    Porter Sculpture Park, Montrose SD

There is some amazing stuff along the interstate and this is one of them. A 60 foot bull head? Yes, please. Unfortunately, the park is only open seasonally because it gets crazy cold in South Dakota during the winter. Check their webpage before making the journey. I came across this place driving across South Dakota along the I-90. Its cool, there are a ton of statues very well done and painted nicely. There is a $10 charge for adults and $5 for kids I believe. At first I didn't think it was worth and said I only had cash but he takes card too. It was worth the $. Not only is it a cool sculpture garden this guy set up himself but there are very clean port-o-potties on site. So he looks like he put some good effort into this spot. Support small support local!

Absolutely worth a visit! We passed by on 90 traveling west and we were both like ahhhh what the heck is that - a giant bull head? Yes, yes it is. On our return trip, we decided to stop in and see what it was all about. Wayne is a real character - and truly impressive. His sculptures are stunning, creative, and some delightfully creepy. I'll only post a few pics to give flavor, but you need to see these in person to truly appreciate. Dog and kid friendly! It was the perfect place to stretch our legs and enjoy some creative masterpieces

This is a treasure too many pass by while traveling on I-90 when you see the Bulls Head sculpture take the Montrose exit and walk the sculpture park you will not be disappointed the art is coupled with poetry. We stop every time we come back to SD if we are traveling while the sculpture park is open between May and Oct. Wayne Porter the artist always greets visitors with his dog Bambino and a modest donation is requested it is well worth much more than asked. This is a rare find when traveling. I cannot say enough about Porter Sculpture Park.

Super cool, strange, mind twisting art! A must see! And wish I could add another star as he is a Harvest Host member! Thanks for letting us stay!

An incredible, unexpected stop! Absolutely loved. The artist is super friendly and welcoming.

From the stunning steer head that dominates the South Dakota landscape to metal buzzards that appear to have flapped out of a surreal 1930s cartoon, Wayne Porter's sculpture park is a unique experience. Even if most museums and galleries bore you, give this one a chance. Wayne is a delightful host (ask him for chocolate) and his dog Bambino will escort you through the sculptures. Don't be intimidated by the long dirt driveway. It's worth it! Also, go inside the steer's head...it is quite an experience.

This was great. I have driven past it a lot of my life and finally stopped. It is on the TIME magazine top 50 roadside places to stop. $8 for adults. If you like cool are this is the place for a quick stop on a roadside trip.

Worth the money & the stop. Phenomenal sculptures and the artist is on-site and super friendly. Lots of parking and easily maneuverable for even large RVs. Very highly recommend visiting Porter Sculpture Park.

We camped for 2 nights on the east side in space 54 with only a few others nearby a few sites away. It's just what we needed to decompress after the College World Series in Omaha. Beautiful scenery and views! We had planned on renting kayaks and getting out on the lake, but with 26 mph winds, intermittent rain and clouds, it just wasn't happening. There is nobody at either entrance for camping or state park permits so it's a self pay kiosk. It looks like you can also pay for the firewood and just take it from the side, but not sure. We didn't take any due to the weather. I am wondering though, to rent a kayak is says to do so at the front gate, so there is nobody there and wondering how quickly someone would answer the phone number listed to call. Didn't find a camp store either which we had seen online and doubt it would be open if there was either being a week day and very few people at the park. We did drive 6 miles into the cute town of Canistota where you can still pump gas and then go in and pay afterwards. Nice people in the store. Overall, impressed with the cleanliness of all facilities. The restrooms were spotless and even free from creepy crawly bugs in the showers that we find at other campgrounds. Speaking of bugs, there is a multitude of little flies that bite that we were fighting off. Bug repellent didn't seem to "bug" them at all and they were so abundant we had to head indoors. Our poor pups were scratching and nipping as these things covered their fur. That is however, the only negative thing we could find here. If ever in the area again, we wouldn't hesitate to stay again!

I came this past weekend and the weather was just right, light sunshine with a light breeze. I can't speak for how this park is in the winter, but based on some of the billboards around the park, snow shoeing is a possibility! Lots of nice, paved trails throughout the premise. Unique animals can be seen in the water as well as on land. I didn't see any creatures this time around, but I don't doubt that they're there. Many families were on a scavenger hunts, great idea for an activity! I believe that during the summer, boats are available for rent to ride around the lakes. Lots of poop stations available for your pup's doo doo. Overall, I had a great time at this nature park. Ample parking available in the lots at the various entrances.

Views we're great, paths free of debris & well maintained, lots of people fishing, walking & a few on canoes. This would be the perfect place to go for a walk except the amount of mosquitos is insane... & We Wore TONS of Bug Spray!! It got so bad we decided to go back to the car & walk around town.

Site #26 is also pretty nice, and is a pull thru site with full hook-ups. Showers and restrooms are pretty darn clean for a city run campground. Dog friendly, and there are plenty of trails to walk your furry pal on. No cable, but Mitchell does get 3 local channels via antenna, and it's so pretty here you're not going to watch much tv anyway. WARNING (and why this review is only 4 stars): If you're looking to stay here to enjoy the lake, forget it. The lake is pretty gross and full of blue-green algae, so DON'T plan on swimming. Or leting your kids swim. Or letting your dog anywhere near it. If your only interested in the view, the trees, and a nice quiet place to chill out, it's still worth it, IMHO.

There was a list available to see which sites were reserved, though it was a tad confusing because it wasn't in what we thought was a logical order. But we found a site without any neighbors and got set up rather quickly. If I remember right we paid about $30 for our electric post site. The campground was pretty quiet despite being just off the business loop and on the lake during a holiday weekend. The next morning we had to pack up right away, but not before my daughter enjoyed a hot shower in "the cleanest campground shower ever" (she's 14, so picky) and we got ready for the day in the *very* clean bathroom. This was very much appreciated after two weeks camping on BLM land with only a pit toilet available! We spoke briefly with the owner who told us she's managed it for the city for just a couple years and is still working on upgrades, but I thought the bathrooms were great as is. We were very satisfied, and if we could have stayed longer we would have made use of the lake and playground.
