The amenities were great such as the communal kitchen and on Tuesdays and Sundays they offer free dinner with a purchase of any drink at their bar which was lively every night. I ordered a Fanta and got a plate of pesto pasta, which was glorious because I had just came into the city and was super tired and didn't feel like searching the area for food. . I stayed in a 12 bed female dorm. There were trunks underneath the bed for storage that you could put a combination or padlock on, and the bed itself had a nightlight, USB charging ports and little net storage pocket for essentials. Like most hostels in Europe, most of them double up as hotels so for a premium price you can also have your own room. . It is centrally located with plenty of bars, restaurants, gift shops, and tobacco stores nearby. The closest Metro station is less than a 10 minute walk (either Sol or Gran Via). . For two nights, we paid €40 so definitely ideal if you are on a budget. They take a €10 deposit for each room key, which is returned to you within 24 hours of checking out ON TIME. If you check out late, they keep the deposit for your room key. The bathrooms were mostly clean, but a few of the sinks didn't have hot water and in the dead of winter that could be really detrimental on the hands. The best time to catch the bathrooms is early morning. I would say before 8 AM when they've just been cleaned. One con about this place is they charge €6 to rent towels and they sell basic essentials, such as soap, shampoo, etc. Every other hostel I stayed in Europe offers towels and toiletries free of charge. . Nonetheless, CATS was cool. They served their purpose and if you wanna be in the heart of the city without city prices, it's a great place to stay.

Although my stay at this hostel was comfortable, and it was at a great location, social life there was less than mediocre. One great advantage this place has is the free breakfast they provide every morning. It's a simple breakfast, that consisted of cereal, milk, toast, pastries, maybe some small snacks and orange juice. Another advantage is that this hostel is fairly clean. They provide bedsheets, and a pillow but I brought my own towel and sleeping bag. Rooms are fairly spacious. All the rooms hold up to 6 people and all the rooms are mixed-sex, but if you are a girl, I think you can request your room to be single-sex. Beds are fairly comfortable. Bathrooms are also fairly clean as well and they do not have any strange smell. The staff is fairly friendly, and they are somewhat helpful, especially in giving direction to the tourist spots in Madrid. They provide free wi-fi, but sometimes it did not work really well during my stay. I also used the computers but sometimes the internet was really slow or stopped working. They have a room where you can play a billiards game. One major disadvantage this place has is that it lacks social atmosphere, so if you are traveling solo, it may be really hard to meet someone. At that time, there was a tour group from France which occupied a significant part of the hostel. I did meet some people. I shared a room with two pretty ladies on holiday from Perth, Western Australia, and I actually went out with them on an evening stroll in the streets of Madrid, and talked a little about American and Australian culture. I also shared the room with a few traveling students from UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) and I shared my experiences in London and Andalucia, while they shared their experiences in Amsterdam and Barcelona. The staff does give some effort to make this hostel social by trying to arrange a daily evening event. The hostel is at a great location. It's a few minutes walk to the Tribunal station of the Madrid Metro, and a couple stops away from the Sol station. The Atocha Renfe station is about 10 minutes away by Metro. Overall, I think this a great choice for a clean hostel if you are traveling in a group of 6 or less, but the hostel is less than mediocre choice if you are traveling solo and a social life is really important to you.

Be aware the rooms are tiny, but they're really tidy and clean. Plus, for he price and quality, you just can't beat the location! They're perfectly located if you're eager to see the city and explore downtown. It's a 2 minute walk to the Puerta del Sol and a 2 minute minute walk to the Plaza Mayor. You are literally in the middle of everything. It's amazing. Our room was on the street side and was a little noisy at night sometimes, but they have sound/lightproof shutters to close over the balcony door. They have a single parking spot directly in front of the hostal that is reserved just for their customers. It is only for loading and unloading luggage and so cannot be used for long-term parking, but it's very convenient, so keep it in mind if you're renting a car. There are a couple of underground parking garages not too far away where we've always parked our rental car. The hotel does validate your parking ticket when you check-out. I really have had a great experience staying here and would recommend it to anyone who has never been to Madrid or is looking to maximize their exploration.

The only helpful person in Barajas was the information desk guy: he told us he knew of a cheap hostel, located close to the airport, and with free pick up and drop off (although you better be strong enough to haul your luggage inside the van, because the driver can't), all for around 50-60 euros/night (it actually cost about 70-75 euros/person.) The building is essentially a big, 3-level mansion in a nice and quiet neighborhood. There is a tiny "mall" (see my other reviews) with a few places to eat, and a market. The hostel is new and very modern -- ask how to open the door and turn on the amenities with your key card before you run off into your room. The bathroom is modern, the beds are comfortable and clean (although for a double, the beds were so close to each other, you'd think it was a full bed), and the staff was nice. The room was simple but modern, however, the walls could have used some paint. The halls were very dark, and noisy. Everything was going fine until the construction noises started going off; our flight left at 6:45 am, and we told the staff that this meant that we'd have to go to bed at around 7ish. I understand that if a room needs a new toilet asap, it's going to get the new toilet...but why did the construction start at like 4 pm? They had all day to finish it, and not bother the patrons at night time with the noises. This went on til 9 pm. I'm talking LOUD banging, drilling, etc. Best part? The noises stopped, and suddenly, I hear water splashing really close to me...turns out, the construction was right above our room, and they created a leak that ran directly down into our bathroom, from the ceiling...water on top of the toilet, towels, sink... EXTREMELY annoyed by now, I call the front desk to tell them the bathroom is wet with a leak. The guy says he will come up to clean it up. 10 minutes later, still no guy. He calls me from the front desk to ask me if he can come up to clean it up....huh? Obviously? Did he not just say he would...?? He comes up, knocks, and asks, yet again, if he can come in to clean it. I snap and say obviously, and tell him that the noises are ridiculous for how late it is in the day. He says there haven't been any noises in the past 2-3 hours, and I tell him that he's wrong...the noises stopped maybe 20 minutes before he came up. He mops it up (sink and toilet are still wet, though), apologizes and leaves. After that, we had very loud next door neighbors...but somehow we managed to sleep a few hours before our alarm went off at 3 am. With that said, this place is more like a bed and breakfast, since it is far from a metro station and Madrid city. I'd recommend it if you have an early flight, as the hostel van leaves every hour, all day/night.

After a 15…read morehour day standing in customer service lines at the Barcelona airport we finally got to Madrid and were recommended by the airline staff to stay here. Los Coronales is a hostel, so obviously it is not fancy, but it was comfortable and pleasant with a kind and helpful staff. The neighborhood is quiet and lovely. The manager recommended a fantastic restaurant a few blocks away. The meal was actually the best we had on our entire trip. It's true the location is not close to the center of town, but a short Uber ride gets you close to the Parque del Buen Retiro where there are museums and restaurants in walking distance. The shuttle service to the airport was a great expense saver. The drivers were helpful with luggage and friendly. The Hostel also has a continental style breakfast for 5 Euro, and the espresso machine is outstanding. It was such a relief to stay here after such a horrible experience with Vueling airline. This is a fantastic hostel right smack dab in the middle of all the action…read more I chose Sungate One because I had a positive experience at their sister hotel, Hostel One Ramblas in Barcelona prior to coming here. Now this is hostel livin' folks. It's not the most glamorous nor do you get the most privacy but what makes this place stand out are the staff. They insist on helping you carry your luggage in and out of the building which can be quite daunting considering the amount of stairs you have to climb. The shared bedrooms are basic. Twin beds laid amongst the floor plan. I had the best experience meeting people over the community dinners which the staff lovingly prepares. My most memorable experience perhaps was interacting with the staff, most of which are volunteers, especially the lead manager Angel. Long story short, I was having sort of a crummy time in Spain because I hadn't experienced the small town Spanish city that I had envisioned. He spent countless hours researching flights and train options with me to see where my next destination would be. I was a mess but he was my calm when all I wanted to do was storm. You can imagine that I'm not a super skilled traveler and not saavy when it comes to foreign public transportation so I relied on his knowledge to lead me to my next voyage. I'm so eternally grateful for his poised efforts and patience to help me in my quest and my ticket to that part of Spain I had so heavily longed for. Thanks to Angel, I took a risk and booked a train ticket to Leon which was in the North of Spain and it was the BEST time of my life and probably the highlight of my trip. I can't thank Angel and staff enough for being so incredibly helpful and bending over backwards for their guests. YOU GUYS ROCK and are what made Madrid most memorable for me.

Stayed for three nights here recently. The staff are what…read moremakes this place tick. They are some of the friendliest people I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. Betty, Alex, Alejandro, Christian, Sara and Nicole go above and beyond in every measure. Betty greeted me upon my arrival and brought me some desperately needed water. She handed me a map and quickly highlighted all the important things to see in the city. I could tell she was passionate about Madrid and the hostel itself. I then got a quick tour of the facilities and was shown to my room. My first room was on the same floor as the reception and had six beds. Mine was in the corner with a small bedside table next to it and a full size locker beside as well. A few coat hangers are also close by. The bed was reasonably comfortable but I could feel the springs through the mattress. I told a staff member about this in the second night and my mattress was flipped over. I had a mishmash of roommates with every bed occupied. This made it noisy especially in the early hours of the morning when they started packing up and leaving one by one. I could also hear the chatter from the reception desk in the early hours. Sungate has a nice kitchen fully stocked with pots and pans, a fridge and oven, kettle and several different kind of tea and coffee. There's even Yerba Mate for those brave enough to try it!! Their showerheads lack pressure but have good temperature. There's also a nice collection of leftover soap, shampoo etc in case you forget to bring anything. I never had a problem finding an open shower to use and there are four on one level and a few more upstairs as well. Free churros with chocolate dip and sponge bread are offered in the morning. In the evening at 9 they have a free dinner, different every night. One night we had pesto pasta, another night tuna with veggies. There's a tip jar to help pay for the ingredients. Every night I attended there was also a musician there for our entertainment!! The quality of the other guests was also outstanding. I met some incredible people from all over the world and am hoping to stay in touch with a good number of them, staff included. As I previously mentioned, the staff go out of their way to accommodate your every request. Want directions to the nearby cheap supermarket? That's easy. Want to know the options to get to Barcelona and how much they cost? They'll look that up for you. Concierge, trip planner, friend - they are all of these things and so much more. Last but not least they have a decent lounge area upstairs. Two computers are available for guest use, though one had a broken space bar for the duration of my stay. The WiFi signal was intermittent, which was quite annoying. This was true for my smartphone and their computers. There's also a few beanbags and a sitting/reading area. Prices are quite good for what your get. 16-18 euros for a six or five person bedroom and more for private or smaller room. Considering this includes two full meals every day, it's a steal.

The bottom bunks were all taken so we had to make do with top bunks, which makes it hard to get ready for bed and for checking out, especially if bunk mates are still sleeping. I'm not used to staying in hostels, honestly, so I'm always extra careful to tiptoe around. My sister didn't give a poop, as she said that, it's a hostel and our fellow travelers should expect others making a ruckus. What really rubbed me the wrong way were a few things: first, we weren't alerted to a 10 euro per person deposit for the key/bedsheets/and I forgot whatever else. That was a lot of Euro we could have spent that was instead held hostage. Also, I booked through trip advisor and the front desk kept insisting I provide a voucher. We had this back and forth for awhile, and I even showed her my online bank statement proving that I paid my reservation in full, but she kept insisting I owed a balance. It wasn't resolved by the time we got our bedsheets; they just kept a copy of my confirmation email. My sister booked directly with the hostel and they didn't even give her a confirmation email. She had to email them again to verify her reservation. Our floor smelled like fruit snacks. In the bathroom, it smelled like fruit snacks trying to cover up a musty foul smell. Other than that, super clean and modern rooms, sitting rooms, and facilities--even the shower. Unfortunately some princess had explosive diarrhea and left the poor cleaning people to deal with it. Personally, if I had diarrhea that covered all of the back of the toilet, I would at least make some attempt to wash it down as best as I could. That's sober me speaking, though. Still. No excuses. That was hella rude to poo all over the toilet like that.

The friendly staff all speak english, there is an immaculate kitchen where you can cook your own food and freeze water in the big fridge freezers or keep your cherries nice and cold for the next day. The showers are big, there are three internet computers you can pay for or wifi for your laptop. There are lockers in the rooms but you have to provide your own padlock or hire one from reception. There is also a deposit for your bedclothes, (EUR5) but towels are not provided. There is a small communal area beyond reception where you eat food, if you don't want to eat in the kitchen, and watch tv if you're getting too hot outside. The main street outside, the Arenal, is a pedestrianised shopping street, one of the nicer ones in Madrid, and there are lots of nice shops on your way to one of the major attractions. The Hostel is very close to the Opera and the Palacio Real, and the Oriental Gardens in front of the palace is a nice place to spend the evening. The things I didn't like about the hostel was that it was very, very noisy (the street noise outside didn't stop til 9am) very warm (no air conditioning) and mixed. Certain men may think wow but frankly it's embarrassing trying to get changed and fall asleep in a roomful of strange women (two americans and two australians on my first night). Nevertheless, for only EUR21 for a six bunk room, which includes an all you can eat breakfast, this is exceptionally good value, and you are right in the heart of things. Just don't expect to sleep much!

My husband and I recently took a honeymoon to Spain, and this was our home base for our three…read morenights in Madrid. The location is extremely convenient, about a block or so from Gran Via and a 10 to 15 walk from most anywhere you want to go. And if you can't walk there, there are metro stops a block or two away. The little alley way where the hotel actually sits is slightly sketchy, with at least a few prostitutes hanging around whenever you walk by. This wasn't a problem for us, but it might be for you. But I definitely wouldn't call it anywhere near a bad neighborhood. There are even a couple of very cool bars within stumbling distance. We showed up at about 1030am right after a long flight from the United States. We hoped they'd have a room available for us that early and they absolutely did. The room was very clean and nicely decorated. All the rooms in the hotel have private bathrooms, which was a requirement for us. The bed was probably the least comfortable of our trip (too firm even for us) but we were so exhausted by the time we stumbled into our hotel room each night that it didn't really matter. The staff at the front desk was always very nice and helpful. They speak some English if that matters to you. The price ended up working out to about $55 a night, which you really can't beat. If you're looking for a cozy spot in a convenient location, I'd definitely recommend this hotel.
