Most of the headstone are beyond readable due to extended age, A unique place to visit with an interesting story from the guide that highlights the life of Benjamin Franklin. This is located right downtown so its easy to get to from pretty much any other touristy place, and it can also be seen clear as the sun from the hop on/hop off tour bus. It goes right by it. After visiting Independence Hall, take a few minutes and walk over to Christ Church Burial Ground. You can see the grave of Benjamin Franklin - one of the Founding Fathers of the United States and one of the most influential intellectuals of his time. Both Benjamin Franklin and his wife Deborah are buried here at Christ Church Burial Ground. Four other signers of the Declaration of Independence and many other historical leaders from the past are also buried here. The Burial Ground is open to the public for a small fee. If you don't want to pay the fee, you can see Benjamin Franklin's grave through the fence on Arch Street near 5th Street. It is a little difficult to get a good photo through the bars, but you can still see the headstone pretty well. I love history and have stopped here a few times to pay my respects. We were on vacation and decided to come here. If you go into the cemetery it's like $5 a person and small kids are free. It is a small cemetery but very old. My son loves his so this was a cool place to see . If you don't want to pay you can see the grave from the street there's bars but you get a good look. Well let me tell you this was an experience. My husband and I got to the grave outside the cemetery and seeing that it was very difficult to snap a picture of it through the fence without fear of dropping my phone we decided to hoof it over to Christ church, pay the admission and go back to tour the burial grounds. It had just stopped raining so we trekked about 3-4 blocks to find the church. Once inside I was asked if I wanted to tour the church. I replied that I wanted to pay to go to the cemetery. The lady replied "the cemetery's closed due to rain." I reminded her that it had stopped raining about an hour ago but she told me that with the grounds still being wet there were liability issues with people falling on the wet pavement and downed limbs. She told me I could view it from the street. DUH, I just did that. Oh well. She told me I could go around back of the church and see the other notables buried there. I thanked her and headed back. So I slowly tried to get a picture of the stone. It was very difficult to read but did the best I can. I was glad at least to see where the Franklin family is buried. One way or another I managed to get a picture through the fence. Yes the grave is covered with pennies. I was about to throw one but didn't want to run the risk of losing something over there. The pennies are there for Franklin's saying "a penny saved is a penny earned." Man if he knew how many pennies were on his tombstone in a day he would have been rich!! There are historical markers in the area to help you understand the site. My advice is to call the church if you wish to tour the burial grounds to make sure it is open. Otherwise, save yourself the trouble and snap a picture of it through the fence. You'll have a photo keepsake of where a notable founding father is interred. I'm glad at least they put his tomb near the street for people to view. read more

Amazing to know Benjamin Franklin rests here. It was great that we were able to see his grave from the main street, as the cemetery was closed. Wish though that the cemetery/tour was open early since we couldn't experience the tour or inside of the graveyard. read more

This is one of Philadelphia must see sites. It's situated between the Betsey Ross House and the National Constitution Center. The grave where Mr Franklin and his wife lay was close to the street so we were able to stay next to it from the sidewalk and pay our respects. There were other people there and many threw pennies. I will need to look up the meaning to that.. lol I'll definitely be back/stop by when I'm in the area. read more

It is odd to review a grave, but it's also not the first time that I have done this. Benjamin Franklin's Grave is kind of a hot spot along the sidewalk. I walked around here a few times for my days in the city and there was always someone there. There are two ways to go about viewing this grave. You can simply view it from the sidewalk from behind the metal gate in the brick wall. This is how a lot of people view it. The other way to view it is to pay a fee to enter either the cemetery that the grave resides in, or from another nearby site to see. If you do this way of viewing it, you will be able to view it how ever you want and have unobscured views and angles of the grave. Along with Benjamin Franklin's grave you will be able to view his wife's and children's graves as well. A lot of people that pass by here have thrown coins onto to the grave. Majority of them appear to be pennies but other coins were visible as well. Definitely worth at least a look if you are making your way about Philadelphia. On either side of the fence protecting the gravesite were brick walls and columns with honorary and informational plaques. It's really difficult to rate someone's grave especially is someone as famous as Benjamin Franklin. But I only gave it four stars because you actually have to pay to go into the cemetery to visit his grave. It was just a sad point where they have to start charging for people and families to go in and visit their own history. It's just wrong. I had five children and I would never have been able to take them anywhere if I had to pay for every single museum. It's really sad for the families now. I love seeing this but I wouldn't pay to go in either. They do have a plaque outside and you can look into the fence to see the grave. For some reason people throw money on it and I don't know why.
