France has Cassoulet. Brazil double dog dares with Fejoada (fay-zzzhwa-dah)…read more I asked the hotel receptionist where to go for Fejoada. She pointed me to Bolinha. It is the weekend and the ubiquitous Brazilian dish is their signature buffet. So everything came to the table! The 10 cuts of meat include bacon, pork chop, oxtail, pig ear, beef tongue, linguica, brisket, ham hock, and pork knuckles. The broth is brimming with collagen--so they offer salsa, hot sauce, and fresh orange slices to resuscitate your palette. Thicken the broth with toasted nut flour if you wish. There's fried sweet banana and yucca, pork rinds and crispy bacon on the side, perfect rice and shredded collard greens. Assuage your guilt with shots of house caipirinha. Think a sweeter margarita on the rocks... The very patient and sweet maitre'd offered me dessert. He's thinks he is so funny! While I have no reference to compare this example to others as it was my first taste of Fejoada, the standard is set immensely high. Not cheap at R150 total bill ($40). But this memory has been seared indelibly into my food coma'd brain. And now I understand why they have such a light dinner. Time for a siesta to recover. !!! Bring a translator (Google translate is pretty good) if you don't speak Portuguese. Inhouse WiFi available.

Our first taste of local Brazilian food after arriving in São Paulo! We asked the concierge for…read moresuggestions of where to eat, but his English wasn't very good and he just said that there are a lot of good restaurants in a general direction that he pointed to. So we started out from our hotel to see what we would find and stumbled on this cafe-like restaurant. We started poring over the menu but it really was too difficult to make out the food names in Portuguese. We finally asked if there was an English menu and they had a few! That made things so much easier! Our server, who didn't speak English, was really friendly and tried to be helpful. The food was delicious. The beef and pork skewers was probably the most delicious of the dishes our group ordered. I tried to order an acai bowl but when ordering it pointed to the one with papaya in it, so the server thought I only wanted it with papaya. When it arrived, I'm not sure what it was but it was really good. It was like a frozen custard made with fresh papaya and topped with raspberry liquor. So refreshing and yummy - perfect for the warm humid weather. I tried a sip of my friend's Nortena local beer and it was really smooth and light (tasted like water to my friend) but as someone who doesn't usually drink/like beer, I liked it. The server earned this restaurant the 5th star with how hard he tried to help us find the dishes we wanted to order. And when we discovered one of our dishes was given to the wrong person, he had the dish remade although we said it was ok. He was very accommodating and patient with our group of 8. Hope you get the same guy if you go!

I used Uber to get here - the restaurant is in a quaint neighborhood. When I walked in, I literally felt like I was walking into someone's house. Upon entry, I was greeted by the friendly staff. The man who greeted me spoke English, which put me at ease. I told him that I have no clue what to order and I would try whatever he recommended - that locals would love. He pointed me to some menu options and also suggested that I half the size of my order since the food is intended for sharing. Well, even with that tip -- the portions were HUGE! The food was excellent, but plan on leaving with food to go. I posted some pictures of my meal if you'd like to see the portions. I highly recommend getting out and trying this place!

Let me just say as a disclaimer that while I was in São Paulo, I was basically just following the herd because I don't know Portuguese and I did not know anything about Brazilian food and culture prior to my trip. While dining here, my friend's mom, aunty, uncle, and cousin did all the ordering so I unfortunately don't know what most of the dishes were called in Portuguese. We got to the restaurant around 7:30pm on a Thursday. Parking is either street or valet in front of the restaurant, so plan ahead and come early if you want to find a spot on the street. Although we had a reservation for a party of 6 the restaurant was not too crowded and felt spacious. We were promptly greeted and were able to order drinks. Like everywhere else I went in Sao Paulo, getting plain old tap water is NOT an option...if you ask for water you'll get a bottle of water and a glass! My friend's grandpa ordered a caipirinha...which I had never seen or tried before. Since he only wanted a little bit, he gave me the rest of his, and after that I was hooked! I love how much lime they use (it seemed like 1/2 a lime was in that tiny glass) and how smooth the drink was! Shortly after we received our drinks, the food started coming. Although I couldn't understand anything on the menu, it was quite long with many different selections available. I hadn't realized that they ordered so many dishes, but I was excited to try a bit of everything! For appetizers, we started off with these breaded/fried poppers-type bites that were either filled with meat or cheese. The poppers were made out of a Brazilian ingredient (I think its from a vegetable root) and were perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside! I tried one of each and had to restrain myself from eating more so that I could save room to try more of the main dishes. Then, one by one, the dinner dishes started coming. We ordered so many different things, it felt like constant serving for 10 minutes! Of course, we started off with rice (Brazilian rice, which has a hint of garlic, is long grain, and not sticky), white beans, and veggies (chopped kale and a mash made out of the same root the poppers were made of). First came okra and chicken in a somewhat stew-ish form. This was great...the okra was soft and the chicken tender! Next came deep fried ham hocks with fried plantain and a white bean/bread crumb mixture. I'm used to ham hocks in soups, but this was my first time eating it deep fried. And it was so good, definitely one of my favorites! The meat was not tough; even though it was deep fried, it had the texture of pulled pork on the inside. After these came Brazilian steak frites and deep fried pork rinds with a fried egg and more bean/breadcrumb mixture. The steak was good, and this was my first time trying Brazilian beef! The pork rinds were tasty, but very hard and crunchy which made it a little difficult to eat. Now the servings for each of these dishes was quite large, and even though we did this meal family style with six people, we ended up very full and with a ton of leftovers! There was a dessert menu available, but I was unfortunately too full to try anything. Obrigada, Tempero das Gerais, for giving me my first taste of Brazilian cuisine! TL;DR - large menu selection, large portions, and deep fried ham hocks!
