The only problem I have with…read morecharity shops is that some of them are like this particular War on Want--that is to say, they are wanting. This was a bit of a disappointment. There was only a small range of stock (though I know that's not entirely the fault of the shop as people need to donate!), and most of what I saw did not look that nice. I wish that more charity shops would stock OLD used books (not just recently discarded best sellers, or trashy romance.) They don't have to be first editions or even remotely valuable--they are just prettier, and sometimes mean we poor people can finally get hold of some of those out of print treasures we've been dying to find. Even so, much of the fault lies with those who donate. You need to donate to charity shops. They need good stock. And you need to donate high quality items that you would actually expect someone to buy!

The Lady Lever Art Gallery owes its existence to the fortune amassed by the 1st Lord Leverhulme…read morefrom his soap and detergents business, better known to us as Lever Bros. Lord Leverhulme actually began purchasing art in the late 19th century to advertise his 'Sunlight' soap brand, and from this commercial beginning he developed a substantial collection of British 18th and 19th century art, an extensive collection of ceramics (including Classical items as well as early Wedgwood), tapestries and antique furniture. The gallery itself was built in 1922 in memory of Leverhulme's wife. Set in the lovely surroundings of Port Sunlight village - itself an example of enlightened philanthropy, as it was built to provide high quality housing for Leverhulme's workers - the gallery is small, but the quality of the exhibits is high. The paintings include items by Sir Joshua Reynolds, Stubbs, Turner and Constable, and a substantial number of pre-Raphaelite works, with pictures by Leighton, Millais, Burne-Jones, Rossetti and Holman-Hunt. The ceramics include an outstanding collection of Wedgwood, high quality items of Chinese porcelain from the Ming, Qing and Kangxi periods, and Roman and Greek sculptures and vases. Other collections include some late mediaeval tapestries and English furniture from the 16th-19th centuries, considered the definitive period of fine English cabinet-making. The gallery has a small cafe and surprisingly good provision for children, including an 'artbase' trolley containing lots of materials for dressing up and drawing, and a selection of children's work sheets and gallery trails. The site is a short walk from Bebington railway station on the Merseyrail network (14 minutes from Liverpool Central, trains every 15 minutes), and has ample car parking on site. It makes for a delightful afternoon excursion from Liverpool, and admission is free.

Cooking equipment, lots of food and drink and random items such as key ring mobile phone chargers and cushion covers. It's a step down from the likes of Home Bargain, but it's a great store for a bargain none the less. You can probably get a month's shopping for the same budget as you would spend on a weeks in a high street supermarket, therefore I would thoroughly recommend this place to students and poor people :)

The stock is categorised throughout with some key items on display enabling customers to locate their required product quickly and easily as well as allowing for a much more pleasant shopping environment. I don't think the stock varies greatly from store to store, however this shop seems more modern than that in the city centre for example with bright bold colourful cushions, curtains and bedding on display rather than net curtains, tea towels and blankets, of course this may be simply due to the display rather than the stock actually available as I am sure the latter are also available in this store.

It has been owned by Debenhams since 1976, yet the store is fairly old being founded in 1780, while it doesn't seem to compare to the older department stores in London, it still is a fairly nice branch, you can enter the store through street-level or through the Grosvenor Shopping Centre. The store is pretty old and you can tell that through shopping inside, they have random sets of steps and ramps all over, so it isn't just one straight/flat level, so do be careful where you're walking to avoid tripping. They had a huge clearance sale on my visit, due to Debenhams' facing difficulties and having to close many of their stores, including this one, I still found many of their prices to be high even after the discount, I found the promotional offers to be inconsistent and it was hard to tell what item costs what as each part of the store/product range would have a different % off. The store did seem a little messy, but it did have some good products overall and it is nice to see they haven't ignored the history, it's a shame to see this store earmarked for closure as although it isn't perfect, it is and remains a nice addition to the town centre. 3*

Having an off licence and a general store all in one means that when you are visiting for a drink for a night in or even before a night out you can pick up the essentials you need, perhaps for a drunken munch later and as a student this is something you will be very grateful of. And I understand why such a shop is popular as it is so easy to see why. By no surprise, I am a fan of Poundland myself since I do often find items here that suit my simple everyday needs, all of course for £1. Therefore you can't really complain about things being cheap quality because products are meant to be a basic standard. But what you do get normally without disappointment is items like shampoo, quick snacks and drinks.
