Jan's has moved from their far West Beaverton location to this downtown Beaverton spot: upgrade! They are so wonderful here! Focused on getting you exactly what you want and NEED to read. They have a great trade and credit program which I take advantage of and love! So cozy and packed with great books! Jan is retired but owner is fun and welcoming. The shop is small but mighty with an enticing blend of old and new. The shelves are organized by category and alpha. I know my eyes were wide. Why have I now discovered Jan's? This bookstore recently moved to Beaverton, from Aloha and what a beautiful space it is so far. Remodeling and work is still being done but a great space of used and new books for a inexpensive price! Origially I thought the asking price was the price I would have to pay but found out I was wrong! If the book has the sticker from Jan's then it is HALF OFF the asking price! Books starting at $2-3 dollars, childrens and higher! The store is well organized and beautifully displayed, the books are in really pristine condition for being used. The new books are displayed as well. One can donate and trade books too, when trading you earn store credit and a system in place to have you not buy another copy of the same book (unless you want to). The staff are really passionate in what they do and engaged with the customers that come in. Also, have a special program for teachers! The grand opening hasn't been set but a great little find near the Beaverton library and farmer's market, can't wait to come back amd explore even more! read more

Jan's has an OK selection... Not huge but that's OK. Reasonably priced. I wished that they had more classics but I know you don't have a lot of control over your selection when you buy from your community. I spent about half an hour there and found 2 or 3 that I was looking for. While checking out I had to wait about 5 minutes for the woman behind the counter to finish a conversation with somebody about something not even book related. I asked her if she had a bathroom.... She hesitated and said "uhm...... No." The clear hesitation and the fact that they host little events and groups there tells me they do have a bathroom, but she didn't want me to use it. A little odd in a bookstore where many like to go, relax, read, etc. Also... There's a big ugly stamp on the inside of my book which I don't agree with... Put a price tag on the outside but no need to brand the books. It was an off experience for me as a bookstore lover and I wouldn't go back. read more

Great bookstore in Downtown Beaverton. Nice selection of used books. I like that you can trade in books and receive a credit to be used for future used books purchases. If I need a new book they are able to order for me. Sometimes depending when you order it arrives in a few days which is amazing. I love supporting the local artists as well that have items for sale in the store. One stop shopping for any gift you may need. read more

Selling books here is very easy. Owner is helpful. But don't expect cash. It's store credits. And there's a rule to use (for just half of what you buy basically). Junior books are good deals here. But they don't have many classics that we are looking for. Call ahead to ask help if you don't have time to wait in line. They are extremely good letting only few people inside at once. A cool used bookstore. They specialize in used paperbacks, but they did have a few new books, too. Most notably, there was a display of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies right up next to the checkout counter. It seems like that's their specialty. They have lots and lots of romance and mystery novels. Their Nora Roberts collection is a whole aisle! I ended up just getting a 30-Minute Meals cookbook. (Their cookbook collection is quite limited.) I was really looking for a more current title, but it really is primarily a used bookstore. So, I was disappointed, but it wasn't really their fault. At the checkout counter I got the rundown on their pricing and buying. It's actually pretty simple and quite smart on their part. They charge 50% of the cover price plus 25 cents for all their used titles. They "buy" your used books for 25% of the cover price of the book. They don't give you money, they let you spend your "credit" in the store. The checkout girl offered to enter me into their computer and start and account to keep track of my purchases, but I declined. I imagine they'd save your credits in their system, too. read more

I haunt used book stores from coast to desert but Jans is my local go to place. They usually have a good supply of the newest reads available in paperback on their New Books rack in the front of the store, plus have popular authors older books by the gross. Jans has a fair Romance section, an excellent Mystery and main stream Novels areas and a fair Si-Fi section...but it seems people aren't as good about bringing si-fi back as they are about the other genres. Their pricing is pretty typical-half cover price and they promise to buy back any book with their stamp, except for those with the punches in the back that indicate super sale books. This year Jans instituted a wonderful computer system that keeps tracks of the books I've bought, since I tend to read authors all the way from first to last book, I can forget if I've read something..the computer tells all. The ladies at Jans are uber nice and know their business well. My dog, Fiona, visited Jans as her first out of the house trip as a pup and shes missed if I don;t bring her back. They are also organizing a bus road trip to the big Romance Writers convention in L.A. nest spring that sounds like a kick-something that daughter and I are considering going on. Keep up the good work Jans-we readers need you. read more

I first stopped in to see whether this nondescript strip mall used bookstore in my neighborhood would deign to carry my novels, especially since I was at the time published through a small press. Not only did they want my books, but they have a special shelf for local authors, and were warm, gracious, and welcoming, making me feel like my offerings were worthy of the treatment they would accord to a best selling author. As a reader, I deeply appreciate the breadth of their selection, encompassing a range of genres, with great strength in romances, science fiction, and kids' books. They are enthusiastic fans of their stock in trade, and more than once have been so excited about a given book that they offered to buy the books back if we did not love them completely. The owner works hard to keep abreast of the immense changes in the book selling landscape, partnering with Kobo to offer ereaders and ebooks, and actively engaging the vibrant local writing community. If you love books, love talking about books you've loved, and love hearing about books and authors you might not yet have encountered, Jans is the best bet in the area. read more

Good: location is sweet for a strip mall. There's a Franz bread outlet and a game store (board games I think? I saw frisbees though?) and tons of parking. The books are all easy to price: Half off cover price. No systematic chart to check out. Negative: UHHHH HALF OFF COVER PRICE Is ridiculous for a paperback from the 80s. I browsed true crime and Stephen King and all those were $3.50-7. I'm sorry, if I plow through an Ann Rule story in 2 hours I don't think I should pay $3.75. I picked up a Robin Cook paperback for $3.75 since I'd made the trip out. The staff were friendly, like a little knitting circle type of women. Sweet and friendly. I work in Beaverton every now and then and I'd stop if I was sorta nearby (esp since the other businesses in the strip mall were interesting) but I wouldn't come out of my way for it. I know Powell's has everything but it's a massive conglomerate to sort through. I am looking for the perfect cozy bookshop with old paperbacks for like $2, no frills, nothing fancy. This didn't fit the bill for me. read more

Jan's is one of the last great small business owners bookstores left! I don't just shop here because of this. I shop here because they rock. I can call and have a book held for days, they take books in print and audio in for credits towards more purchases, they are kind, funny and always ready to help. They also try to get the community involved in book clubs and have authors in for book signings. Love that unique to bookstore smell!! read more

I've now been into this cute little bookshop a handful of times, and each time I've had a great experience. Lori is super sweet and helpful, the ambiance is comforting and calm, and they offer a great selection of paperbacks! I even learned they do painting classes! I love this place! They are all about teachers...there are so many amazing things about this placers me count the ways: 1. They have a teacher credit program which allows teachers to get a several books for their classrooms FREE! 2. They allow school libraries to give them a wish list and then they put those up so people can donate 3. You buy 5 regular priced books you get one free! 4. Super helpful 5. I am impressed with the selection of new and used books at reasonable prices, as well as the knowledgeable sales people. Although they obviously specialize in paperback books, I was able to find two upmarket hardcover books I wanted on my last visit. Also, the fact that Jan's sells Kobo E-Readers and E-books (both in-building and online) indicates the owner is a step ahead of many indie bookstore owners in understanding the huge changes that are transforming the world of publishing and bookselling. They really do have reasonably priced books (tons of romance, sci-fi and mystery paperbacks) and some hard to find items too. I would love to rate them higher but when I go in the 2 women behind the counter bicker and snipe at each other so much it sours my mood and the fun of shopping there. Its really unprofessional. And I hate buying a book or 2 and having them argue about the price when I'm standing right there. They can be really helpful with suggesting similar authors and books. read more

Great shop! I was so pleased at how wonderfully organized every section is. Seems like a lot of small bookstores are rather "willy-nilly" in their setup, but Jan's keeps the shelves looking beautiful! They also have a free coffee station, which I think should be in every bookstore. :) read more

So, this is the real deal. I am a librarian at a local high school and sometimes our students "forget" where they left a book or maybe a coffee jumped out of their hands and onto the book they checked out from us. Jan's Paperbacks to the rescue! I went in there with a list of books that needed replaced, but I didn't feel like spending the money to buy brand new. Not only did I find a book I needed, but it was hardcover and practically new! When I took the book up to check out I found that they offer educator discounts and deals...and the book I needed would be...wait for it....FREE! In addition, the owner took a copy of the list of books I am looking for and my number and said she would call if any of them came in. I have no doubt that she will. I love supporting local and I have used Jan's Paperbacks for many years. I did not think of them being able to help me professionally (which helps you taxpayers as well!) by letting me find replacement materials for our students. This is really a win-win for me and I thank them for helping our schools...and me! read more

This is my FAVORITE bookstore! Everyone is friendly and very helpful. They will help you find a new author or "that author who writes about...fill in the blank..". The computer system is great in reminding me what I have already read and I love the fact that if they don't have a book that I want I can put in a request for it and they'll email me when it comes in. They have a little bit of everything and I have never left empty handed. The ladies of Jan's Paperbacks have watched my family grow (my first child use to hang out in the car seat at the front desk while I browsed books). Now my oldest can't wait to go and pick out a new book from the children's section, it's becoming a family event to go book shopping. :) read more

This place should be avoided. I have purchased books from them for a while and every time I go in they eyeball me like I am going to shoplift; I guess you have to be either female or an elderly person to get courteous service. They also have some bogus store credit policies like when you trade in boks for credit and then make a purchase, only half of the purchase amount is used for store credit. So if you have $10 store credit and make a purchase for $5, only $2.50 of your store credit can be used. Bad service and bad policies give this place 1 star. read more

Can't believe I hadn't been in before. On my first visit, I picked up 3 ARC copies of books I'd wanted to read, and in return was just asked to donate a dollar per book to the Aloha Library. On my next visit, I brought in my teaching id card and got to pick out $30 worth of books for my classroom. That was enough for a dozen books, all popular/current titles. So generous! I also overheard the employee helping another customer not just find a particular author, but print out for her a list of the writer's works, and note for her which were in a series and which were stand-alones. read more
