It began as the Elephant Fayre in 1981. Lord Peregrine Eliot ran the festival until 1986 when there was a great deal of looting and ha closed that festival down. In 2003 he and his wife Lady Catherine began the Port Eliot Lit Fest. This has grown into the festival we know today. I first started going to this wonderful festival featuring arts from many sectors in 2007. I loved this festival. I loved the artists, the tea ladies, the music, the food, and wandering around the estate. Last year, Lord Eliot, or Perry as so many knew him as, died a week before the festival. He wanted the festival to go on. We came this year in hopes of finding the same magic that Perry always made you feel when visiting his castle. Unfortunately, it was not here. I'm not sure if it was because it rained so much. It rained and rained and rained some more. The cars were stuck. They couldn't empty the toilets because it was simply too muddy to get to them without getting stuck. I have no beautiful pictures to share with you like I have from previous festivals. I can only show you the mud. I have a couple of the speakers and one great meal. There was another festival that was canceled because of the rain. My opinion is maybe this one should have been cancelled at the point when they couldn't properly care for the toilets. read more
