Portobello Road has the most incredible collection of books, figurines, retro toys, decor (mostly to the effect of worn wood signs, masse print art, ship flotsam, and island kitsch), stationery, lamps, marionettes, and maps that you will find - and likely not purchase - in Edgartown. It is a quintessential walkthrough, guaranteed to charm and bemuse without ever truly driving you crack open your wallet. Every year we go to this store when we are visiting the vineyard. Every year we have supported and enjoyed this store. The most recent visit, we noticed a painting that had been done by a fellow Pittsburgh native and it drew our attention not only because of how well it was done but because it was a fellow Pittsburgher. My husband asked how much it was and after being told the price he smiled and chuckled that it was too expensive for him. The owner or someone who worked there proceeded to berate him for his response, using profanities in front of my 3 yr old child. He continued to scold and criticize him even after he walked out the back door. I cut in and asked him to please stop for the sake of my child who was standing right there, which he refused to do and continued on without even listening to what either one of us had to say. If he had listened, he would have heard that we were in fact interested in the painting because it was done by a fellow Pittsburgh native, that I am in fact an artist myself and we know many fellow Pittsburgh artists. We would never insult the painter and just because we responded that the painting was too much for us, that doesn't mean we have any disdain for the artist himself. It was a horrible way to treat any customer much less any fellow human being. For a store that has banners that in fact say "be kind" all over it, I should hope you would heed your own advice in the future. It's one thing if you felt insulted but to not even listen to what we had to say or talk it through with us was absolutely disgusting. I don't know if this person was having a bad day or what but I don't think anyone should ever be treated like that.. read more

Portobello Road isn't a very big store, but the proprietor seems to have filled it up with stuff scientifically designed to part me from my money. There are a few books, maybe 50-100 titles, of which I either had read or wanted to read about 80%. There were New Yorker cartoon notecards and refrigerator magnets. There were vintage signs and framed photos, beautiful home accessories, and irresistible notebooks and other stationery products and gifts. It required incredible strength of will to get out of there for less than $100. You have been warned. read more

A fantastic store! I spent two hours here but probably would've spent more time if I had it; honestly, I could probably live here. Wanted to buy everything. The store is small but is stuffed to the gills with unique gifts and tons of books that I would have loved to buy/read. Had to tear myself away to go to dinner, but not before buying something and writing a great comment in their visitor's comment book. read more

This place is an absolute treasure, one of the best shopping experiences you will ever have. If you don't walk out with 5 items for yourself or for gifts, you didn't stay long enough. The young managers from Pennsylvania and Romania are expert merchandisers and will show you around. Save yourself some time on later birthday and Christmas shopping and do it at this store in 20 minutes. read more
