He explained wonderfully every aspect of the move. He gave what proved to be a very accurate estimate of how long the move would take. Another company I called gave an hourly rate but did not come to my place so had no idea what needed to be moved or how long it would take and thus how much it would cost. After speaking with Roger I was confident that all of my belongings would be handled in the most careful, professional and efficient way. I attempted to get a quote for my in-state move about four hours away and this is the conversation that followed Unfortunately it looks like will be going with someone else and based off these reviews the rest of you should as well. The sad part is that I can't even get a review out of it and he told me it's in about 1500 mark dollars but wouldn't give me any more information and refuses to be a professional. How can I trust someone to move my precious belongings and memories when they're going to be screwy on the page where I asked for a quote?? I found this company through yelp. A few things I found useful and I want to keep it simple and precise: Price: $105/hr with 3 people - based on my research, it's reasonable, most will charge your over $130 for 3 people move. I was concerned about the "charges including travel time to reach my house" and not start at the door. It's something you can negotiate. Pros: 1. Seems honest, my friends mentioned they lost stuff during move, missing boxes or lost valuable. These guys were pretty straight up guy, we didn't lose any valuables. 2. Hard working. They run through the job, they don't drag their feets nor take their time. 3. Well equiped. They got quite a few things to help them move professionally and efficiently. 4. Friendly staff. Roger, the boss may not seem friendly without speaking, but he's actually easy going guy, he just very serious about getting it done. Cons: 1. We got a few of our furnitures scratches, not intentionally of course. However, there are one particular individual who's older and is not as strong and have incurred most of the damages. We have one broken furniture, a few scratches on the hardwood floor and few scratches on a few wood furnitures. Also a few dented wall and scratches as well. To be fair, they can be more careful, but it's moving, there are alwayas accidents. 2. The truck is not huge... it's sufficient. Thus, when stacking furnitures, they can be too aggressive and that's when some of the damages happened. Again, can't expect perfection but you can pay more attention and advice them. 3. There was also communication issue. They were scheduled to be here but were late for over an hour and turned out a miscommunication. Nevertheless, communication with Roger is not instant. I suggest before the move, email details and nail down starting time to make sure there aren't no surprises. All in all, I was happy withe the move. I have to be reasonable about the damage. My wife doesn't share that view. read more

I feel an update is due, even though this business still provides 5-star service, because we've hired them for something different than before: moving between an on-site storage container and the house. They're great even if they aren't transporting belongings from one geographic location to another! We have been renovating our home and storing most of our things in PODS in the meantime. Of course we called Powell during the times we've needed help moving stuff back and forth, because we had such a great experience with them before. That will make at least four times working with them within one year. When it comes to allowing people into our space, we have learned to only give repeat business to absolutely awesome people, so that should tell you how great they are. Their calendar is filling up for moving season, so if you anticipate needing to move, whether it's from one home to another or from a storage unit to your garage, it's ideal to give them advance notice. Although, we've been very fortunate in that we haven't always been able to do that and they've made themselves available for us! read more

We called Roger (the owner) to move some big pieces of furniture (dining tables, beds, futons, etc) from Santa Clara to Sunnyvale. We have no complaints about these guys. They did the standard things of wrapping furniture that might be damaged or scratch other surfaces, covering walk ways that might be damaged, as well as adding ramps when necessary. They had all the tools and figured out how to move things quickly and efficiently. And all of this was done at a very affordable price. Note: Don't be discouraged if they sound rude over the phone, they're probably in the middle of a move. They're also email people, so if you call them and they don't respond, feel free to shoot them an email. It makes it easier to specify time/date and special needs for the move anyway. read more

We just completed a cross-country move to Mountain View and all of our stuff was in portable storage units. We decided to contract Powell Express after seeing their reviews here on Yelp. Roger was easy to get in touch with and he gave me a reasonable quote to get our two crates of stuff up to the third floor of our apartment complex. There was a 3-hour minimum (which we almost used to completion!) and he brought along one assistant. Roger was able to accommodate several last minute changes and contingencies associated with our move. First, the moving company delivered our crates much earlier than anticipated and Roger was able to adjust his schedule to help us out. Second, the moving company dropped the crates off ACROSS the parking lot and out on the street. Roger quickly adapted to the circumstances and loaded the stuff from our crates into his truck and then drove from the street and across the parking lot to our building where he and Justin then unloaded and brought everything up to the third floor - still within the three hours. Bottom line: Fast, efficient, and hard working. I would definitely use them again. read more

What a great and professional team of movers! I have never used a moving company before, so I called a lot of local companies. Roger's company was recommended to me by someone else in the same business. He came out to do an estimate for an apartment move - which a lot of other companies weren't planning to do - and in the end, the price was very close to what he quoted. A couple of attributes of his team should be especially noted. They are fast, very professional, and very courteous. There was no sitting around and wasting time. They showed up right on time, came in and bada bing bada boom: the truck was loaded and soon after unloaded at our final destination. I researched many moving companies before deciding to go with Roger. SO glad I did! We identified a new place that was coming available within a month. So I had one month to pack up all of our stuff (we lived there for seven years and had accumulated TONS of stuff) in less than a month. That being said, I got a lot of packing done, but the place was a mess and there was not a clear path for movers to come in and do their thing the right way. This was my main concern last night when I fell asleep, too tired to pack or move stuff anymore. Roger and Daniel came on time this morning, and were super patient as we had some slight delays on our end. They were the model of efficiency, and absolutely courteous and professional the entire time. They worked through what little space I had left available for them and did their thing. Remember how I said I only had a month to pack stuff? Well, that did not include dusting the living room shelf, TV stand, etc. Roger dusted them all before moving them out for us. Absolutely amazing. The two of them moved everything efficiently - they were focused and cared about our new space....making sure not to scrape the walls and even covering the floors. They moved all the boxes according to the rooms that I labelled on the boxes, and even had to move some boxes twice due to my poor planning and readiness for today's move. There were no complaints or judgments! I ***HIGHLY*** recommend Roger and his team. He services all of the bay, and I believe even up to Sac. His hourly rate is extremely reasonable. I did not expect to get such professionalism and high quality, paying the rate he quoted me. I am still reeling from the excellent work and already thinking about sending him a gift basket too. Dont forget to tip your movers! I was disappointed to find (after we tipped them) that they werent expecting a tip because many people dont tip them. We moved from Mountain View to Santa Clara and hired Roger and two guys to move practically everything we considered to not be junk for us. Roger came over a week before to check out our place and gave us an estimate - $105/3 guys. Like Yelp says, they supply free bubble wrap, which was quite convenient for us since we had a lot of glassware and other fragile stuff. They came over at 8:30 in the morning and loaded all our boxes quickly and efficiently. We had planned on packing the last minute stuff while they were loading things on the truck. Little did we know, they did a much faster job loading then we did packing. Even with the Ikea furniture and other big stuff we had around the house, they did a great job of rubber banding or bubbling them so that everything was nice and secular... and safe! They never stopped for a break and just kept working and working and working. I'm used to seeing movers on the street resting or relaxing, but I swear these guys did not stop. Loading everything in Mountain View to unloading everything (in a fairly fashionable manner) in Santa Clara took roughly 4 hours. After having professional movers, I don't think we can ever go back to having a moving party with friends. For one thing, we would get a huge headache trying to figure out how to put our furniture back together. read more

The dust has settled, almost, from our move from Sunnyvale to San Jose. Roger & his team did a fantastic job moving our belongings. Like other reviews stated, Roger provided great customer service during the initial estimate visit and throughout the move day. He provided extra packing materials and wardrobe boxes days prior to the move which were a HUGE help, at no extra charge. His estimate on our move was pretty spot on, totaling 6 hours, using 3 guys including himself. only reason it went an hour over was we had too many boxes to move, so it took more room than he had in his truck. Putting our boxes on pallets worked great.. Our furniture has no damage that i am aware of, and nothing broke. They didn't take any breaks other than possibly 5 mins during the unloading at the new location. overall great experience. on time, within budget. we gave the two guys a decent tip and thanked them for their hard work which they were very modest and thankful for the business. I realized my labor day move plans were less than solid (Turns out all those people that volunteered to help move weren't actually going to be around!). So the Friday afternoon before the long weekend, I gave Powell Express a call on a whim to see what their rate and available was for the next week. Roger came out to my house a half hour later to give me a (very reasonable) estimate and we booked the move for two days later. He was very friendly, explained the entire process to me, and the estimate he gave was very accurate. I really appreciated Roger's no-bull way of doing business. Moved back in November with Roger and debated leaving a post or not, as I didn't want to bash his business, but he is not a nice person so I'm going to leave my honest review. Roger showed up over an hour late. Didn't move all of our things because they didn't fit, even though he came out and saw everything I had prior to moving day. His solution was to leave it all sit and we could come back to get it later on our own. First, I'm not leaving my stuff sit out in the rain, and second, I am paying YOU to move my things! Thankfully my neighbor stored my things in their garage until we were able to come back and get the rest. They finished up at 3:32 and he said he would have to round that to 345 and then it would be about a 20 minute drive back to Dubuque so that would round to 415. So he charged me for almost an hour extra with all his "rounding" and when I tried to discuss how that wasn't right and he claimed "that's just the way it is" and was very rude. Would not recommend him if u are on a time frame or want all of ur things to actually be moved! read more

I found this company on Craigslist and called to get a quote to move a refrigerator. I told Roger Powell that I needed to have a built-in refrigerator that was 36"Wx24"Dx84"H and weighed 400-500 lbs moved from from Saratoga to San Francisco. I thought that this was sufficient info to get a quote, but Roger insisted that he needed to know the brand name to provide a quote. His quote of $250 was competitive with other quotes I received and I would have hired him if his insurance coverage met the requirements of my condo association in San Francisco. However, when I asked him for more details on his insurance coverage, so I could compare it with my condo's requirements, he hung up on me. Yes, he hung up on me. I was stunned at his rudeness & lack of professionalism. I called him back to explain that I needed the insurance info to ensure that his coverage met my condo's requirements, and he continued to be rude. I expressed my disappointment in his lack of professionalism and told him that I was going to post a negative review on Yelp. He called me back about a minute later and told me that he has the right to refuse service to anyone and that he was going on vacation for the next 2 weeks and would therefore would not be able to work with me. This negative interaction was SOOO uncalled for and motivated me to create a Yelp account just so that I could share my experience w/ Yelp users. It is a real shame that Powell personel are so rude on the phone, because many of the reviews seem to indicate that the company does a good job on the move after they are hired. read more

I hired the Powell Express movers to aid me in moving from my sunnyvale apartment to my new San Jose apartment. These guys did an excellent job. They packed out the sunnyvale apartment in about an hour and a half and after a brief travel time, were able to move back into the new apartment in about 2 hours. After being recommended by several friends wh had just moved we tried Roger, and he was great! He was really nice, and surprisingly the folks he brought with him were really nice and friendly too, I felt comfortable talking to all of them. They were fast, and innexpensive, and worked hard. The only minus was their stacking method is a little hard on the boxes at the bottom of the pile. After much searching and calling moving companies, my boyfriend decided on Powell Express movers. Roger said he would show up to our apartment between 4-5 for an estimate. Although he didn't show up until 5:30, he gave me a full report on how long it would take (proce breakdown etc) , some extra corners I could cut to make the process go faster and was a very up front guy. I liked his no BS attitude, and the way he treated my cat. We set up an appointment for that Saturday. Roger, Justin, and James came to move our apartment yesterday right when they said they would (8:15 for a quote of 8-9). They got right to work moving the boxes downstairs and then the big items (three couches, big dressers and a queen bed). They took care of all of our items, packed them tightly into their giant truck and set off for our new place! The only break I saw them take was to wipe the sweat from their brows! Very hard working guys, and the no BS attitude showed again. The unloading process was fast, efficient and safe, protecting our flooring with wooden panels. They asked us where we wanted the big items and seemed a little relieved when I told them to just stack all the boxes in the living room. Overall these guys were courteous, efficient and effective. I would highly recommend them for your next move. They charged $125 per hour for three guys which was more than any other company but they did such a great job it was definitely worth it. (By the way Roger quoted 3 hours for the load and half that time for the unload. They finished in 3.5 hours total!) Thanks aging guys! read more
