At long last York has it's very own Chinese supermarket!…read more Before chi yip opened, I had to trek all the way to Leeds city centre to stock up on all my essential Chinese cookery ingredients! There is a wide range of exotic looking fruit and veg at chi yip, some you won't recognise, some you will! you can also pick up lovely stir fry essentials such as delicious pak choi. The freezer cabinets have a wide range of precooked dim sums that you can take home and cook yourself (usually steam or deep fry) As well as frozen meat and fish. You can also buy sacks of rice, it's much cheaper to buy like this if you have room to store it!! There is a good selection of canned and jarred goods, some really interesting items, quite a number of them I've never heard of, but many that I have and would love to have a go cooking with! I would say if your new to Chinese cookery, but want to be experimental than have a recipe in mind and take the list of ingredients with you, otherwise you might get a bit over whelmed at how much 'stuff' there actually is! Last but not least is the fish and meat counter, where there is a member of staff on hand to serve you - there is also tanks of live crabs and lobster so you can literally choose which poor creature you want to take home and cook

Boots on Coney Street is the largest of the many branches that Boots have in York's city centre. It…read moreappears to have had a minor refurbishment recently, so the store does look fresh and modern, compared to some other Boots stores which are going on a bit now. As well as the Pharmacy that you find in every Boots store, there is also an Optician and Hearing Care facility. Prices are competitive, other than the food/drink section, which I always find to be rather expensive at Boots compared to rival chains, as they rarely seem to have any offers in that section, combined with higher prices before promotional offers even come into play too. The selection is reasonable, the staff were friendly enough and this is a good Boots location overall that I would return to on future visits to York. 4*

We went to this Boots Pharmacy today ("pharmacy" being a huge understatement, as the store is large and it's very much like an American chain store) and bought the item we needed. The man who rang up our purchase (in the pharmacy section) was SUPER-friendly and we had a delightful conversation with him. Also; the store is well laid-out & very clean, and the selection looked very good.

Oriental Express is a nice, simple little mini-mart, but sells an extensive range of products at…read morecheap prices. If you want any kind of noodle/sauce/drink then this is the best place in York to find it. The staff are lovely, and it's a bit more welcoming than the competition in York (the Chinese supermarket in the city centre is okay, but overpriced, and the Korean mini-mart in town is rubbish now they've (temporarily?) closed the top floor). There are a wide variety of different countries' staple ingredients available, including; Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, China, Korea, Thailand. I have to recommend the 'Animal Biscuits' found at the cashier's end of the aisle between the last aisle and the freezer section. They cost around £1.75 but are in a dangerously big bag. Once you open the bag you won't stop until you get a massive sugar rush. Actually, scratch that, avoid the Animal Biscuits at all costs! Parking: On Hull Road, right outside, or if this is full, which it often is, turn right (if heading into town from the East) at the lights onto Melrosegate and take the first right into Matmer Court. There is ample parking there, but there's no lighting, so avoid if alone at night (although at night the Hull Road parking should be free anyway). Free. Overall: Reasonably clean, good selection, helpful staff, cheap, maybe a little small, could do with selling more fresh fruit and vegetables. Note: They do take cards, but only on purchases over £5.

From the owner: We are an oriental food supermarket, specializing in Chinese, Thai, Japanese, Korean and Thai Food.read more
