I would give it 5 stars for the historical significance, but 5 stars for the actual ambience of the place.
This property belonged to the first mayor of Philadelphia after the USA was firmed--and he was also the last mayor under theBritish regime! This is also the place where revolutionary meetings and important social celebrations of the elite of the time happened. Powel's neighbor and friend, George Washington visited often, danced in their ballroom, where Ben Franklin played the musical instruments...
It's cool to learn about the place, and through it, the history, geography, and the architecture of the time. The Philly landmark association has done a good job or restoring the property and opening it up for events and tours.
We went for a cool garden cocktail party and the kick off event of the Fringe Arts festival, and got to fear amazing opera and Broadway tunes by talents amidst great paintings and history.
Be on the look out for events and catch a good tour of the place--you won't regret it!
Oh, I give it 4 stars, because in the end, it looks pretty normal--like many of the other row houses in society hill...albeit with a fancy fireplace and historical paintings. Don't expect anything fancy--this ain't the Queen's England after all! ;) read more
