rare Book Collection. There are used books hiding among the new books, for bargain hunters. Powells is for book lovers, as fabric or hardware stores are for lovers of fabric or hardware. It is a place to explore what there is, rather than surfing the Internet for what you think you are looking for, without stopping to smell the roses along the way. Powells is also a great place to find gifts for non book lovers too. There's games, socks, stickers, and housewares to delight the distinctive taste of those who have everything and those who have nothing. read more

Haven't been to Powell's in a really long time! I had a gift card so I decided to buy things that I usually wouldn't haha but it's something that I always wanted. I like Powell's misc. things. I was hoping to finish my manga collection of this one series but they had 0 books which is unfortunate. Therefore, I wandered around a bit more. The man at the info desk was very friendly and nice. He made everyone's mood a lot lighter as they entered the bookstore. Super friendly, kind, and polite! In the end, I got a Rikkuman face mask, PNW t-shirt, boba socks, and Kiki's Delivery face towel. You know what I mean now by misc? LOL. Anyways, you can be at Powell's forever and I had a good time there! Not a lot of people during the weekday, just before noon. read more

I love Powell's; this location in particular. I find it much less overwhelming in size than the Portland location while still having a large variety of books. I've also sold a few books at the used book counter and gotten a fair amount of store credit back. I also love their summer reading challenge! Very friendly spot. read more

I am not sure if their book numbering is off or if the shelves are not in order by author name or genre or what not, but the staff never seems to be able to find what I asked for... The sitting space chairs are metal not comfy. The tables are wobbly. The lighting near the back middle of the shelves is poor. read more

Don't compare this to the downtown branch, that's not a fair comparison. This location can hold its own with a large selection and mall parking. It seems to be missing warm inviting reading areas but maybe that is the point? This would be a great stop when you have a specific book in mind or not as much time to get caught up in the selections. But I wouldn't say it's a great place to just sit and browse. They also seemed to have limited staff available so yes they were friendly but also seemed pressed for time. For a newer location it is surprising they only had two bathrooms available and that's tough when one of them was out of service. There seems to be more potential for this location and I hope it stays successful. read more

I was in SW Portland visiting my Son last weekend and we were driving around after a trip to his favorite card store (Gongaii Games). I wanted another view of Downtown Beaverton, but David's directions had me pull into the Cedar Hills Crossing shopping center. As soon as I said: "Why are we here?, I saw the front of a Powell's Books I never knew existed. This Powell's is certainly smaller than the Downtown Mother Ship, but significantly larger than the Hawthorne Branch. When we walked in, they were still ramping up from previously stricter COVID requirements, and a few things (like mall access and a separate zine/independent press section) were still closed up or limited. Beyond that, the store is large and roomy, and I enjoyed wandering around through various sections. David found a few books, while I did find an interesting zine and a nice small canvas bag. read more

The mall closes at 6pm on Sundays, and we got to the area at around 5:59pm. Powell's closes at 7pm, though, which was great since that was the main store I wanted to hit. Now, this was the first Powell's I've been to. I'm sure I'll hit more Powell's as hubby and I visit Portland, but this was the closest one to us, and we needed to stretch out our legs, so win-win. First impression of this place is that it is large for a bookstore. SO MANY BOOKS (as it should be). I loved the amount of space in each aisle so that people can get around you. The selection is so, so, so expansive and extensive. The departments are also clearly labeled so that you'll know where sci fi is versus the children's section. The security guard in the front had greeted me when I first came in, but the staff members didn't really say "hi" or "welcome". Which I was perfectly fine with because of how tired I was and how I like to be enveloped in books instead of small talk. And clean! And everyone wearing masks! The hand sanitizer stations were empty, though. Back to the books, they had hardcover and paperback versions of a good number of titles, as well as new and used versions of books. They also have a good number of non-book items, like mugs, plates, decorative pieces, scarfs, tote bags, etc.; you'll find a gift for someone here if you're looking for something. They do sometimes have autographed books, too! I ended up not getting anything at this round, but that was mainly because of how tired I was and I didn't want to carry a bag. Will definitely be purchasing something from a Powell's later this week, though! So many good items. I felt comfortable in this Powell's; it was an enjoyable, low-key experience. read more

Selling your used books at Powell's in Cedar Hills: Totally disorganized, the way they do things, ELON MUSK could have come up with this idea. Get some employees fired, open the counter only three days a week with the result that customers have to wait one or two hours in line, while a slow employee checks your used books. They tell you to go and look around in the store while the slow employee checks the books. Once the books are checked it is not uncommon that the customer did not return yet to quickly check out so the line can move on without delay. Then the employee calls though the PA system that is mumbled and no one understands what he's saying that "Mark" needs to come back to the counter (the example I observed). This was repeated three times and after about 10+ minutes "Mark" finally showed up. In the meantime 20 people waited in line and the employee waited for those 10+ minutes for "Mark", just standing there doing nothing. Customers have to stand, there is not a line of seats for people holding books, I wish the incompetent person who came up with this system would have to stand there for two hours with a box of box in his/her hands. If there is no response to this review below then Powell's just don't care, but many people in this long line perhaps would like to have an explanation of Powell's insane system. read more
