After much searching and calling moving companies, my boyfriend decided on Powell Express movers. Roger said he would show up to our apartment between 4-5 for an estimate. Although he didn't show up until 5:30, he gave me a full report on how long it would take (proce breakdown etc) , some extra corners I could cut to make the process go faster and was a very up front guy. I liked his no BS attitude, and the way he treated my cat. We set up an appointment for that Saturday. Roger, Justin, and James came to move our apartment yesterday right when they said they would (8:15 for a quote of 8-9). They got right to work moving the boxes downstairs and then the big items (three couches, big dressers and a queen bed). They took care of all of our items, packed them tightly into their giant truck and set off for our new place! The only break I saw them take was to wipe the sweat from their brows! Very hard working guys, and the no BS attitude showed again. The unloading process was fast, efficient and safe, protecting our flooring with wooden panels. They asked us where we wanted the big items and seemed a little relieved when I told them to just stack all the boxes in the living room. Overall these guys were courteous, efficient and effective. I would highly recommend them for your next move. They charged $125 per hour for three guys which was more than any other company but they did such a great job it was definitely worth it. (By the way Roger quoted 3 hours for the load and half that time for the unload. They finished in 3.5 hours total!) Thanks aging guys! read more

This is the most professional moving service I have used in my 7 years of living in sf bay area. The are efficient, professional, friendly, and very reasonably priced. The day before our move Roger visited out place, surveyed the apt, gave us some tips for saving money during the move, and showed up on time the next DAT. Their estimate was reasonable, and they were prompt and courteous. Rodger had the bookcase moved within the next 24 hours no damage to the bookshelf or any of our walls. Impressive. We hired Powell Express to move a two bedroom condo into a townhouse from one end of Sunnyvale to the other.. The move involved a ridiculous number of stairs. Roger came out and gave an estimate and I hired him. Nothing was broken and they took care with a my valuable pieces of furniture. It was painless. The move came in under the estimate by $150. Also, they really hustled. Having dealt with several other movers I was surprised that I was not overcharged,surcharged, fuel charged, or other hidden charged. I originally came here an left a bad review, but in hindsight I was taking out a lot of frustration through a yelp review... not cool. I apologize sincerely to Powell Express Moving company for not being a better person in this aspect, and for the amount of time it has taken to update this review. Roger took on the moving job I gave him on extremely short notice, and him and his teammate got me all moved in. While we had a couple hiccups, considering that moving is extremely hard work, especially with few people, it all went very smoothly. Roger took care of our belongs and has a very cheerful personality which made moving day less stressful. We hire Roger after receiving some good references. He was all nice and warm before he reached our place with his truck. What had taken 4 hours in an earlier move, turned out to be around 8 hours. They were clearly unprofessional and took their own sweet time about moving stuff. At the end, i tried to sit down and explain my displeasure to Roger. His response was "So, sue me". I used Powell Express based on a close friend recommendation. I could not have been more pleased. We moved a one bed room apt from Sunnyvale to Santa Clara. The rate was 3 people for $100/hour with $20/flight of stairs. The actual move took 4 hours. This was very reasonable compared to the other options I originally pursued. My first impression was great, we talked to Roger in person and he was very personable, friendly and professional. His two aids were very quiet but also very friendly. The move went quickly. I was particularly impressed by their equipment. They brought a wooden pallet to our front door, loaded all the boxes onto it, wrapped it in shrink wrap, moved it to the truck with a machine, and then lifted the entire pallet onto the truck using a lift built into the truck. The move was very efficient and really minimized the probability of things getting broke. Our "to" apt was on the 3rd floor winding up tight stairs. They dropped off the pallets at the base of the stairs and hauled up my stuff by hand. They moved everything as fast as I could reasonably expect. They worked really hard and efficiently. The only complaint I have is that the edges of our couch got dirty (from dirty hands). Not docking any stars since it came right out with upholstery cleaner. If Roger is reading this, I recommend having your aids use gloves when handling furniture. All in all, I was very pleased with Powell express. I will definitely use them again in the future. No hassle at all. Give yourself a favor and at least call these guys and get a quote. I'm sure you'll be sold too. read more

After a lot of research on yelp I picked Powell Express to help us with our move. We rent and we move a lot so I've had my fair share of experiences with movers but this was just downright unpleasant. So anyway we spoke to Roger who gave us a fair estimate of the time required to complete the move and cost which was a little higher than the other people I spoke to but I wanted a hassle free move and if it takes a few more $$ to do it, I'm game. It all started out pretty well. Roger came right on time with another employee who was very nice and started moving out our boxes and furniture. He then started moving our couch. Both my husband and I were watching him load it onto his truck. As he was balancing the couch on it's two side legs, he decided to pivot it and then lean it forward on such an angle that caused one of the legs to crack. A crack so loud, that both my husband and I heard standing outside the truck. So we ask him about it, and he gets all defensive on us and tell us that the our couch is of an inferior quality!!! My husband told him that its fine, sh** happens but you either repair that for us or give us some form of reimbursement. Roger then continues to tell us that our couch was cracked before and that he didnt even do it. WHAT??? we were right there when it happened. He goes on to create a big hue and cry about this with very very disrespectful words even going to the extent of implying that we were trying to get out of paying him. Roger was dishonest, rude and arrogant. I thought if I payed a little bit more I'd get better service but that rule doesn't hold for this company. Amusing response, but it still doesn't make these guys any better at moving. I've moved often as a result of job changes in different states, getting married and having kids, never been kicked out. Suggesting that I would fire movers in the middle of a move if they weren't good is just nonsense. Everyone knows it would be impossible to get movers on the spot with no advance notice, so you're stuck with whoever you book - even MORE of a reason not to take a chance on these guys. I just called to get a quote from the owner and he was very rude, and unprofessional. I was trying to get clarification on rates and insurance. He was very short and rude. I am a business owner and if I talked to my client's that way I would not be in business. Customer service is key when owning your own business. I call this company after reading some reviews. The person who answer the call was Roger. He told me the company doesn't give quotes over the phone and wanted to schedule an appointment to come out and give an estimate. He asked me when I plan to move and I said depending on what their availability is. He started to sound irritated, maybe he was working on something or maybe I asked too many questions. I had a sense he was getting frustrated with me as he asked some basic questions. Moving is already difficult, calling movers to get a quote is harder and it's just makes things harder when people on the other side of the phone don't appear to care about doing business with you. What great customer service, from start to finish. I explained that I only wanted a move within my house. I had already called about 8 moving companies and they weren't interested. We are finished with a remodel, so I had to have some large pieces moved into place that I had been storing in other rooms. The piece I was most worried about was my antique armoire, about 7' x 4'. But Roger assured me that they had never broken anything. Roger & Justin arrived on time. That in itself is noteworthy because we live in the Santa Cruz mountains & I would not expect a company in Sunnyvale to correctly anticipate how much time it would take to get here. They didn't complain about the drive or finding the house, which AGAIN is unusual. I estimated that it would take about 2 hours to move about 8 big pieces. They really hustled and were done in an hour. There were no additional charges, it was exactly as quoted on the phone, which I thought was actually too little for coming all the way from Sunnyvale & working for an hour, so I gave them a $40 tip. After reading the many good reviews on Yelp, and viewing their website, I gave Powell Express a call. I had a 600 lb piece of woodworking machinery to move. I spoke with Roger, who was initially reluctant but agreed to go look at the item to see if he could move it. He gave me an initial quote of a 3 hr minimum, which I accepted. After Roger saw the item, he let me know that he could move it for half the price he originally quoted. He scheduled the move for the next day and delivered the item safely. He had a large truck with a really cool lift gate. Roger was friendly and polite at all times. I would definitely use Powell Express again, and will recommend them to all my friends. read more

I hired these guys to help us with a difficult apartment move recommended by one of their former customers. In that case, they moved all of their possessions smoothly and when a lantern (?) was broken, Roger took it to his Father's for repair and returned it to them with brand new glass. That's pretty fantastic, in my opinion, so based on that and the fact that Roger is a really relaxed, nice and friendly guy, we hired them for our move. Roger also loves animals, which is a bonus if you have nervous pets around. Along with two helpers, they painstakingly moved all of our junk (and it is a LOT of junk), wrapping things and just generally ensuring that everything got safely to our new destination. They worked really hard and were pleasant to be around and made the move, if not fun, a lot better than it would have otherwise been. Of all of our billions of things, only one photo collage was broken. Since we wrapped it, apparently the insurance wouldn't cover it BUT Roger took it away and returned it with brand new glass better than new. These guys are definitely gems in a pretty shady industry, and very generous with box deliveries and bubble wrap. The only possible negative is that for a big move (more than one bedroom, or packrats with a one bedroom + storage) the truck could be a little bigger. Don't be scared by weird and cryptic reviews- this company is run by real, normal, nice, local people and if anyone has any real complaints you would think they would be specific about it. *shrug* I would definitely hire them again, especially if we trim down our possessions so that they would all fit in one truck load. read more

Even with extra fees for stairs and an extremely heavy sofa bed, the cost was far more reasonable than any other quote I received. The two people that helped him were very friendly and took great care with our belongings, never complained, and even helped me sort items into different groups as they brought them into the new place after seeing that I was organizing them by room. Roger and his movers did a great job!!! We moved from one apartment complex to another in Sunnyvale and it took 4 hours. They put the boxes on pallets and load onto the truck to save a great deal of time. They worked fast and steady. The only break was when they were driving. I highly recommend them to everyone who needs a mover!!! The also wrapped all the glass and stuff in blankets. They have wardrobe boxes that worked out great!!! read more

I left a msg for a return call mainly because the reviews I read were great. Unfortunately, the person who returned my call may have had a bad day or had too much business already. This person (who could have been the owner) was not too happy that I could not supply all information from the first 2 mins. I started with stating that I am asking for his rates for a move within a 5 mile radius. When I paused and he said that he needed more information (of course!) with what needed to be moved and where of which I had ready answers for, I just quickly asked clarification again as to which company he represented and he said 'that's ok' and hung up. This person must assume that callers move at a regular basis and has no patience with having to take that extra step to assist the possible client. We never even got there. I have made other calls to other moving companies and those calls were just fine. So, this company may really be a good one, of which I will not know and frankly don't need to know. read more
