We took a Dungeness crabbing tour through the charter service on the Spindrift. The captain and…read moremate were both very friendly and we chatted quite a bit with the mate while we were pulling up crab. The charter was supposed to be 90 minutes, but it turned out to be 150 minutes. We pulled up 13 or 14 pots in 60-100' waters. Three of the guests helped deal with the pots. One had a hook and pulled the bouy into the boat. The second pulled in the line for the pot and the third helped the mate get the pot into the boat. Over the course of the 2 1/2 hours, we caught 114 male legal crabs. When we returned, each guest got eight Dungeness crabs. So for us that meant 16 crabs. You had a choice of having them cook the crab for you or take it home and cook it yourself. We chose the second option. It was a beautiful day, but there were 3 to 5 foot swells. So if you have problems with seasickness, take some medication before you go out. It's worth mentioning that on top of the cost of the charter, each guest must buy a crabbing license from the state of Oregon for $37 out of state.

We had a great experience with Newport Tradewinds. We did the 5-hour bottom-fishing trip with the…read morecrab pot add-on. We were on the Enterprise (which was clean and well kept), and Dave and Aaron were great. There were 10 people on our boat, and almost everyone caught their limits. Mostly rockfish, but also some ling cod. Three times someone caught two fish at once (one on each hook). Our captain (Dave) moved us around a fair amount to put us over fish. Each crab pot pulled in 12 large and delicious Dungeness crabs (after females and too small ones were returned to the water). When you return with your catch, you can get your fish filleted for $1 a piece, and Mark will cook the crabs (perfectly) for $1.25 each. They'll remove the shell and guts if you want, but you can also take the crabs whole. You can get your fillets and crabs to go in a bag, or they can vacuum pack portions for you for an additional fee (I don't know the breakdown, but it was $29 to vacuum pack 12 filets and 20 crabs). Barry let us know that frozen and vacuumed crabs will stay fresh for up to a year. Everyone was really friendly and helpful. We would happily fish with them again.

They will tell you where to go. The boats are your standard 14'.5' aluminum boat with a 9 HP outboard on it. The motor ran great, it was also new for the season. You need to leave your card as a deposit. I'm not crazy about doing that, but not a big deal. They guy working there was very nice and helpful. The store is pretty small, but has plenty of snacks and drinks as well as fishing supplies and bait, live and refrigerated. I'm not leaving a five star for one reason, they require you to clean the boat when you get back. I was beat from pulling pots and really not in the mood to wash down a boat. They have a hose, so you basically wash everything down to the back and then use a pail to remove the water. The positive is they had the hose right there on the dock next to the boat. I brought my own pots so it was nice to wash them down there instead of later. Big plus for me.
