I can't say enough about Brooklyn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu! My husband walked in there 5 years ago looking for something my son and he could do together. Since my son was 5 at the time they would obviously be in separate classes, but my husband liked the idea of place they could go together, a studio they could share. What it became was a second home! My husband started jiu jitsu, my son the tiny tigers program. They asked me to try boxing but I politely declined. After about a year of them asking and my husband and son having so much fun and getting really fit, I decided to give it a try! And to my surprise it was so much fun and a hell of a workout! Next thing I knew it was all three of us at the dojo on a Friday night and we were loving it. What is so awesome about this studio is the love and care the instructors put into teaching and creating a community. Suddenly we were all training with people from all walks of life and it felt so nice. The neighborhood I had known for years suddenly felt bigger and I felt so much more connected. In a city where we can tend to get used to keeping to ourselves, it was nice to feel part of something. Five years later, all I can say is things continue to get better! My brother in law just joined and my son has graduated to the basic jiu jitsu class. My son is now on the mat training with his Dad and his Uncle! There's something really special about that. This dojo is for everyone, young, old, in-between, just starting to work out or seasoned athletes. The reason it is for everyone, is because of the teachers. They teach with heart, compassion and discipline. I love Brooklyn BJJ. I have been coming for about a year and a half and this dojo and the amazing community they have built has really transformed me. I came in on a lark to try Muay Thai, at the behest of a friend. Guess who stuck around and is now also doing Jui Jitsu? The adult classes are diverse - young adults, parents, older folks. And many of the parents have children that take the youth classes (they're so fun to watch!). They do private classes if you're nervous to try it in a class. Even if you don't think you are into the martial arts, the nurturing, inclusive environment fostered by the instructors is truly something I look forward to at the end of the day. They shoot people texts if they haven't been in in awhile... you may find that annoying or pressuring, but I find that encouraging actually, especially since I can tell its sincere. Instructors are aware of your progress and are constantly helping you improve. And regardless of whether you want a black belt (they tell everyone they're on that journey to black belt once they start. I found that a little intimidating but it's so much fun that it's not something I think about so much. The journey is a helluva time) its a great workout - mix of cardio and strength for Muay Thai and Jui Jitsu, but for the latter, it mixes in a great mental workout too. As Professor Skyer says, it's never too late to start. I'm so glad I did. PS. I won't mince words, it's not cheap but its not more expensive than Equinox. But its the best investment in yourself, really. I'd rather spend those dollars on making myself stronger and healthier anyway. I'd drag more of my friends here if they lived closer! read more

A warm and welcoming vibe was the first thing I experienced here. The space is not huge, but it is just the right size for the classes, and they keep it super clean and orderly. With an excellent staff of wise, experienced, and kind teachers. Great stuff! read more

This is the one dojo to go to if you have any doubts about where to begin or if this is for you. I would especially recommend it for anyone younger or older, or someone who doesn't fit a more standard mold for a person whom you could see taking martial arts. Most schools couldn't care less about who you are and just thoughtlessly create an atmosphere where people only want to compete in who can punch each other harder - this is not that place. Professor Skyer and his teachers are entirely about fostering personal growth to improve your life and connecting you to your classmates as a community instead of just giving you a workout and sending you on your way. I was only able to go for about a year before I had to move out of the country because of life, but this dojo will always be one of the places I miss most about Brooklyn! read more

Flash forward to the present... I've just started taking classes at Brooklyn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu on Columbia St. The instructors are SUPER friendly, humble, very helpful, & they know their stuff!!! As someone who is intimidated easily (& who can be extremely shy/introverted), I find the space to be inviting, educational, challenging, & supportive of the students. There's a "student creed" that we read at the end of each class that fosters positive energy & is about respecting oneself & others... Very cool! If you're a beginner like me & you want to build self-confidence, this is an awesome place to start learning BJJ martial arts. read more

I have been training at Brooklyn BJJ for almost two months and it has already become one of my favorite places in the neighborhood. The professors are extremely nice and great at what they do. Other students are very encouraging, friendly and positive. I enjoy every second of my training and I love the feeling after a great workout. Kickboxing is not only an amazing way to get in shape and learn some self-defense techniques. It also teaches discipline, gives you confidence and is a lot of fun! read more

I love this dojo! A supportive space, full of positive energy. The staff is great! Classes are awesome, and the instructors do well at making the students of all ages feel comfortable and happy --they're great motivators! Exactly what you need if you want to improve on yourself. Very encouraging environment where the staff works with you if you have any injuries, and they are always checking in. Both my body and mind has changed for the better being a student. I've been going for about 2 months and I absolutely love it. It's a great program with great people. I've never been a gym person and I don't generally like working out, so I was a bit intimidated at first, but I'm SO glad I got past that and started up here. The instructors are friendly and very good at easing you into the training, which was important for a newcomer like me. As it turns out, it's actually a lot of fun. Also, the community that goes here is very nice and welcoming - everyone encourages each other and learns together. It makes the training process more than just exercise and changes it from a chore into something that I really look forward to. I have never felt so good and I honestly can't say enough good about this place. It's clean, fun, friendly, and just a really nice group of people. Can't say enough good stuff about this place! I trained over 20 years ago at different martial arts school and value my past experience. But BBJJ is truly exceptional. First, the instructors at BBJJ are fantastic. They're long-time practitioners devoted to the art and providing excellent education to their students. The classes are very well organized and although they're group form, feel highly personalized. They truly go above and beyond to help you reach your goals. And If you have an injury or challenge, they offer great support and information on how to work around them. They're also diligent about training safely and maintaining a positive fun environment. Sure, you're learning a contact art-form and the classes are highly challenging. But they're not unnecessarily brutal. Students farther along in their training are extremely helpful (not harmful) to newer students. This non-competitive / supportive environment is what makes truly BBJJ unique. Other schools can be competition focused and even charge students to partake in required 'in school" competitions. BBJJ doesn't do this -- the focus is on challenging your self and encouraging fellow classmates on their journey. To keep it fun and interesting, BBJJ also offers fantastic specialty seminars school-wide. Some are hosted by head instructors and others guest educators (which has included Olympic athletes, proffestional fighters and fitness educators.) Some free seminars are even open to friends and family. On that note, I don't have kids. But I train along side parents who also have theirs enrolled in the children's program. Entire families are training here -- and they're thrilled too. That really speaks volumes about the school. I feel so blessed to rediscover martial arts again at such a wonderful place! read more

I originally came to take part in one of their free women's self defense classes the hold every once and a while. Though I've done karate in the past, I never felt comfortable again with another dojo so I'd laid off for a bit, especially with jiu jitsu which can often put women in a vulnerable position. The staff was so supportive and understanding as well as completely noncompetitive and did not take much to convince me this was the dojo for me. HIGHLY recommended!! read more

Love this place - our boys went here for 2 years (they are now 6) until we moved out of the area. The staff is super friendly and they genuinely care about your family and your kids progress. The classes are fantastic - great fun, a super workout, good discipline. Our boys also learned life skills - such as how to deal with strangers for example.
