Additionally there's a sandwich counter where you can build your own or order one from their menu. All the sandwiches are made to order on their house-made bread and the prices are super low. If I lived near this place that sandwich counter would quickly become a go-to lunch spot. The people were friendly and the place is clean. Plum, cherry, and blueberry coffee cake as well as bienenstich (beesting cake). My mother, who grew up in the German ward of St. Louis and is from a German family, was overjoyed, as she was taken right back to her childhood. Perfectly crumbly, buttery crumb cakes with fresh fruits -- they were all delicious, but the plum was the best. I had a slice of bienenstich, which is a cake filled with vanilla custard/cream and topped with caramelized almonds. The cream was so mild and airy and paired perfectly with the crunchy, sweet almond topping. The owner and baker -- who I can only presume is Christine -- was there and she spoke to us about her life in Germany and how she has been running her bakery here for 20 years (she started at around age 40, by the way!) She had a talent for being available when we needed her and hanging back when we wanted "us" time. She was a joy and we loved talking with her. I just purchased some glazed donuts and some donut holes. These things are addictive so don't buy more than what your stomach can handle. The donut holes just melted in your mouth on contact. Absolutely delicious.
