Its a bit down the lane so hard to see from the road. If one didn't know it was there then it would be be missed. I think Mrs Syrett runs the shop with her husband. What Montezuma offers, uniquely, is some very out-there flavours: lots of lime and chili and that kind of thing. Not my cup of tea, but if you like your chocolate with a bit of added zing, this is the place to go. Where a lot of of chocolate shops in Brighton go for the over-the-top, chocolate heaven approach, Montezuma's looks far more professional than most of it's counterparts, with plenty of nicely wrapped packages of chocolate. It isn't actually very enticing to look at: certainly nothing on Choccywoccydoodah's incredible cake display over the road. It's all very nice, just a bit muted in comparison to some of the more out-there places around town. Still, if you like your chocolate flavoured and a bit more... South American, Montezuma's may be for you!

This is the hub of chocolate production - their wonderful and amazing workshop…read more Went for the first of the Bean to Bar days on the 9th October, 2010. It was great being talked through the process by Gerrard Coleman, and sources of the cocoa beans. Took part in the different processes from sorting and roasting the beans to conching. On this day we made a bar out of Jamaican beans, which is now in the stores for a limited time only. (with our names also on the packaging!) I would highly recommend if you get a chance to go to one of their chocolate workshop days - you will definitely have as much fun as I did, and meet other like-minded chocoholics!!! :-)

When I walk in I have to resist the urge to start chewing at the walls just to see whether this shop is actually made of chocolate. So, it is a relatively small premise, but simply filled to the brim. Mainly this shop sells individual chocolates; cream filled, praline, nougat, dusted, dark and many more. They also sell a section of Thortons chocolates as well. Because I came in near Christmas there was plenty of Christmas gifts, such as chocolate Santa's and snowmen. I'm sure Easter is just as well represented. This is also a prefect place to pick up gifts. There are walls of chocolate gift boxes, ranging in size from a few chocs to around a hundred. Brighton was buzzing and hot - a great city to spend a few days around. All those serving us were simply delightful and courteous. We bought our usual booze and nut based (macadamia and cashew) choccy and on this occasion we also tried a box of marzipan chocolates that were divine. We had the best ice cream sundaes, mine was passion fruit based and my wife went for the caramel based one. Both were delicious. The only down side was no customer toilet. As I see it when you serve drinks you provide rest rooms. These are premier league chocolates, hot drinks, alcohols like gin and cream based drinks, fab ice creams and they have branched into body lotions and cosmetics. Hotel C makes me think how shameful it is that Britain once had great chocolate makers and has lost them all to conglomerate greed. I'm conscious I no longer know enough about Thornton's as they have disappeared from view. I still remember one British chocolate maker that had as common in a chocolate box, green chartreuse filled chocolates and chunky stem ginger chocolates when today they sell stuff that they label chocolate when it barely is (a bit like cheap sausage makers saying their nasty products contain 'meat') instead they make stuff full of cheap sugar, cheap vegetable oil (they sell off cocoa butter to the cosmetics industry for more money and find cheaper muck to add to their manufacturing processes). In fact I watched a documentary on one of the big mega conglomerates about making chocolate bars and one of the staff actually discussed their efforts to make their products as cheaply as they could and how they worked hard at finding ways to make bars with as much of 'other' ingredients to cut back on chocolate. They sure a fooling a lot of people a lot of the time. For me it's Hotel Chocolat all the way.

Their packaging is slick and simple and their shops are packed with gift boxes, hampers and slabs of chocolate aimed at obvious markets like For Him, For Her, For Them. I'm not a fan of their milk or white chocolate - I much prefer Monteuzumas and Valhorona - but I do like their dark chocolate and particularly, their Single Estate bars from Venezuela, St. Lucia, Madagascar and Sao Tome.
