After many years at YRYH, we made the decision to pick up anchor and move elsewhere. What used to…read morebe a marina with a restaurant has become a restaurant with a marina attached. Marina management has made it clear to slipholders who has sway here. The last straw for us is no more DIY in the boatyard. From what I hear, 35 other boats at YRYH left as well. If you are a transient coming for a weekend, you will be fine. But if you are looking for a longer term set up, you may want to consider sailing to another destination.

The boatyard is no longer operated by YRYH, it is operated by boaters world and I would steer clear of them as they have built themselves a very poor reputation since taking it over. It's true that the restaurant, YROC, has become a big driver of traffic in the marina and they can be a pain for slip holders but that has been a little better this year as well, if they expand again I'm sure I'll need to change this as it will truly be a restaurant with a marina on property but so far so good. The docks are nice floating docks with plenty of room and well maintained.

It's a strange thing to try to put a Yelp rating to, because this is a small park. When they say…read moreonly eight parking spots and nowhere else in the area to park or access the trails, they mean it. And when you hit the beach, you'll struggle to walk far in either direction amongst the driftwood. It was maybe a little over an hour visit for me, and maybe you could push it a little more if you did all the side trails. But I guess the thing for me is that I don't really have any desire to see them do anything different with the space. While much of the shoreline is developed or inaccessible, this area offers a fascinating variety of landscapes. The flora shift dramatically and suddenly, and you don't need signage to tell you where one zone ends and another begins. The diversion off of the main highway is not a huge one, and it is an interesting and worthwhile site.

Look for the kiosk sign, it's a small dirt parking lot. It's easy to miss if you don't pay attention. The lot is said to house 8 cars. Trails are not paved and consist of a mixture of dirt, root laden and sand terrain. There is a small boardwalk to cross on one of the trails that leads to beach access that veers to the right. The trail that leads to the right is roughly Half a mile to slightly a 3/4 mile to the beach. I recommend wearing shoes and not flip flops. I did have shoes on. The starting trails have plenty of shade. We only took one of the three trails due to limited time and it was dark by the time we made it back. They do close the gate by sunset. I happened to be too busy looking at my phone on the way back and actually walked right into the gate. If you do go to catch the sunset, make sure you give yourself at least 10-15 minutes to get back or else you will be stuck using your cellphone flashlight to find your way back or maybe bring a headlight just in case. Also, I didn't have cellphone service, so make sure if you visit in the evening, that you let people know of your whereabouts, prior to heading out in case of an emergency. On the website they say there are no bathrooms, but I happened to see a port a potty on one part of the trail. It looks like a nice place to take walks and explore. I would like to go back and check out the other trails.

My wife and I have been sailing a few years on lakes in 25 footers and wanted to get out on some…read morebigger waters and on bigger boats. We also wanted formal training and certifications and we found this place online. We also thought seeing Virginia and the east coast a bit would have been a great time for my wife Brittany's birthday. So we flew to Virginia's SailTime courses instead of one of the the ones in our own state. We flew from California and I spoke with Connie and she was kind enough to let us stay on a 41 ft yacht (Adiona, a 41 ft Jenneua) for our stay in Virginia which saved us about half a grand on hotels. When we landed a lady named Brooke made sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. When we got on board to unpack there was even a note waiting for us that said happy birthday. Brooke was a sweetheart for sure and we felt like family by the time we had set our bags down. She made sure of it. We met our captain the next morning. A man named Jim Lant who took us through our 101, 103 and 104 courses over the next 6 days. We had a GREAT time and I honestly didn't want to leave when we finished up our last tests. Those six days we sailed every day and every place we sailed too seemed to have friendly people there who all knew each other and our captain Jim. The first ocean sail my wife and I ever did together was from Norfolk to cape Charles and that's pretty cool. Well miss the people and sailing for sure! Everyone who loves sailing should come here and meet Connie, Jim and Brooke. You won't regret it and we won't ever forget it. Jim is the BEST captain.

Captain Jim was absolutely amazing. He was so patient and did such a fantastic job of teaching us about sailing and he allowed all of us to take part in one way or another. He was so good at including everyone and making sure each person received direct guidance from him. It's generally really hard to find activities that all 6 of us enjoy due to the age range but this turned out to be an absolutely perfect day. I would highly recommend Sailtime if you are thinking of trying this adventure! Working with them on scheduling was so easy and smooth as well. Be warned, you will want a sail boat afterward.....

The fort is hidden between small forests and the large gun barrel is underneath the underpass of the fort with the projectiles nearby. There's trails around, one that walk to the visitor center and the other one going to the pollinators garden and go around the fort overlook the bay. Restroom was large and clean, there is a small information center with loads of brochures and two friendly ladies inside greeting people and happy to answer questions, and there was even a small gift shop with a penny press! WIN! This is a place I wish I had stopped sooner - and if you are a newbie to the Eastern shore - be sure to stop in so you can get your bearings and get some tips from locals who run the place!

Change your website hours to match what your current hours of operation are!! When I asked the guy at the window why are hours different from what is on the website he says yeah we need to change that. Sheesh! Their hours of operation are 9am-11pm every day after Labor Day. This great fall fishing season is what they call the off season. Talk about being out of touch with their consumers! We had to get a room to try tomorrow but while I'm in this room I will be exploring other places to fish whose website is accurate about their business!!
