They are very friendly and helpful and when…read morea box that I was sending overseas was 2cm too big for one price bracket (and would have cost me £15 more) they sold me tape and leant me scissors so that I could cut the box down smaller. They don't do passports, drivers licences or any other fancy stuff but they do do sending things in the post. They never have that big a queue and seem to know most of the regulars who use the post office. They also sell some birthday cards, wrapping paper and all sorts of different sizes of boxes.

They have the ticket machine so you can sit and wait rather than queue. Unless you're there for ID or biometric services in which case you need to stand in line. There's quite a few self service machines as well which are quick and easy and they usually have staff around if you need help with them. Usual selection of envelopes and other posting things. Also has travel money & insurance services. Functional, staff have always been helpful and friendly on the few times I've been in.

Queues are large as you'd expect, and if you're sending anything of value you need to accept it will almost certainly be lost, damaged, or most likely stolen by the morally empty, alcoholic postman, but that's life.

One…read morewas for New York, so not your standard stampage, and I wasn't sure the other still counted as "Letter" as it was quite thick (17 pages. I ramble. You know that.) I wombled in at lunchtime and was surprised by how short the queue was. I'd thought that somewhere this central would be jam-packed, especially at lunchtime, but not so, and the queue was moving along at a fair lick, so kudos to the folks at the windows. I, however, poor soul that I am, fished out my envelopes and was instantly barked at by a lady on patrol. "STAMPS? YOU WANT STAMPS?" - and she hustled me out of line. There's an express queue for postage, it seems, of which I was unaware; my regular post office is the one on St Mary's Street - infinitely more compact and manual - so I wasn't used to the idea. Oh, provincial me. It was helpful of her, but she was also slightly alarming and officious in her manner, which kind of made me want to take these lengthy epistles, toils and spoils of my aching hand and brain, and run for the wind. "I won't let her hurt you," I would whisper as we fled down to the shore... But fortunately, reason prevailed, and I was swiftly served with the correct postage. A point here and there at the card machine and she bustled off to find somebody else. I feel a warm fuzziness about post offices not dissimilar to that which I feel about Christmas, and so I wasn't equipped to deal with this mild intimidation. Trying to claw back some of that festive posty spirit, I pulled my international stamp for the New York missive out of the machine, and bounced excitedly. I'm no avid philatelist but I do love to see a pretty stamp with a picture on it. "Look, it's all colourful and pretty!" I squeaked to the customer at that moment replacing me at the machine, and pointed at my picturesque postage stamp. I was met with a derisive stare. Oh. Not that kind of post office then. Still, it was light, it was quiet, and I got everything done quickly that I needed to do. I wouldn't avoid it if I were nearby, but all else being equal, I would choose the queues and jovially messy jiffy bag walls at teeny weeny St Mary's Street over the efficient brusqueness of Frederick Street.

It's not that small, a good neighbourhood size post office that is. The staff here are always super friendly, especially the ones who man the cashier on your right as you enter, from which you can purchase anything from the store as well as stamps if you don't want to que for the post office clerks. There are cards- the average of any post office as well as useful folders etc. I can't exactly say I am a fan of any post office, but this one is surely a good one.

This is a family run post office by all accounts and there are generally two or three guys behind the counter, although usually only one is serving. The service can be quite slow depending on which staff member serves you but the staff are friendly enough. I wouldn't wish to visit for anything too complicated, however, and it is likely that this branch is too small to deal with things like Car Tax, etc. However, this branch was one of the ones recently saved from closure and so it is important to use it in order to justify this decision.

It's easy to walk past with all these distractions, as it has a pretty small door way so pay attention! Ofcourse I don't need to go into detail about what can be done at the post office, but I will say the peeps over there are quite friendly (apart from one lady, but I think she just doesn't like my face) and you can exchange and even take out money as long as you don't have an account with RBS.

The chap with the glasses who usually manages the post-office counter is pleasant and engaging, but the other guy who mans the shop counter has the heart and manners of a lizard - one of the great many in this country who feels that customers are privileged to be in his shop rather than what they really are, his bread and butter. The stationary etc is pretty pricey compared to the (less-well stocked) Canonmills newsagent just over the bridge on Inverleith Row. I was told to wait this afternoon by the shop keeper because he was busy sorting out post (not really his job as he is not staffing the post-office part of the business), but he then turned to another customer and served her first. I found this discourtesy enough to put me off wanting to return - there are plenty of alternatives so I'll not be coming back while the lizard is employed there. Sorry Mr Postmaster!

It was here I first realized how cheap the UK post is, and it's a rare item or service that will cost over £4. At least nothing I've done (apart from express sending olive oil soap to sweden- was an emergency!) has been that pricey. It's also possible to exchange currencies, and for the unprepared folk like me that turn up at the post office with the item or letter in hand, there's a separate cashier to buy all sorts of envelopes and packaging, as well as an extensive range of greeting cards and post cards.
