Positive Direction was started in Southeast Queens as a response to a need for the youth of today to become more involved in positive endeavors rather than the negative associations rapidly growing around them. Positive Direction provides a place for youths to constructively spend their time, where they can set goals under the mature guidance of people that care and relinquish them from the misfortunes they sometimes contact throughout life. The sport of basketball is an attraction to both males and females. For young people to be successful in either requires self-discipline, hard work, and determination. Positive Direction uses basketball as a tool to promote and encourage academic excellence in their participants. Positive Direction stresses the need for higher education through mandatory study sessions, evaluation of report cards, and awards acknowledging academic achievements. Youths are encouraged to utilize the same hard work and desire they display on the court and in the studio, in the classroom. Positive Direction focuses on building character, self-confidence, establishing self-respect, promoting time management, teaching social skills, responsibility, and loyalty. Positive Direction has a well respected staff who lead by example and show how choosing practical everyday activities will lead to a more challenging and permanent lifestyle.

History

Established in 1991.

Positive Direction of Queens County, Inc. established in 1991. It was established with my desire to give back to the community and a vision to inspire those who dared to dream. I understood then and now that mutual respect, common interest of basketball and shared expectations were essential to connecting those who could lead with those who needed to follow. Since 1991, Positive Direction has grown to a staff of 20 and an impressive 230 participating student-athletes, boys and girls ranging in ages from 4 to 17.
